Atwick Beach

Atwick Beach is a classic Holderness Coast surf-fishing mark: a broad, open beach below soft, rapidly eroding cliffs, with groynes and changing gullies adding fish-holding features. It is most often fished for autumn and winter codling, but can produce a useful mixed bag through the year when sea and tide conditions are right.

• The venue suits anglers prepared to move along the beach to find a clean gutter, a break in the surf or the end of a groyne.
• It is generally a more productive mark in coloured, moving water than in bright, calm and very clear conditions.
• The seabed changes after rough weather, so the most productive casting line can vary considerably from one visit to the next.

Atwick lies on the East Riding coast north of Hornsea, with beach access available from the village area via public routes down the cliff. The beach is open and exposed, and the walk over sand can become lengthy around low water.

• Approach from Atwick village and use the established public beach access; follow any signs, barriers and seasonal notices at the time of arrival.
• Parking is usually sought in or around the village, but spaces, charges and restrictions can change, so check local signs rather than assuming roadside parking is permitted.
• Access involves uneven paths, steps or slopes depending on the route used, followed by soft sand; it is not an easy mark for heavily laden anglers.
• Do not create shortcuts down the cliff or climb unstable slopes. Holderness cliffs can fail without warning, particularly after rain, frost or rough seas.

Atwick is best known locally for codling in the colder months, while whiting often provide the most consistent sport on winter evenings. Summer and early autumn can bring a wider range of smaller and more mobile species.

• Codling and occasional larger cod are the principal autumn-to-winter targets, especially after a north-easterly sea has put colour into the water.
• Whiting, dab and flounder are regular possibilities in the cooler part of the year.
• Bass can appear in warmer months, particularly around surf, gullies and cleaner water, although catches are often tide- and condition-dependent.
• Eel, dogfish, small pollack around structure, mackerel in suitable clear-water periods, and the occasional ray or other mixed-ground visitor are all possible rather than guaranteed catches.
• Small fish are common at times; sensible hook size and bait choice should reflect whether the aim is a mixed bag or a larger codling/bass target.

A simple, robust beach setup is the sensible starting point at Atwick, with enough lead grip to hold station in surf and lateral tide. Fish the visible features rather than casting blindly as far as possible.

• Use a beachcaster or other capable shore rod with a reliable reel, suitable main line and a shockleader where required for the casting weight being used.
• A two-hook flapper or clipped-down rig is useful for whiting, dabs and general mixed fishing; a pulley-style or single-hook rig is a practical option when targeting codling or bass among snags and surf.
• Carry a range of grip leads, as the required holding power changes quickly with tide, wind and sea state.
• Lugworm, ragworm, squid, mackerel strip and cocktails of worm with squid are dependable all-round baits; fresh crab can be especially worth carrying when bass and summer species are about.
• Cast into gutters, darker strips of water, surf lines and alongside—but not onto—groyne ends. A short or medium cast into a close feature can outfish a long cast over featureless sand.
• In clear, calm summer water, a small spinner, metal lure or baited float can be worth trying for mackerel or bass where conditions and local rules allow.

The latter part of the flood tide and the period around high water are often the most comfortable and productive times to fish, giving access to deeper water and active surf close in. Exact tide behaviour varies with wind direction, swell and the way the beach has shifted.

• A moderate coloured sea, especially following a manageable onshore blow, is often favourable for codling and whiting.
• Very rough conditions can make the mark unsafe and unfishable; do not confuse a productive coloured sea with dangerous surf.
• Low water exposes a large expanse of sand and may reveal gullies, holes and firmer patches worth noting for the incoming tide.
• Night sessions are popular for codling and whiting, but require careful route-finding and a disciplined eye on the rising tide.
• Strong onshore winds can push surf high up the beach, while offshore winds may make casting easier but can leave the water too clear for the best winter fishing.

Atwick’s chief hazards are the unstable cliffs, changing tide and heavy surf rather than the fishing itself. Treat it as an exposed natural beach, not a managed promenade.

• Never fish directly beneath the cliffs, sit against their base or shelter in cliff recesses; falls and slumps are a serious risk.
• Check tide times before setting out and maintain a clear route back to the access point. Do not allow the flood tide to cut off a walk along the beach.
• Groynes, sea-defence material and wet clay can be slippery; avoid crossing groynes in swell and use a headtorch after dark.
• Wear suitable boots or waders, warm waterproof clothing and a flotation aid where conditions warrant it. Let someone know where you are fishing.
• Mobile reception and rescue access should not be assumed to be straightforward on every part of this coast. In a coastal emergency call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
• The uneven access and soft sand make this a difficult mark for anglers with limited mobility, and it is not well suited to wheelchair access.

Facilities are limited at the beach itself, so anglers should arrive self-sufficient and avoid leaving equipment or rubbish on the sand. Atwick village offers more support than the shoreline, but availability can be seasonal.

• Take drinking water, food, a first-aid kit, headtorch, spare batteries and a means of keeping a phone dry.
• Public toilets, shops and hospitality options may be available in the village or nearby settlements, but opening hours should be checked before an early or late session.
• There are no beach-side tackle facilities to rely on, so bring spare rigs, leads, bait elastic and enough bait for the intended tide.
• Take all line, bait packaging, discarded tackle and litter home; lost line around groynes and beach debris is a hazard to wildlife and other users.

The best local approach is to arrive early, inspect the beach and let the sea dictate the plan. Atwick can reward mobility and observation far more than simply putting out the longest cast.

• Walk the available ground at low water when safe, looking for newly cut channels, depressions and changes from smooth sand to broken or mixed ground.
• If one area is clogged with weed or the lead will not hold, move rather than persisting with unsuitable tackle or casting line.
• For codling, concentrate effort during autumn and winter when there is some colour and movement in the water; fresh, bulky worm-and-squid baits are a sound starting point.
• For whiting, fish into darkness with smaller, neat worm or squid baits and keep hooks baited regularly.
• Avoid overcasting shallow close-in surf and gutters, particularly for bass and feeding codling; fish often use these areas on the flood.
• Respect walkers, dog owners and other beach users, and keep rods and cast lines clear of busy access routes.

There is no indication that sea angling is universally prohibited at Atwick Beach, but access and fishing can be affected by temporary safety works, erosion controls, private land boundaries or local restrictions. It is the angler’s responsibility to confirm the current position on arrival.

• Check all notices at the village, car park, beach entrance and sea-defence works; obey closures, warning signs and directions from landowners or authorities.
• Recreational sea angling in England does not ordinarily require the Environment Agency freshwater rod licence, but this does not remove the need to comply with local access rules, fishery byelaws and conservation measures.
• Observe current minimum-size, catch-limit, protected-species and any bass-management rules; these can change, so verify them through official UK fisheries guidance before fishing.
• Return protected, undersized and unwanted fish carefully, and avoid retaining fish unless you are certain it is lawful and suitable to keep.
• Do not disturb nesting birds, dunes, cliff vegetation or wildlife, and check whether any site-specific environmental designations or seasonal restrictions apply to the section of coast you intend to use.
