Thornham Harbour

Thornham Harbour is a shallow, tidal saltmarsh creek on the north Norfolk coast, best approached as a quiet estuary mark rather than a conventional open-beach venue. It can produce worthwhile sport with light tackle, but timing, careful positioning and respect for the fragile marsh are far more important here than long casting.

• The mark is most attractive to anglers seeking flounder, school bass and summer mullet in a scenic, sheltered setting.
• It is a subtle venue: moving water in the main creek and small changes in depth usually matter more than fishing far out over exposed mud.
• It is not a place for casual wading or for expecting reliable fishing at every stage of the tide; much of the harbour drains dramatically.

The harbour lies at the seaward end of Thornham's staithe road, where the creek runs through the saltmarsh towards the sea. Access is generally on foot from the harbour/staithe area and public routes, but the surrounding marshes, banks and fields include sensitive and potentially private ground.

• Keep to established paths, hard harbour edges and any clearly public access points; do not assume that every grassy bank beside the creek is open to anglers.

Tide governs everything at Thornham Harbour. The channels fill and empty quickly, while broad areas of mud and marsh are exposed around low water.

• The flood tide, high-water period and early ebb are generally the most practical fishing windows because there is sufficient depth for fish to travel through the creek.
• Fish the main flow, creek bends and deeper-looking sections; these often hold water after the surrounding flats have drained.
• Very low water can leave little fishable depth and may make access to the water's edge awkward or impossible without crossing dangerous mud.

• The creek fills very quickly and the mud is soft; keep to the staithe and firm bank.

Facilities at the waterside are limited, so arrive self-sufficient with bait, drinking water, litter bags and any tackle you may need. Thornham village has visitor amenities, but availability and opening times vary.

• Do not rely on finding toilets, tackle supplies, shelter or food immediately beside the fishing position.
• Shops, cafés, pubs and other services are available in and around the village, although some are seasonal or may have restricted hours.

Success here usually comes from fishing quietly and reading the creek for ten minutes before making the first cast. The best-looking water is often a narrow, defined run rather than the widest exposed expanse.

• Arrive before the tide begins to cover the flats so you can identify channels, deeper bends, safe standing positions and a clear route back.
• Travel light enough to move if the flow changes or boat activity makes a chosen spot impractical.
• Keep casts controlled and low where walkers or boats are nearby, and retrieve promptly if a craft needs the channel.
• Match hook size and bait to the likely fish rather than using oversized winter-beach rigs; subtle presentations can pay off in clear water.
• If mullet are visible, avoid repeatedly dropping heavy leads among them. A quiet approach and patience are usually more productive.
• Give wildlife plenty of room, particularly roosting birds along the marsh edge, and avoid casting towards birds, moored craft or people using the harbour.

No blanket prohibition on fishing at Thornham Harbour should be assumed from its name alone, but access and conservation restrictions can apply locally and can change. Check current official notices at the harbour, car park and access routes before fishing.
