Slaughden

Slaughden is the exposed shingle-and-estuary mark at the southern end of Aldeburgh, where the River Alde meets the sea beside the long Orford Ness shingle spit. It offers a useful mix of open-beach fishing and sheltered estuary fishing, although the shifting entrance, strong water and very mobile shingle mean it is a mark to approach with respect.

• The sea side is generally chosen for surf species and larger tidal movement; the Alde side is more suited to lighter estuary tactics.
• It is a naturally changeable venue: a productive gutter, scoured hole or clean patch can be altered or disappear after a period of easterly weather.
• Slaughden is often fished as part of an Aldeburgh session, with anglers moving between the town beach, the southern shingle and safer accessible stretches of the river according to wind and tide.

Slaughden lies immediately south of Aldeburgh, around the old river mouth and the start of the shingle ridge running towards Orford Ness. Access is normally from Aldeburgh and the Slaughden end of the seafront, followed by a walk over loose shingle to a suitable open beach position.

• Parking and access arrangements in Aldeburgh can be busy, charged or restricted in season, so use signed public parking and do not obstruct residents, launching areas, roads or emergency access.
• The walk is straightforward in distance but hard work on deep shingle, particularly with a trolley or heavy beach gear.
• Do not attempt to walk out along the exposed spit or towards the Ness simply to gain distance from other anglers; the terrain is unstable and routes can be cut off by tide and weather.
• Choose a spot with plenty of room behind and beside you for casting, especially when fishing the sea beach in a crosswind.

The likely catches vary sharply between the open coast and the tidal Alde, and are strongly seasonal. Flatfish and smaller whiting-type winter fishing are among the more realistic targets from the sea beach, while the estuary can reward patient anglers with mixed fish on the right tide.

• Sea-beach possibilities include bass, flounder, dab, plaice, sole, whiting, pouting, eel and occasional codling in colder periods; rays may also occur when conditions and local feeding areas suit them.
• The estuarine water can hold flounder, bass, eel, mullet and other small estuary species; mullet are best regarded as a specialist, often highly selective target rather than a dependable catch.
• School bass and undersize fish are possible in shallow summer water, so careful handling and prompt release are important.
• The precise mix is affected by freshwater flow, clarity, baitfish, sea state and the ever-changing channel, so recent local reports are more valuable than old catch records.

Match the approach to the water being fished: the sea side usually calls for a robust beach setup, whereas the Alde is often better covered with lighter gear and controlled casts. Reading the beach before setting up is worthwhile, looking for darker water, gullies, seams and areas where the surf breaks unevenly.

• On the open beach, a two- or three-hook clipped rig, pulley rig or simple flowing rig covers most general fishing; use enough grip lead to hold safely rather than automatically casting the heaviest lead available.
• Lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, squid, mackerel strip and small fish baits are useful general options, with worm and crab often favoured for bass and flatfish.
• For flounder and dab, smaller hooks, neat worm baits and a bait presented close to the seabed are usually more productive than oversized winter baits.
• In the river, use a running ledger, light fixed-spool outfit or float where conditions permit, and keep casts sensible: fishable water is often closer than it looks.
• Carry spare leads and terminal tackle. Abrasion from shingle, shell, debris and shifting ground is common, particularly after rough weather.

A moving tide is generally the starting point at Slaughden, but the strength and direction of the flow deserve more attention than a simple high-water rule. Many anglers favour the latter part of the flood and the first part of the ebb on the sea side, while estuary sessions are often planned around manageable flow rather than maximum current.

• Fish the sea beach when there is enough water over the shingle to form a defined edge or gutter; low water can leave a broad, shallow-looking foreshore and reduce practical fishing options.
• The Alde entrance and nearby channels can run hard, especially on larger tides. Avoid placing baits where they will continually drag, and do not wade to reach deeper water.
• A moderate onshore or alongshore sea can stir food and improve beach fishing, but a strong easterly can make the bank uncomfortable, dangerous and difficult to fish.
• Calm, clear summer conditions can favour lighter estuary work and mullet watching, whereas coloured autumn and winter water may suit worm, crab and fish baits on the beach.
• Check the current tide prediction and weather forecast immediately before travelling; sandbars, channels and safe standing areas should never be assumed to be the same as on a previous visit.

The principal hazards at Slaughden are loose shingle, powerful tidal flow, soft or unstable margins near the estuary and exposure to wind and weather. It is not an ideal mark for anglers with limited mobility, particularly if the intended swim requires crossing deep shingle or negotiating uneven banks.

• Keep well back from the river edge and any visibly undercut or soft ground; shingle and mud can collapse without much warning.
• Never wade in the entrance area or try to cross channels, sandbars or the river mouth. The water can deepen abruptly and currents may be far stronger than they appear.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell someone your plan, carry a charged phone and leave before darkness if you do not know the ground.
• Wear suitable footwear with ankle support, warm/waterproof layers and a headtorch for evening sessions; wind chill on the open shingle can be significant.
• Avoid casting across walkers, dogs, sailing activity or other beach users, and retrieve immediately if boats or water users could encounter your line.
• There is no assumption of step-free access to a practical fishing position, and wheelchair or reduced-mobility anglers should inspect the route and surface in person before committing to a session.

Aldeburgh provides the nearest useful range of shops, food outlets, public conveniences and general visitor facilities, while Slaughden itself is comparatively exposed and limited. Treat the fishing position as self-sufficient rather than expecting tackle, shelter, drinking water or toilets at the water's edge.

• Buy bait, food, water and any essential tackle before walking down to the mark; availability and opening hours vary seasonally.
• Public toilets and parking provision may be available in Aldeburgh, but check current local notices rather than relying on old information.
• Take all litter, line offcuts, bait packaging and discarded tackle home. Shingle beaches and estuary margins are particularly vulnerable to lost line and hooks.
• A folding chair can be useful on the beach, but secure light equipment in gusty conditions and keep pathways clear.

Slaughden rewards observation more than brute-force distance casting. Arrive early enough to watch the water, identify the safest route and select a section of beach with a visible feature rather than simply setting up at the nearest convenient point.

• Start by casting short and medium distances into any nearshore depression before committing to long-range casts; feeding fish frequently use the first gutter.
• Keep one rod versatile with worm or crab for flatfish and bass, and adjust bait size and hook pattern if small fish are stripping baits.
• If weed or a strong sweep makes the sea side unfishable, do not persist with anchored tackle in unsafe conditions; consider whether a more sheltered, lawful Alde-side position is viable instead.
• Be considerate around the sailing, boating and walking activity associated with the area, particularly in daylight and during holiday periods.
• Ask local tackle shops for current information on access, weed, beach shape and bait choice. Their recent knowledge is especially useful after storms or prolonged easterly winds.

Fishing is not known to be universally prohibited at Slaughden, but access, navigation, conservation and fisheries rules can apply differently on the beach, river, harbour-related areas and nearby Orford Ness land. Check current on-site signs and the relevant official landowner, harbour/navigation, fisheries and local-authority information before fishing.

• Do not enter private land, restricted operational areas, boat-launching zones or any signed exclusion area. Orford Ness has important protected and managed land, and access beyond public routes may be restricted.
• Observe all current national rules for recreational sea angling, including any species-specific restrictions, minimum sizes, catch limits, seasonal measures and rules governing bass; these can change, so consult official sources before retaining fish.
• Local fisheries byelaws may affect methods, shellfish collection, bait gathering, fixed gear and activity in estuarine or protected waters. Check the current Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority guidance.
• Navigation channels and moored-boat areas require particular care: do not obstruct vessels, leave lines unattended where craft may pass, or cast into active boating traffic.
• If signage, a ranger, harbour authority or landowner indicates that fishing is not permitted at a particular access point or stretch, move on and comply immediately.
