South Landing

South Landing is a sheltered chalk-headland cove on the south side of Flamborough Head, combining a small beach with rougher ground around its margins. It can produce varied fishing, but it is a relatively intimate venue where tide, swell and other visitors strongly influence where—and whether—it is sensible to fish.

• The central beach offers the most straightforward casting, while the rocky edges hold the more snag-prone but potentially more productive ground.
• It is better thought of as a short-range, mixed-ground mark than a venue requiring extreme casting distance.
• Summer evenings and the calmer parts of the year suit the cove best; a proper easterly sea can make it uncomfortable or unsafe very quickly.

South Landing is reached from Flamborough village by the signed road down to the landing and its beach-side parking area. From there, access is down the slope towards the cove, with the beach and rock edges below the car park.

• The approach is much less remote than many cliff marks around Flamborough Head, but the return uphill can still be demanding with rods, bait and a catch.
• Fish from the open beach or, only in calm conditions, from stable low rock at either side; avoid trying to force access around the base of the cliffs.
• The cove is popular with walkers, families, kayakers and boat users, particularly in summer, so choose a quiet area and keep casting lanes clear.
• Parking conditions, charges and opening arrangements can change, so check the notices on arrival.

South Landing can offer typical Yorkshire east-coast mixed fishing, with the species changing markedly between the warmer and colder months. The rockier fringe is usually the best place to look for summer species, while winter seas can bring more cod-type opportunities.

• Bass may be encountered in warmer weather, especially around moving water, coloured water and the beach-to-rock transitions.
• Mackerel can show in summer and early autumn when clear water and baitfish are present; small lures, spinners and float-fished baits are useful when they are within range.
• Pollack and wrasse are possibilities over the rough ground, particularly in settled conditions; smaller pollack may also take lures worked close to structure.
• Codling, whiting and occasional other winter round fish can be expected when autumn or winter seas put colour into the water, although catches are never guaranteed from such a small cove.
• Flatfish, including flounder or dab, may turn up over the cleaner patches of sand, while coalfish and dogfish are possible at times.

Tackle should match the ground rather than simply maximise casting distance: the beach allows conventional surf tactics, whereas the edges demand abrasion-resistant tackle and controlled retrieves. A mobile approach—starting on the sand and moving only if conditions permit—often makes more sense than committing to the roughest ground.

• On the beach, use a beachcaster or capable bass rod with a pulley-style or clipped rig, choosing a grip lead only where tide and wash require it.
• Lugworm, ragworm, squid, crab baits and fish strips are sensible all-round bait choices; crab and worm cocktails are worth carrying for rougher autumn and winter fishing.
• For flatfish and smaller species, two-hook flapper or flowing rigs with smaller hooks can be effective over the cleaner sand, provided the tide is not dragging tackle into the rocks.
• For pollack, mackerel and bass, use metals, soft plastics or shallow-to-mid-depth plugs, retrieving steadily but staying alert for submerged kelp and boulders.
• Use stronger leaders and avoid leaving tackle in snags; do not cast lures or baited rigs across areas used by swimmers, paddlers or small craft.

The mark generally fishes best with enough water to cover the lower rough ground and give fish confidence, rather than at the very bottom of the tide. Conditions matter more than a fixed tide rule: a modest coloured sea can improve bait fishing, while strong swell can make the entire landing hazardous.

• Aim to arrive well before the tide covers your intended exit route, and reassess the water level throughout the session.
• The middle stages of a flooding tide and the first part of the ebb are often practical periods for fishing the beach, but local sea state can override this.
• Clear, calm summer water favours lure fishing for mackerel, pollack and wrasse; dusk can be particularly worthwhile for bass.
• A settled but coloured autumn or winter sea can favour codling and whiting, though exposed eastern weather should be treated with great caution.
• Avoid fishing low rock platforms in onshore swell, after heavy seas, or when wave sets are reaching higher than expected.

South Landing is not a benign promenade mark: it sits beneath high chalk cliffs and is exposed to changing tides and North Sea swell. The beach approach is more manageable than a long cliff scramble, but uneven ground, steep sections and slippery rock limit accessibility.

• Never fish directly beneath unstable cliff faces or overhangs; chalk falls can occur without warning, even in apparently dry weather.
• Wear suitable boots with grip, carry a headtorch after dark, and use a flotation aid if fishing close to the water on rock.
• Check tide times, swell and wind before setting out; do not rely on a previous visit, because beach levels and wave reach can change.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell someone your plan, and keep a clear retreat route to higher ground.
• The uneven slope, loose shingle, sand and rocky margins make this an unsuitable mark for many wheelchair users and for anglers who cannot manage a steep, uneven return to the car park.

The landing is a well-known visitor area rather than an isolated wilderness mark, so basic visitor facilities may be available nearby. Availability is seasonal and can change, particularly outside the main holiday period.

• A car park is located above or close to the beach access; check posted terms, payment methods and any closing arrangements.
• Public toilets and refreshment facilities may be available in the South Landing area, but anglers should not assume they will be open late or year-round.
• Take sufficient drinking water, a first-aid kit, spare light and all bait and tackle supplies, especially for an evening session.
• Bin provision can be limited or unsuitable for fishing waste; take discarded line, bait packaging and any litter home.

South Landing rewards restraint: fish the accessible water well rather than risking the farthest, roughest corner of the cove. A quiet early-morning, evening or out-of-season visit is generally more comfortable than trying to fish among peak summer beach activity.

• Walk down without rods first if unfamiliar with the mark, identify the tide line, stable casting positions and the route back to the car park.
• Start on the central sand for a lower-risk session, then explore the edges only in calm water and daylight.
• Keep rigs simple and carry spare terminal tackle, as the rock-and-kelp margins can claim leads, hooks and lures.
• Give other users plenty of room and stop casting if swimmers, paddleboarders, divers or boats enter your intended line.
• Respect the cove's appearance: remove every trace of line and hooks, which are particularly hazardous to seabirds and dogs.

There is no general UK rod-licence requirement for ordinary sea angling from the shore in England, and South Landing is not treated here as a clearly signed no-fishing mark. However, the area is environmentally important and local restrictions, access controls and fisheries rules can apply or change.

• Check all notices at the car park, beach entrance and landing before fishing, especially any seasonal safety, conservation, launching or access instructions.
• Observe national fisheries rules on minimum sizes, catch limits and protected species; consult current official fisheries guidance because rules can change.
• Flamborough Head has protected coastal habitats and wildlife interests. Avoid disturbing nesting birds, seals or other wildlife, and do not damage vegetation or remove natural material.
• Do not obstruct slipways, launching activity, public paths or access for emergency vehicles.
• If signs, staff or harbour/land-management instructions prohibit fishing from a particular section, move elsewhere and comply immediately.
