Gore Point

Gore Point is a remote, tide-shaped North Norfolk mark rather than a straightforward roadside beach. Its appeal is the changing water held by the outer sands and channels, but those same features make it a venue for experienced, self-sufficient anglers rather than a casual session.

• The mark is most often considered for bass and mixed summer fishing, with winter whiting, dabs and the chance of codling when conditions and the season align.
• It is a mobile shoreline: a productive gutter, channel edge or casting line on one visit may be filled in, shifted or unsafe on the next.
• Treat it as a location to assess on arrival, not a mark with one permanent "hot spot."

Gore Point lies on the exposed barrier-sand and saltmarsh coast in the Burnham Overy–Holkham area of North Norfolk. It is reached by a substantial walk across coastal paths, beach and/or marsh-side ground; it is not a drive-to-the-water fishing platform.

• Start with current local access information from the relevant car park, estate or reserve manager, and follow only signed public routes.
• Allow much more time than the map suggests: soft sand, uneven shingle, creeks and the return walk with fishing gear can be demanding.
• Do not rely on a route across sandbanks or marshes remaining usable after the tide has turned; channels can cut off the apparent direct way back.
• Mobile signal, daylight and weather can all be less forgiving here than at the busier Norfolk beaches, so tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

The likely catch is governed strongly by season, sea temperature, water clarity and the position of the channels. Gore Point is better approached as a mixed, opportunity-led mark than as a venue that guarantees a single species.

• Bass are a principal warm-water target, especially where a flooding tide pushes bait through a gutter or along a defined edge.
• Summer possibilities can include smooth-hound, thornback ray and occasional mackerel or garfish when there is enough depth, moving water and baitfish activity.
• Autumn and winter sessions may produce whiting, dab, flounder and codling, with the better chances usually linked to coloured water and a settled, fishable sea after a blow.
• Smaller flatfish, pouting and other inshore species are useful indicators that a bait is being presented in the right part of a channel, even when larger fish do not show.

A robust beach setup with abrasion-resistant line and enough lead to hold bottom is sensible, as moving water around the point can be stronger than the open beach appearance suggests. Keep the approach adaptable and fish the feature in front of you rather than casting blindly for maximum distance.

• Use a single clipped bait or pulley-style rig when crabs, snags or stronger flow make presentation difficult; a two-hook flapper can be effective for dabs, whiting and general scratching in quieter water.
• Fresh lugworm, ragworm, crab, squid and fish baits cover most realistic situations; match the bait to the target species and the amount of crab activity.
• For bass, a well-presented crab, ragworm or lugworm bait fished near a working gutter is often more useful than an extreme cast over featureless shallows.
• Carry a selection of breakout and plain leads. Choose only enough weight to maintain contact without repeatedly dragging the rig across an active channel edge.
• Travel light enough to move safely if the tide changes, but take a headtorch, spare batteries, a knife, first-aid kit and a means of securing litter and discarded line.

Tide state matters more here than a simple rule such as "fish high water." The useful water is normally where a flood or ebb concentrates through a gutter, creek mouth or channel edge, and those features continually migrate.

• A rising tide often improves access to fishable depth close in, but it can also remove the route behind you; plan the exit before beginning to fish.
• The final part of the flood and the first part of the ebb can be worthwhile around active channels, although the safest and most productive window varies with the current shape of the sands.
• A moderate onshore sea can colour the water and improve cold-season prospects, while flat, clear conditions often favour lighter summer tactics and dawn, dusk or night sessions.
• Avoid severe wind, fog, storm surge or any forecast that could obscure landmarks, accelerate flooding or make a long return walk hazardous.
• Check the official tide timetable for the nearest relevant port or station on the day, then build in a conservative safety margin rather than trying to beat the water.

This is a serious coastal environment with fast tidal creeks, soft ground and a long walk, and it is unsuitable for anglers with limited mobility or anyone unfamiliar with North Norfolk tidal terrain. Never treat exposed sand as permanent land simply because other footprints are visible.

• Do not cross a creek, harbour channel or newly flooded gully to gain a few extra metres of fishing; depth, current and soft mud can change abruptly.
• Fish with a companion where possible, carry a fully charged phone, and have a clear turnaround time that is earlier than the point at which your route could be compromised.
• Wear footwear suitable for wet sand, shells and mud, plus warm and waterproof layers even in summer; wind chill is significant on the exposed coast.
• Keep well clear of unstable dune faces, nesting areas and any signed closures, and do not drive onto beaches, dunes or saltmarsh.
• The walk, uneven surface and lack of nearby shelter or lighting make this mark poorly accessible for wheelchairs, pushchairs and heavily laden anglers.
• It is a long walk west from the Holme beach car park or north-east from Old Hunstanton; the offshore sandbars are cut off quickly on the flood.

There are no facilities at Gore Point itself, so all food, water, bait, tackle, lighting and emergency essentials should be organised before setting out. The nearest practical services are in the surrounding coastal villages and larger settlements, rather than beside the fishing position.

• Use designated public parking only and check its opening, payment and overnight rules before a late or night session.
• Public toilets, cafés and shops may be seasonal and may be some distance from the access point; do not depend on them being open.
• Buy bait locally in advance and confirm availability, particularly outside the main holiday season.
• Take all litter home, including bait packaging, line cut-offs, hooks and damaged rigs; this coastline is environmentally sensitive and wildlife readily encounters discarded tackle.

The best local intelligence at Gore Point is not a named casting distance but a current reading of the beach and channels. Arrive in daylight on a first visit, walk the safe public approach, and watch how the water is moving before committing to a long session.

• Look for darker, smoother water, converging wave patterns, foam lines and birds working bait: these can reveal a deeper run or a channel seam.
• Fish a baited rod from a safe, stable position and use a second rod only if you can manage both without losing awareness of the tide behind you.
• Keep casts controlled near a visible feature first; long casts can place terminal tackle beyond the productive edge or into a stronger, less manageable flow.
• In summer, dawn and dusk can be more comfortable and productive than the brightest part of a clear day; in winter, coloured water after suitable weather can be the key factor.
• Speak to local tackle shops, bailiffs or regular anglers for up-to-date information on access, bait, recent channel changes and any temporary conservation controls.

No blanket fishing prohibition has been assumed for Gore Point, but the surrounding coast includes sensitive habitats and may be subject to reserve, estate, seasonal or temporary access controls. Permission to walk a route is not automatically permission to fish from every part of the foreshore, beach or saltmarsh.

• Check official on-site signs on every visit and comply immediately with any closure, no-entry zone, nesting-bird protection area, parking condition or access-direction notice.
• Confirm current rules with the relevant landowner or reserve manager, Natural England where applicable, and the Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority; arrangements can change.
• Follow current national sea-angling rules for species such as bass, including any retention, size, seasonal or bag restrictions. Check official GOV.UK and fisheries sources for the rules in force before fishing.
• Observe any local shellfish, bait-digging and protected-species restrictions; collecting bait or shellfish can be regulated separately from rod-and-line fishing.
• Return protected, undersize or unwanted fish carefully, avoid fishing through bird roosts or colonies, and leave no tackle that could entangle wildlife.
