Old Hunstanton Beach

Old Hunstanton Beach is a broad, clean sand mark on the Norfolk side of The Wash, with shallow water, moving gullies and a very tidal character. It is a versatile venue rather than a guaranteed specimen-fish beach, but it can produce enjoyable mixed fishing when the sea has colour and the tide is right.

• The beach is backed in places by dunes, beach huts and the distinctive striped cliffs around Old Hunstanton.
• It is particularly suited to mobile anglers willing to walk and look for deeper runnels, cuts and coloured water rather than casting from the first convenient access point.
• Summer and autumn tend to offer the widest variety, while winter fishing is more dependent on weather, water colour and the arrival of seasonal fish.
• Do not confuse it with the more urban Hunstanton frontage: Old Hunstanton is generally the quieter, more natural-feeling stretch to the north-west.

The mark is reached from Old Hunstanton village and its beach-front access points, with the fishable ground extending along a wide intertidal beach. At low water the sea retreats a considerable distance, so the exact fishing position changes dramatically through the tide.

• Use the public beach approaches and keep clear of private property, dune vegetation and signed protected areas.
• Parking is available around the Old Hunstanton beach/village area, but spaces, charges and restrictions can change; check on-site notices before leaving a vehicle.
• A short walk may be needed to reach a productive gutter or to get away from busy bathing areas, especially in warm weather.
• The firm upper beach is usually straightforward walking, but lower areas can be soft, cut by channels and difficult when wet.
• Avoid getting committed far out on the flats: plan the walk back before the tide starts to flood.

Old Hunstanton can offer a typical Wash and North Norfolk mixed-bag fishery, with species varying strongly by season, bait, sea state and the location of channels. Expectations should be realistic on very clear, calm water, when the beach can fish quietly.

• Bass are a prime warm-water target, particularly around late spring to autumn, in coloured water, surf and deeper feeding runs.
• Flounder are a worthwhile target over the sand and muddy-sand areas, often responding to a patient, bait-focused approach.
• Dabs and other flatfish may show, especially in cooler months and on suitable clean sand.
• Whiting are possible during the colder part of the year, with occasional better fish when conditions and seasonal runs align.
• Codling may occur in winter periods, most often when there is a proper sea running and some colour in the water, but they should not be treated as a certainty.
• Smaller species such as bass, eel, pouting and school-sized rays can feature at times; catches are variable and local reports are useful.

Simple beach gear is effective here, but the best approach is to match casting distance and rig size to the depth of the nearest gully rather than automatically fishing as far as possible. A two-rod setup can be useful: one bait placed in a close feature and another sent farther toward deeper water if required.

• Fish two-hook flapper or clipped-down rigs with modest hook sizes for whiting, dabs, flounder and general mixed catches.
• Use a pulley or pennel-style rig with a larger bait when specifically targeting bass, rays or the chance of a winter codling.
• Lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, fresh crab and squid cocktails are useful choices; worm baits are dependable all-rounders, while crab is especially worth carrying for summer bass and flatfish.
• A light beachcaster or bass rod is often enough in moderate conditions, though stronger tackle and suitably heavy grip leads are sensible when the Wash tide is pushing.
• Keep casts accurate and move if necessary: a narrow gutter, a scoured cut or the edge of a sandbar can outfish featureless water by a large margin.
• Lure fishing can be worthwhile for bass in daylight around surfy water and channels, but only when conditions allow safe wading-free access from firm ground.

The tide is the defining factor at Old Hunstanton. Much of the beach is exposed at low water, and fishing is commonly most practical and productive from the latter part of the flood, through high water, and into the early ebb where safe access permits.

• Arrive early enough to identify gullies and channels on the ebb or low water, then fish them as the water returns.
• A rising tide is generally the sensible default, as fish move over the shallows and it reduces the risk of being stranded beyond a flooding channel.
• Strong winds from the west through north-west can put useful colour and surf into the beach, often improving daylight chances for bass and winter species, but they also make casting and safety more difficult.
• Calm, bright and very clear conditions can favour lighter tactics, early/late sessions and close attention to deeper water rather than long casting.
• Tidal flow can be powerful, especially on larger tides; carry a range of grip-lead weights and do not assume a light lead will hold.
• Check a current local tide table and weather forecast before every trip, rather than relying on general tide descriptions.

This is an exposed, open beach with major tidal range, soft patches and channels that can fill quickly. It is not a mark for complacent wading, and anglers should treat the flood tide with particular respect.

• Never cross a channel or walk far onto the flats without a clear, conservative route back to high ground.
• Fish from dry, firm sand where possible; avoid wading in unfamiliar gullies, especially in coloured water, darkness or a running sea.
• Tell someone where you are going, carry a charged phone and a headtorch for evening sessions, and check the forecast for wind, rain and temperature.
• Wear suitable footwear with grip, warm waterproof layers in colder months, and eye protection when casting around others.
• Summer crowds, dogs and bathers can make casting unsafe; choose quieter hours or move well away from the main recreational area.
• Access over sand is uneven and can be demanding for anglers with limited mobility; the upper promenade/access areas may help, but reaching the best tidal features is not reliably step-free.

Old Hunstanton has useful village amenities close to the beach, making it more convenient than many remote Norfolk marks. Facilities are seasonal and individual businesses may keep variable hours, so anglers should not rely on them for an early or late session.

• Beach-area parking and public conveniences are commonly available nearby, but verify opening times, charges and any overnight restrictions on arrival.
• Cafes, pubs, shops and accommodation can be found in or around Old Hunstanton and the neighbouring resort area.
• Take enough bait, water, food and spare tackle to be self-sufficient, particularly outside the main holiday season.
• Use bins where provided, but be prepared to take all litter, discarded line and bait packaging home.

The most productive part of the session is often decided before the first cast: spend time reading the exposed beach and avoid fishing a completely flat, featureless section simply because it is nearest the car park. Local conditions change after wind and tides, so recent reports are more valuable than a fixed "hot spot".

• Look for darker, smoother water in gutters, breaks in sandbars, foam lines and places where a channel swings closer to shore.
• Fish dusk, dawn or an evening flood when targeting bass, and give a likely gutter time rather than constantly recasting.
• In a coloured sea, do not be afraid to fish comparatively close if there is a defined runnel at your feet; food is often concentrated there.
• In calm conditions, use smaller, neater baits and lighter terminal rigs where the tide allows, particularly for flatfish.
• Respect other beach users and give plenty of room to walkers, wildlife watchers and swimmers; move rather than creating conflict.
• Rinse tackle after the session, as sand and saltwater are hard on reels, rod joints and vehicle interiors.

There is no general indication that sea angling is automatically prohibited across Old Hunstanton Beach, but local controls can apply to particular access points, parking areas, conservation land and seasonal beach management. The absence of a general ban does not override posted instructions or national fisheries rules.

• Check current signs at the beach entrance for any temporary restrictions, bathing-zone arrangements, dog controls, access closures or protected-area directions.
• Follow current national rules for sea fish, including any minimum sizes, catch limits, closed periods and requirements that apply to species such as bass; these rules can change, so consult official fisheries guidance before retaining fish.
• Return undersized, protected or unwanted fish promptly and carefully, and retain only fish that are legal and genuinely wanted for the table.
• Do not obstruct access, fish from prohibited structures, damage dunes or disturb nesting birds and other wildlife.
• If fishing close to any designated nature conservation area, check the relevant site guidance and comply with all signed restrictions.
