Point Clear Bay

Point Clear Bay is a shallow, open Essex shore mark on the St Osyth/Point Clear peninsula, with broad sand-and-mud intertidal ground and estuarine influence from the nearby Colne. It can produce enjoyable mixed fishing, particularly when fish move close over the flooding tide, but it is a mark where tide, safe access and finding firmer ground matter far more than extreme casting distance.

• Expect a quiet, exposed coastal setting rather than a deep-water, high-yield beach.
• The mark is most suited to anglers prepared to move, read the tide and fish into dusk or darkness when conditions are safe.
• It is generally better thought of as a spring-to-autumn mixed-species venue, with winter whiting and the chance of occasional codling rather than a dependable cod beach.
• Productive areas can change with weather, sand movement and the small channels left by the tide; a previous angler's feature may not remain fishable indefinitely.

Point Clear Bay lies at the eastern end of the St Osyth peninsula, near the holiday-park and caravan areas around Point Clear, looking across open water towards the Brightlingsea/Colne Bay side. Much of the immediate area is influenced by private holiday developments, so access should be treated with care rather than assumed.

• Approach only by clearly public roads, signed public paths or an explicitly permitted beach access point.
• Do not drive through holiday parks, use residents' parking or cross caravan-park land unless the operator has confirmed that this is allowed.
• Parking arrangements, gates and seasonal access can change, so inspect the current signage on arrival and have a fallback mark in mind.
• The shore involves a long walk over intertidal ground at low water; arriving around the beginning of the flood usually avoids the worst of the exposed flats.
• This is not a venue to attempt after dark for the first time: visit in daylight first, note the access route and identify a safe retreat above the tide line.

Point Clear Bay offers typical Essex estuary and shallow-coast species, with the mix changing considerably through the year and according to water clarity. The main attraction is varied fishing rather than a guarantee of any one specimen fish.

• Bass are a realistic warm-season target, especially around a flooding tide, coloured water and areas where a shallow gutter or firmer edge gives fish a route inshore.
• Flounder can be present over the softer, estuarine ground, particularly through the cooler part of the year.
• Whiting are often the principal winter evening fish, with dabs, small flatfish and dogfish also possible.
• Thornback ray and smooth-hound may turn up in the warmer months, although catches are dependent on season, bait and local water conditions.
• Mullet may show in calm, clear summer conditions; they require a quieter, more considered approach than standard beachcasting.
• Eels, small school bass and nuisance crabs are common enough that robust bait presentation is worthwhile.
• Codling are possible in suitable late-season conditions, but they should be regarded as a bonus rather than the reason to make a long journey.

A straightforward two-rod beach set-up covers most of the fishing at Point Clear Bay, but a mobile one-rod approach can be more effective when searching for bass or fishable channels. The sea is shallow, so casting to the right feature and keeping bait fishing properly is usually more important than simply casting as far as possible.

• Fish the flooding tide first, placing baits on the edge of a gutter, a darker strip of water or a visible change from soft mud to firmer sand.
• Use a clipped pulley, pennel-style presentation or other bait-holding rig when there are crabs, weed or a strong tidal pull; keep rigs simple and replace damaged snoods promptly.
• Lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab and crab cocktails are strong all-round choices for bass, flounder, whiting and rays; squid or mackerel strip can add scent for whiting, dogfish and ray.
• For bass, try a fresh peeler or worm bait in the nearer water rather than automatically casting beyond the fish. In clear, calm conditions, a light lure or surface presentation can also be worth trying where it can be worked safely.
• For smooth-hound, use crab baits on a strong, uncluttered rig and expect bites to be energetic; do not leave a rod unsecured.
• Match the sinker to the tide and use a grip lead when needed. A high rod position and a stable tripod help keep line clear of the advancing wash and soft ground.
• Carry spare leads, hooks and rigs: the mix of mud, shell and shifting channels can cost tackle.

The bay is very tide-dependent. At low water, extensive flats can leave the sea a long way out and make the ground difficult or unsafe to cross, whereas the flood brings both fish and a more practical casting range closer to the shore.

• The most useful window is commonly from the early or middle flood through high water and into the first part of the ebb, provided there is a safe place to stand above the advancing tide.
• Avoid becoming committed to a distant sandbank or low-lying flat; the tide can fill channels behind an angler and cut off the apparent route back.
• A moderate onshore or cross-onshore breeze can colour the water and improve bass and whiting prospects, but it also makes this exposed shore uncomfortable and can create a difficult surf.
• Calm, settled weather can favour mullet and more delicate fishing, though bright, very clear conditions may make daytime bass less confident.
• Strong easterly winds, fog, thunderstorms and exceptional tidal conditions deserve extra caution. Check a reliable local tide forecast and marine weather forecast before travelling.
• Night fishing can be productive for bass and whiting, but only after a daylight reconnaissance and only when the forecast, tide and exit route are all straightforward.

The principal hazards at Point Clear Bay are soft mud, fast-covering tidal ground, darkness and exposure to wind. It is not a naturally easy-access mark, and the uneven intertidal terrain can make it unsuitable for anglers with limited mobility.

• Never walk far out across mud or sand flats to gain casting distance, especially on a rising tide; fish from a safe, firm position with a clear route back.
• Wear appropriate footwear with grip and ankle support, and expect mud that can be slippery or locally soft. Waders do not make unsafe ground safe.
• Tell somebody where you are fishing, carry a charged phone in a waterproof case and keep a torch or headtorch available before dusk.
• Keep clear of any groynes, sea defences, channels and eroded edges, particularly in rough weather or poor visibility.
• Do not fish alone in marginal conditions. If the water begins to surround your position or the route changes, leave immediately rather than trying to recover more gear.
• Check whether the chosen access point has steps, firm paths and safe parking before bringing a trolley, large quantity of equipment or an angler who needs step-free access.

Facilities should not be assumed at the fishing spot itself. The Point Clear area has holiday accommodation and seasonal visitor activity, but anglers should plan to be self-sufficient and avoid relying on private-site amenities.

• Bring drinking water, food, spare clothing, lighting and a means of taking all rubbish home.
• Public toilets, shops and food outlets may be seasonal, restricted to customers or located away from the shore; confirm current availability before setting out.
• Mobile signal can vary around low-lying coastal ground, so download tide and weather information in advance rather than depending on coverage at the beach.
• Use only legitimate parking and do not block access roads, emergency routes, gates or caravan-park entrances.
• A compact setup is sensible, as carrying heavy beach gear across soft or uneven ground quickly becomes tiring.

The best local approach is to arrive early, watch the water and let the tide show you where to fish. Point Clear rewards observation: a subtle runnel, a line of feeding birds or a patch of coloured water can be more valuable than a powerful cast.

• Walk the upper beach at low water only where it is plainly safe, looking from dry ground for gullies, shell patches and routes the returning tide may use.
• Start with one bait closer in and one farther out, then narrow the spread once bites identify the productive line.
• Keep bait protected from crabs with elastic, tougher bait cocktails or frequent recasting; a bait that has been stripped clean will not improve with extra casting distance.
• Fresh local worm and properly stored peeler crab generally outperform old frozen bait when bass, flounder or smooth-hound are the aim.
• Fish with consideration for residents, walkers, dogs and other beach users. Keep casts controlled, lights discreet and the shore cleaner than you found it.
• If the beach is crowded in daytime, an early-morning, evening or carefully planned night session is often both more comfortable and more productive.

There is no blanket conclusion that fishing is prohibited across the whole Point Clear Bay area, but access can be constrained by private land, holiday-park rules, temporary notices and local safety controls. Treat signs at the specific entrance and shore section being used as authoritative.

• Check all gates, beach notices, parking conditions and holiday-park rules before setting up; do not fish where access is signed as private or prohibited.
