The main fishing ground is the sandy frontage along Gorleston’s seafront, south of the River Yare and harbour mouth, with numerous groynes and a long promenade behind the beach. It is easy to reach on foot from the seafront, but the walk across soft sand can be substantial at low water.

• Use the promenade access points and choose a clear gap between groynes rather than trying to fish immediately beside busy bathing areas.

• Do not stand on slippery groynes, climb harbour structures or position yourself where a rising tide can cut off your return route.
• Keep well clear of the water’s edge in rough conditions; surging waves can undermine soft sand and sweep tackle or people into the sea.

The best local approach is to let the beach tell you where to fish: look for darker water, a break in the surf, a channel between sandbars or a gully running alongside a groyne. A modest cast placed accurately into moving water often beats a maximum-distance cast onto shallow sand.

• Arrive around low water on a new venue if possible, walk the exposed sand and note likely channels before they cover.
• Fish either side of dusk for the best chance of avoiding the busiest daytime beach activity and for improved whiting and bass prospects.
• In autumn and winter, keep a heavier rig and more robust baits ready for a sudden coloured-water spell, but scale down if the sea is calm and flatfish are the likely quarry.
• In summer, travel light enough to move between gaps in the groynes and avoid setting up in the centre of a crowded family area.
• If weed is running, shorten traces, use a more streamlined bait presentation and recast regularly rather than allowing a large weed bundle to accumulate.
