It is primarily a clean-to-mixed sand beach broken by timber groynes, with conditions changing markedly after easterly weather and with beach movement.

• It is generally a better mark for anglers prepared to fish a moving, coloured sea than for those expecting consistently calm-water sport.
• Winter whiting and codling are the traditional draws, while warmer months can produce bass, flatfish and other mixed beach species.

• After rough weather, concentrate on the cleaner edges of coloured water and fishable gutters rather than forcing baits into the heaviest, most snag-prone wash.
• In calmer weather, lighten the presentation, use fresh worm or crab where appropriate, and target the clearer gully edges for flatfish and bass.
• Keep casts low and controlled near the groynes; a little less distance is preferable to losing rigs or creating a hazard for other beach users.
• Ask a reputable local tackle shop for current bait availability, recent catches and which stretches are fishing safely, as Holderness beaches alter rapidly.
• Check baits regularly in surf or weed, since a perfectly presented bait can quickly become buried, stripped or wrapped in debris.

There is no known blanket prohibition on sea angling at Hornsea South Beach, but local management arrangements can apply around promenades, bathing areas, events and coastal works.
