• Expect a mixture of clean-to-soft estuarine bottom, shingle/stone underfoot and areas of mud; it is not a venue to treat casually at low water.

The Stone is on the East Mersea shoreline, looking into the Blackwater/Colne estuarine waters around Mersea Island. Access is generally by the local coastal lanes and public shoreline routes, but the exact practical entry point and parking arrangements can change.

• Use only clearly public paths, lawful parking places and established access points; do not cross private fields, gardens, caravan-park land or signed restricted areas.
• The final approach can be uneven, narrow and muddy after rain, while roadside parking may be limited or unsuitable for larger vehicles.
• Check access before travelling, particularly at weekends and during holiday periods, when coastal parking and local roads can be busy.
• Do not rely on being able to walk far out at low tide and return the same way: rising water can isolate sections of foreshore and cut off an unwary angler.

• Avoid wading unless you have specific local knowledge and can identify firm ground. Deep runnels, rapidly covering mud and fast tidal flow are serious hazards.

This is a natural, exposed foreshore mark rather than an accessible promenade swim, and it demands sensible planning. The principal risks are soft mud, tidal cut-off, slippery stones, darkness and weather exposure.

• Check tide times and weather before setting out, tell someone where you are going, and keep a fully charged phone in a waterproof pouch.
• Wear boots with good grip and clothing suitable for wind and rain; avoid trainers or footwear that can be pulled off in mud.
• Do not attempt to rescue tackle from advancing water or step onto unfamiliar mudflats. Lost gear is replaceable; a tidal emergency is not.
• Night fishing is possible only for anglers comfortable with the ground; use a headtorch, spare light, reflective clothing and keep your route back clear.
• The terrain, uneven access and potentially muddy foreshore make this a difficult mark for wheelchairs, limited-mobility anglers and anyone carrying excessive tackle.
