Hunstanton Cliffs

6.1· Beach · Norfolk

Hunstanton Cliffs is an open, gently shelving sand-and-shingle Wash shoreline beneath the distinctive red-and-white cliffs. Access is generally from the promenade and beach entrances around Hunstanton, but anglers should avoid standing directly beneath unstable cliff sections and allow for the very large, fast-moving tide; it is chiefly a flood-and-high-water beach mark for mixed flatfish, whiting and seasonal larger fish.

Hunstanton Cliffs is a tide-led Wash beach where the usable shore, tidal pull and fish-holding features can change markedly. Treat it as a flood-and-high-water mark: use low-water time only to read gullies, firmer sand and sand-to-shell or stone transitions, then set up on a safe section with a clear retreat route before the water advances. It can produce mixed flatfish, autumn-to-spring whiting, summer bass and occasional larger seasonal fish, but exposed conditions or fast loss of beach can quickly make it a poor choice.

  • Fish the flood and high water—not the empty low-water expanse
  • Find gullies and sand-to-rough-ground changes before the tide covers them
  • Match rigs and leads to the Wash pull instead of forcing one setup
  • Know when fast water, surf or shrinking beach means walk away
