Cudmore Grove

6.5· Estuary · Essex

Cudmore Grove is a tidal sand-and-shingle shoreline at the eastern end of East Mersea, fished via the country park car park and a short walk to the estuary-facing beach. It is a mobile, tide-led mark with channels, soft mud and shallow flats; fishing generally improves on the flooding tide and around high water, with summer bass and rays giving way to flounder, whiting and mixed flatfish in cooler months.

Why this rating?

  • Small swell and lighter wind: relatively calm.
  • Gentle 10mph SW breeze puts a little life on the water without heavy drift.
  • High water at 09:13 and 21:53 — the last of the flood and first of the ebb are usually the prime spells.
  • Warm (21°C) — bright spells can push fish deeper, so favor low light.
  • Low rain risk (2%) — should stay comfortable all session.

Cudmore Grove is a shallow, mobile East Mersea estuary frontage where timing matters more than distance. Build the session around the latter flood, high water and early ebb, then place baits accurately around darker water, drains and gully edges rather than casting blindly over the flats. It is best treated as a light-to-medium bait mark for seasonal mixed fishing, with bass and rays in warmer months and flounder, whiting and other flats in cooler water.

  • Fish the flood, not the empty flats
  • Find gullies and drains that hold the moving water
  • Match light estuary rigs to the seasonal target
  • Know when low water and weed make a move worthwhile
