Sales Point

Sales Point is a remote, tide-led Essex estuary mark on the lower Blackwater, generally associated with the Bradwell-on-Sea/Dengie shore. It is a place for patient bait fishing rather than a comfort-orientated beach venue, with changing mud, creeks and channels dictating the fishing.

The mark is reached from the Bradwell-on-Sea side of the Dengie Peninsula, with the final approach normally involving rural lanes and a walk rather than parking beside the water. Exact fishable positions can change as the foreshore, sea defences and access arrangements change.

Sales Point is principally an estuary and shallow-water mixed-bag venue, with the better species depending heavily on season, salinity and the state of tide. Do not expect every listed species on every visit.

Bait fishing is the sensible starting point at Sales Point, with casts placed into any identifiable deeper water, creek mouth or tidal run rather than simply cast as far as possible. Carry only what you can safely move over uneven ground and mud.

Tide is the key to this mark: much of the surrounding foreshore can become very shallow or inaccessible at low water. A building tide, high-water period and the first part of the ebb commonly provide the most practical and productive fishing.

This is not an easy-access promenade mark. Soft mud, hidden channels, slippery banks, wind exposure and an isolated setting require careful planning, especially if fishing alone or after dark.

Facilities at the point itself should be treated as non-existent. Bring food, water, a charged phone, lighting and all fishing essentials, and use shops, fuel and toilets in the surrounding villages before heading to the shore.

A little reconnaissance in daylight is worth far more here than blindly setting up at the first gap in the sea wall. Watch the water on a previous tide if possible, as channels and fishable depth can be very localised.

There is no clear basis to describe all fishing at Sales Point as officially prohibited, but access to this type of Essex shoreline can involve private farmland, sea-wall routes, conservation land and sensitive saltmarsh. Check current signs, landowner instructions and any site-specific restrictions before fishing, and leave immediately if access is signed as closed.
