Sizewell Beach

Sizewell Beach is a classic Suffolk shingle-and-sand sea-fishing venue, capable of producing varied East Coast sport rather than simply being a summer mackerel spot. It is particularly valued for evening and winter sessions when bait fish and coloured water bring feeding fish close to the shore.

• The mark lies on the open North Sea coast at Sizewell, close to Leiston and the Sizewell nuclear power-station complex.
• Expect a mobile beach: the depth, gullies, sand bars and amount of shingle can alter after sustained wind and sea conditions.
• It can fish very well, but it is not a guaranteed easy-casting beach; a little reconnaissance at low water often pays off.
• The most productive areas are usually those with a discernible gutter, a darker strip of water, a bank edge or a patch of stirred-up, coloured sea.

The public beach is reached from the Sizewell area via the coastal road and beach access points, with the power-station estate forming a very obvious local landmark. Keep to public roads, car parks, paths and foreshore, and do not assume that an apparently open track beside the station is public.

• The shore is predominantly shingle, with sand showing in places as the tide falls; walking is harder than it looks when carrying a long rod, tripod and bait.
• Parking availability and restrictions can vary between the beach, nearby holiday accommodation and power-station-related areas, so read the notices at the place where you leave the vehicle.
• Access immediately beside security fencing, station buildings, outfalls, intakes or work compounds may be restricted even where the wider beach is fishable.
• A short walk along the beach can be worthwhile to find cleaner ground and a better feature, but leave enough time to return before darkness or a rising tide changes the route.

Sizewell can produce a useful Suffolk mixed bag, with the likely catches changing sharply between the warmer months and the autumn-winter codling season. Small fish are common at times, but the venue has a genuine chance of better fish when conditions line up.

• Autumn and winter possibilities include whiting, codling, dogfish, pouting, dabs, flounder and occasional thornback rays.
• Spring and summer fishing may bring bass, smooth-hound, sole, eels, dogfish, small rays and assorted flatfish; mackerel can appear when bait fish are close in.
• Bass are most plausible around dusk, dawn, a little surf and moving water, especially where there is a defined edge or gutter.
• Ray, sole and smooth-hound fishing is generally more of a patient, bait-led approach than a long-range casting contest.
• Species occurrence is variable on this exposed coast, so treat reports as a guide to what is possible rather than a promise of what will be present.

A two-rod beach setup covers Sizewell well: one bait rod can search the deeper water while the other is used closer in or at a different angle. Do not automatically cast to the horizon, as fish often travel surprisingly close to the shingle lip and along the first gutter.

• For whiting, dabs and mixed winter fishing, clipped multi-hook rigs with small bait sections of lugworm, ragworm, squid or mackerel are effective; use appropriately sized hooks rather than oversized patterns for every species.
• A single-hook pulley, pennel or similar robust bait rig suits larger baits for codling, rays, smooth-hound and better bass.
• Lugworm and ragworm are dependable all-round baits; crab can be excellent for smooth-hound and bass when available, while squid and mackerel add scent and toughness in rougher water.
• Carry a range of plain or grip leads. A grip lead helps hold bottom in a cross-tide or surf, but a plain lead can be preferable where a rolling lead helps find a natural gully.
• Mackerel feathers, a dexter wedge or small lures can be worth carrying in summer, but use them only when fish are visibly present or reports suggest they are in range.

The beach commonly fishes best as the tide builds towards high water and through the first part of the ebb, although the exact productive window depends on the current shape of the beach. A moderate onshore sea that colours the water can improve bait fishing, while prolonged hard easterlies can make the shore uncomfortable, weedy and unsafe.

• Visit at low water in daylight when possible and look for channels, scoured holes, sand-to-shingle transitions and the seaward face of any bar.
• High water can push fish within easy casting range, but it also reduces the amount of dry beach behind you; choose a position with a safe retreat.
• Clear, flat, bright conditions can still produce flatfish and sole, especially later in the day, but often demand tidier rigs and less disturbance.
• A little colour and wave action can favour bass, whiting and codling, provided the sea remains manageable and your gear can hold bottom.
• Check a current local tide table and marine forecast before travelling; wind direction and sea state are at least as important as the predicted tide height.

Sizewell is an exposed shingle shore beside nationally important industrial infrastructure, so sensible beach safety and strict respect for boundaries are essential. The beach itself is generally open to the elements, with limited shelter and uneven footing rather than a promenade-style fishing platform.

• Never fish inside signed security zones or cross fencing, gates, dunes, station land, construction areas, intake/outfall structures or other clearly controlled ground.
• Fish with the tide behind your chosen position, not between you and your exit route; a rising sea can narrow the beach quickly in rough weather.
• Shingle can be steep and unstable, especially after storms. A sturdy trolley, headtorch, warm waterproof layers and a fully charged phone are sensible for evening sessions.
• Tell somebody where you are going if fishing after dark, and avoid solo fishing in a heavy sea or strong onshore wind.
• Access over shingle and potentially soft or uneven ground is difficult for many wheelchair users and anglers with limited mobility; conditions and the exact access point should be checked in advance.
• Do not approach stranded wildlife, and take particular care around seals, nesting birds and any cordoned conservation areas.

The Sizewell area has basic visitor amenities around its beach access and nearby settlements, but anglers should treat it as a relatively self-sufficient session rather than a fully serviced pier or harbour venue. Facilities, opening arrangements and parking rules can change with season, local works and security requirements.

• Public parking may be available near beach approaches, but always confirm the terms, closing times and whether overnight use is permitted.
• Toilets and refreshment options may be seasonal or located away from the fishing position; bring drinking water, food and a means of managing litter.
• There are shops and wider services in Leiston and the surrounding coastal towns, but do not expect bait or tackle supplies directly on the beach.
• A rod rest or tripod is useful on the loose shingle, and a beach trolley with broad wheels is far more practical than narrow-wheeled luggage.
• Mobile reception can vary along the coast, so download essential tide, weather and travel information before setting off.

The best Sizewell sessions usually come from matching the method to the day rather than trying to force a single approach on every tide. Arrive early enough to watch the sea, locate a feature and select a swim well away from any sensitive or controlled infrastructure.

• If the water is coloured and moving, begin with scent-heavy baits and a secure presentation rather than chasing extreme distance.
• In calm water, fish one bait closer in and one beyond the nearest feature before deciding where the feeding line is.
• Dusk can be a particularly worthwhile time for whiting, bass, rays and dogfish, but set up while there is still enough light to identify a safe route and all site boundaries.
• Keep lights directed down at your own tackle and avoid shining torches towards the power-station perimeter, buildings, cameras or security staff.
• Ask a reputable local tackle shop for current bait, species and access intelligence: beach shape, weed and seasonal fish movements change quickly on this coast.
• Take all discarded line, bait packaging and litter home. Shingle beaches are poor places for leaving hooks, line or plastic that can harm wildlife.

Fishing is not treated here as universally banned, but Sizewell's proximity to nuclear facilities means local security restrictions may apply at particular access points or sections of shoreline. The lawful public area, temporary closures and any no-fishing zones must be established from on-site signs and official information on the day.

• Obey all security signage, staff instructions, exclusion markers and public-right-of-way notices without argument; do not trespass to gain a quieter fishing spot.
• Recreational sea angling in England does not normally require an Environment Agency rod licence, but this does not override local access controls, harbour-style restrictions, protected-area rules or fishery legislation.
• Minimum sizes, catch limits, closed seasons and retention rules apply to some marine species and can change. Check current official fisheries guidance before retaining bass, rays, flatfish, lobster, crab or any other regulated catch.
• Return undersized, prohibited, unwanted or protected fish promptly and carefully, and avoid retaining more fish than you can use.
• Check for temporary works, coastal-management activity, environmental restrictions or security-related closures before travelling, especially around the power-station estate.
• Keep clear of the power-station outfall rigs and any exclusion zones signed for Sizewell C construction works, which may change without notice.
• The warm-water outfall off this beach is a well-known draw for fish in winter; fish it from the sand, not the structures.
