Skipsea Beach

Skipsea Beach is a broad, open Holderness Coast surf beach where the fishing is dictated far more by sea state, tide and seasonal movement than by permanent rock features. It is a classic venue for anglers prepared to fish rougher water in autumn and winter, while summer sessions can produce lighter-tackle sport over clean sand.

• The mark generally fishes as a mobile sandy beach, with shallow gutters, tide lines and occasional firmer/clayey or mixed ground worth locating rather than relying on one fixed “hot spot”.
• Expect the sea to colour quickly after onshore winds; this is often when better codling and whiting fishing develops.
• It is not a venue to judge solely by daytime appearance: an otherwise featureless stretch can fish well after dark or on a flooding tide.
• Shore conditions can change markedly after storms because this is an actively eroding coastline.

Skipsea Beach lies on the East Riding coast between the Barmston and Hornsea areas, below the village and holiday-park stretch of Skipsea. Access is normally on foot from available public beach approaches, but the exact route and parking arrangements can vary.

• Use clearly signed public paths, beach access points and legitimate parking; do not assume that holiday-park roads, car parks or private tracks are open to non-residents.
• The walk over soft sand can be significant, particularly if the tide is high or an access point is closed, so travel light or use a beach trolley with wide wheels.
• Choose a section with a visible gutter, slight bank, darker mixed ground or a clean run of water rather than setting up directly below unstable cliff faces.
• Check the return route before fishing, especially at night: rising water, soft sand and coastal erosion can make a familiar access point less straightforward.

The main catches reflect an open Yorkshire surf beach, with winter bringing the strongest chance of codling and whiting and warmer months offering a more varied mix. Results are highly seasonal, and the best species can change after a single spell of weather.

• Codling are the headline autumn and winter target, especially when a coloured sea follows northerly or easterly weather.
• Whiting commonly provide reliable cold-water sport, particularly into darkness and through the latter part of the flood.
• Dabs and flounders are regular sandy-ground species and can save a session when larger fish are absent.
• Bass may occur in summer and early autumn, particularly around moving water, surf and any mixed patches of ground; catches are never guaranteed on this open coast.
• Lesser-spotted dogfish, small smooth-hounds, rays and occasional other summer visitors are possible in suitable conditions, but should be treated as opportunistic rather than dependable targets at this specific beach.

A straightforward surf-casting approach is most effective at Skipsea: find fishable water close in, present a sound bait cleanly, and adjust casting distance instead of automatically casting as far as possible. Carry enough lead to hold bottom because a moderate onshore swell and lateral tide can quickly move lighter tackle.

• A 12–14 ft beachcaster, fixed-spool or multiplier reel, shockleader and grips or breakout leads are a practical standard setup for heavier surf conditions.
• Two- or three-hook clipped rigs work well for whiting, dabs and other smaller fish; use appropriately sized hooks and avoid overloading the rig with bait.
• For codling, a pulley rig, pennel-style presentation or another robust single-hook rig with a substantial bait is a sensible choice where mixed or rougher ground is present.
• Lugworm, ragworm, fresh or frozen crab, mussel, squid and fish baits all have a place; worm-and-crab or worm-and-mussel cocktails are traditional cold-water options.
• Start by placing one bait in the first gutter or behind the near surf line and, if carrying a second rod, vary the range to identify where fish are feeding.
• Use a headlamp, reflective rod tips and secure rod rests for night fishing, but keep loose equipment well above the advancing tide.

Skipsea can produce throughout the tide, but fish often use the deeperened water and stirred food around a building flood, the turn of the tide and the first part of the ebb. The most productive conditions are commonly a safe, fishable sea with colour and movement rather than a completely flat, crystal-clear beach.

• A flooding tide into darkness is a strong general starting point for whiting, codling and summer bass, although local conditions always override the rule.
• Fish close to high water when access allows: deeper water may come nearer to the beach, but do not allow the tide to cut off your exit.
• Moderate onshore wind can improve the water colour and food wash, while a hard easterly or northeasterly sea can become unsafe and unfishable very quickly.
• After rough weather, allow for changed gullies, steeper scarps, debris and altered beach access; scout in daylight if possible.
• In calmer summer weather, dawn, dusk and darkness are often preferable to bright daytime periods, particularly for bass and other wary species.
• Check a reliable local tide table, marine forecast, wind direction and swell forecast immediately before travelling.

This is an exposed natural beach rather than a managed fishing promenade, and the principal hazards are tide, surf, soft sand and cliff erosion. A good catch is never worth being trapped by the sea or fishing beneath an unstable edge.

• Keep well clear of cliff bases, slumps and overhangs; the Holderness cliffs are prone to erosion and can fail without warning.
• Set up with a generous margin above the expected high-water line, monitor the tide throughout the session and retain a clear route back to the access point.
• Do not fish close to the water in heavy surf, storm-force winds, lightning or poor visibility, and avoid lone sessions in severe conditions.
• Wear suitable footwear for wet, uneven sand and carry warm waterproof layers; exposed wind chill can be substantial even when the air temperature seems mild.
• Mobile signal, lighting and safe footing cannot be assumed everywhere along the beach. Tell someone your plan, take a charged phone and use a proper headtorch after dark.
• Beach access may be difficult for anglers with limited mobility because routes can involve uneven paths, soft sand, slopes and steps; inspect the chosen entrance rather than relying on generic accessibility information.

Facilities are limited at the beach itself, so Skipsea is best approached as a self-sufficient fishing session. Nearby village and holiday-park areas may offer seasonal services, but these should not be treated as shore-angling facilities.

• Take drinking water, food, a first-aid kit, spare batteries, rubbish bags and all bait and tackle needed for the session.
• Parking, toilets, refreshments and opening hours can be seasonal, private or subject to change; confirm them locally before setting out.
• Do not leave bait packaging, line, discarded hooks or any litter on the sand, as this presents a serious hazard to wildlife, dogs and other beach users.
• If using a vehicle, park only where permitted and avoid blocking access for residents, emergency vehicles, farm traffic or beach users.

Success at Skipsea usually comes from reading the beach and matching the session to the weather, not from chasing a single casting distance. Arrive early enough to walk the chosen area and look for changes in the surf before committing to a peg.

• Look for a darker, smoother line beyond breaking waves, a channel running along the beach, a gap in the surf, or a pronounced depression left by the retreating tide; these are often more useful than a featureless sand bar.
• In a coloured winter sea, do not overlook short-range casts into the first gutter: food can be concentrated surprisingly close to the shore.
• Carry both clipped multi-hook rigs for smaller fish and a stronger larger-bait setup for codling so that you can respond to what the conditions suggest.
• Fresh, well-secured bait matters in surf; elasticated baits and aerodynamic clipped rigs help preserve presentation during a hard cast.
• Keep a simple catch and conditions diary, noting tide stage, wind, sea colour and where bites occurred. Over several visits this is more valuable than any one-off report.
• Be considerate of walkers, dogs, swimmers and other anglers, and leave plenty of space around casting areas.

There is no general indication that recreational sea angling is universally prohibited along Skipsea Beach, but access conditions can be controlled at individual entry points and adjacent private land. Rules affecting sea anglers, retained fish and bait collection can change, so official information and local signage take precedence over any guide.

• Observe all signs concerning access, parking, seasonal restrictions, conservation areas, dogs and private property; if an approach is signed as private or prohibited, use another lawful public access point.
• Follow current national rules for recreational sea angling, including any species-specific restrictions on retaining fish. Bass measures in particular can change, so check the latest official guidance before keeping any bass.
• Check current minimum conservation reference sizes, local fisheries byelaws and any shellfish, bait-digging or gathering restrictions through the relevant official fisheries authority before taking fish or collecting bait.
• Return undersized, protected, unwanted or out-of-season fish carefully and promptly, using wet hands where possible and avoiding unnecessary handling.
• If you are uncertain whether a particular stretch, car park or path is publicly accessible, do not assume permission: seek clarification from the landowner, site operator or local authority.
