It is best treated as a mobile beach venue: conditions, water clarity and the exact section chosen can make a substantial difference to the catch.

The main beach runs through Aldeburgh, with shingle, groynes and a generally open cast into the North Sea; quieter ground can be found by walking away from the busiest central frontage. Access is easy by Suffolk-coast standards, although the loose shingle and summer footfall mean it is not a completely effortless mark.

• Use public beach access points and keep well clear of boats, launching areas, fishing gear and any spaces reserved for working harbour activity.
