The Strood

The Strood is the tidal crossing between mainland Essex and West Mersea, bordering shallow, muddy estuarine water and saltmarsh rather than an open-coast beach. It can produce enjoyable inshore fishing, particularly for flounder, bass and mullet, but it is a place where safe positioning and tide awareness matter more than casting distance.

• Treat it primarily as an estuary and tidal-creek mark: fish often follow the channels and gutters rather than holding close to every section of bank.
• The best prospects are usually on a flooding or ebbing tide when coloured water is moving, rather than around prolonged slack water.
• It is not a comfortable or suitable venue for fishing from the carriageway itself; use only a genuinely safe, lawful bank or public-access position.

The Strood carries the road linking West Mersea with the mainland and is crossed by the tide at high water. Access to fishable water can be constrained by roads, ditches, saltmarsh, private land and the need to keep clear of traffic.

• Do not set up on the road, its narrow margins, passing places or anywhere that could obstruct vehicles, cyclists, pedestrians or emergency access.
• Use established public footpaths, permissive access where clearly signed, or land where you have the owner's permission; do not assume that a visible seawall, field edge or creek bank is public.
• Check the tide table before travelling, as the crossing can flood and access to and from West Mersea may be disrupted around high water.
• Choose a position with firm ground, a safe retreat route and enough room to cast without endangering walkers, dogs, boats or road users.

The mark is best known for typical Essex estuary species, with catches changing markedly with salinity, season, bait movement and water clarity. Shallow water means small fish are common, although better fish can move through on the right tide.

• Flounder are a principal target from autumn through spring, especially where a channel runs alongside softer mud.
• School bass may be present from the warmer months into autumn, with larger fish possible but far from guaranteed.
• Thick-lipped mullet can appear in calm, clearer conditions during the warmer part of the year.
• Eels, small whiting and occasional codling may show in the colder months, particularly when there is more coloured water and sufficient depth.
• Thornback ray and other estuary visitors are possible in deeper nearby channels, but should not be regarded as reliable from every Strood access point.

Light to medium estuary tackle is generally more useful than heavy-distance beach gear, because presentation in the tidal flow is usually the key. Match the lead to the current and avoid casting blindly into boats, navigation space or inaccessible mud.

• A two-hook flapper, clipped rig or simple running ledger with size 1 to 2/0 hooks is a practical starting point for flounder, whiting and smaller bass.
• Ragworm, lugworm, maddies, small strips of squid and peeler crab are productive general baits; peeler crab is particularly worth trying when bass are present.
• For flounder, use modest worm or ragworm baits and keep the rig moving only if the tide permits; short casts into a defined gutter can outfish maximum range.
• For bass, a larger single-hook worm, crab or squid-and-worm bait is sensible; fish responsibly around undersized bass and return them carefully.
• Mullet fishing is best approached with light float or freelined tackle, small hooks and bread or other appropriate local bait, only where there is safe room to fish.

Tide state governs this mark: water can rise quickly over low-lying ground and the current can be surprisingly forceful in constricted channels. A moderate onshore breeze or coloured water can improve confidence for bottom-feeding fish, but strong wind makes the exposed banks unpleasant and potentially hazardous.

• Start fishing on a rising tide if your chosen access remains safe, as fish may move in over shallow feeding ground.
• The ebb can also fish well where water drains from creeks, but avoid being cut off by channels or relying on a mudflat route that will not remain usable.
• Neap tides are often easier for holding bottom with light gear; spring tides can bring stronger flow, more debris and much greater flooding risk.
• Wear suitable footwear for wet, slippery surfaces, but do not attempt to walk out across soft estuary mud to gain distance or reach a channel.
• Check both the local tide prediction and current weather shortly before leaving, rather than relying on a generic coastal tide time.

The principal hazards at The Strood are road traffic, tidal flooding, deep soft mud and uneven seawall or drainage-bank ground. It is not an inherently accessible mark, and conditions can change quickly with the tide.

• Never fish from a position that requires you to stand in the live carriageway or prevents traffic from passing safely.
• Keep children and dogs close, particularly near moving water, ditches and the road.
• Tell someone where you are going, carry a charged phone and leave well before floodwater affects your route.
• Avoid lone fishing after dark unless you know the specific legal access point, its exit route and the tide behaviour well.
• Wheelchair and reduced-mobility access should not be assumed: surfaces, gradients, parking and safe fishing space vary considerably, and roadside fishing is not an acceptable workaround.
• The Strood causeway floods on big spring tides; never leave a vehicle where it could be cut off and do not obstruct the road.

There are no facilities that should be relied upon at the fishing spot itself, so arrive self-sufficient and leave the area exactly as you found it. West Mersea has shops, food outlets and other visitor services, but availability and opening times are separate from the mark.

• Bring drinking water, a headtorch if evening fishing is planned, a first-aid kit and a means of taking all litter and discarded line home.
• Do not expect a dedicated angling car park, toilet, shelter, tackle shop or fish-cleaning point beside the crossing.
• Park only where it is lawful, safe and does not narrow the road, block gateways, damage verges or inconvenience residents and agricultural users.
• Dispose of bait packaging, line and hooks securely; these are especially harmful around saltmarsh wildlife and dogs.

Success here usually comes from observing the water for a while before casting: look for a defined run of tide, birds working bait, mullet rolling or water draining from side creeks. Keep tackle simple and mobile, while remaining within a safe and lawful access area.

• Fish an hour or two either side of the part of the tide when water is properly covering your chosen channel, adjusting this to the safe access window.
• A short cast placed in the deepest visible run is often better than putting a bait onto featureless shallow mud.
• Use enough lead to hold without overloading the rod; if the flow is too strong for a sensible presentation, wait for it to ease rather than escalating tackle unnecessarily.
• Keep noise and light to a minimum at night, both for fish and for nearby residents.
• Speak to local tackle shops or experienced local anglers for current information on safe public fishing positions, as access arrangements and bank conditions can change.

There is no basis to describe all of The Strood as officially closed to angling, but permission and access are location-specific and must not be assumed. National fisheries rules, local restrictions, navigation considerations and private-land rights can all apply.

• Follow all posted signs, landowner instructions, highway restrictions and any harbour, navigation or local-authority notices; move on if fishing is prohibited at the position you intended to use.
• In England, a rod licence is generally not required for sea fishing, but it is required if you fish freshwater; check the official rules if your chosen water or approach is connected to freshwater or a managed fishery.
• Bass rules, including retention limits and minimum sizes, are subject to change; check the current official UK Government guidance before retaining any bass.
• Check current rules for other retained species and return undersized, protected or unwanted fish promptly and carefully.
• Do not dig bait, collect shellfish, cross saltmarsh, enter mudflats or use access tracks unless you have the relevant permission and it is lawful to do so.
