Cowden Beach

5.4· Beach · East Riding of Yorkshire

Cowden Beach is a quiet, exposed Holderness sandy shore backed by soft, rapidly eroding cliffs, best approached from established public access points or the nearby caravan-park area rather than by climbing the cliff face. It is a tide- and weather-led mark, generally most productive on a flooding tide or after an onshore sea, with distance casting over sand and mixed ground often useful for codling, whiting, flats and occasional rays.

Cowden is an exposed, changing Holderness beach where the productive water is dictated by tide, sea state and the day’s gullies rather than a fixed casting spot. Its strongest pattern is autumn and winter fishing on the middle-to-upper flood in a moderate, coloured sea, with codling and whiting the principal targets. In calmer summer weather, cleaner sand and lighter bait presentation can bring dabs, plaice, flounder and occasional bass.

  • Fish Cowden’s fresh gullies instead of trusting last season’s hotspot
  • Match coloured floodwater to a codling-and-whiting plan
  • Know when calmer sand suits dabs and flatfish better
  • Use a nearby beach backup when Cowden’s access or sea state turns
