Landguard Point

Landguard Point is the exposed shingle headland at Felixstowe, where the Orwell estuary meets the open sea beside the Port of Felixstowe. It can produce worthwhile mixed sea fishing, but it is a working-port environment in which safe, legal access and the state of tide matter as much as the fishing.

The fishable public frontage is generally approached from the Landguard Peninsula/Felixstowe seafront side, rather than through any operational port land. The exact stretches available can change with port activity, maintenance and local controls, so assess access on arrival.

• The mark is reached from Felixstowe, with parking and pedestrian routes around the Landguard area; expect a walk over shingle to some fishing positions.
• Fish only from clearly public, accessible foreshore or promenade-side areas where there is no prohibition.
• Do not attempt to enter docks, terminals, jetties, breakwaters, fenced compounds, private land or areas marked as restricted.
• The ground is predominantly shingle, with patches of firmer sand and disturbed, snaggy areas around man-made coastal defences.
• This is a busy location in season, and sensible spacing is important when casting near walkers, dogs and other anglers.

Landguard can offer typical Suffolk coast and estuary-mouth species, with the better targets changing sharply through the year and with water conditions. It is most often regarded as a mixed-bag venue rather than a guaranteed specimen-fish mark.

• Bass can appear in warmer months, particularly when coloured water, surf or baitfish are present.
• Flounder, dab and other flatfish are realistic targets, especially where cleaner sand or mixed sand-and-shingle lies among the rougher ground.
• Whiting are a principal autumn and winter catch, with codling possible in the colder months when conditions are favourable.
• Thornback ray may be encountered during the warmer part of the year, although catches are tide- and season-dependent.
• Eel, pouting, small schooling fish and occasional smooth-hound are possible, but should not be treated as certainties.
• Mullet may show around calmer harbour- and estuary-influenced water, though they require a more specialised, stealthy approach than standard beach fishing.

A simple beach-casting outfit covers most situations, but tackle should be selected for the tide, wind and the possibility of snagging around defences. Carrying a range of leads and rigs is more useful here than relying on one fixed setup.

• A medium beachcaster with a fixed-spool reel and a shockleader is suitable for general fishing; use enough lead to hold safely without repeatedly dragging across the bottom.
• Two-hook clipped rigs, flapper rigs and flowing rigs all have a place: clipped rigs for distance and rougher casts, flowing rigs for flatfish and cautious bites.
• Use pulley-style rigs or sacrificial/light tackle arrangements where the seabed is rough, but avoid casting close to structures where loss of tackle is likely.
• Lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, squid, mackerel strip and fish baits are useful choices; match bait size to the target species and season.
• For bass, a worm-and-crab cocktail or fish bait fished in the surf can be effective; for rays, present a substantial, well-secured bait on a strong single-hook rig.
• Start by fishing relatively close, as gullies and feeding fish can be within easy range; increase distance only if the tide and ground allow it.

The mark is heavily influenced by tidal flow from the Orwell estuary and by the exposed North Sea frontage. A fishable-looking beach can become difficult or unsafe quickly when wind opposes tide or when large ships are moving nearby.

• Moving water is usually preferable to slack water, with the early flood and the period around high water often worth concentrating on.
• Ebb tides can run hard around the point and may make it difficult to hold bottom, particularly on larger tides.
• A moderate onshore or alongshore breeze can put colour and movement into the water for bass, codling and whiting; strong easterlies can make the sea dangerous.
• Cleaner, calmer conditions can favour flatfish, rays and more delicate presentations, although every tide fishes differently.
• Check the tide table, wind forecast and any local weather or flood alerts before travelling.
• Avoid placing yourself low on the beach where the rising tide could cut off your route back.

Landguard Point deserves more caution than an ordinary open beach because it sits beside major commercial shipping and exposed coastal water. Treat port boundaries, warning signs and changing sea conditions as non-negotiable.

• Never cast into, wade in, launch craft in, or obstruct a navigable channel used by commercial vessels; ships cannot manoeuvre or stop for anglers.
• Keep clear of all harbour entrances, dock approaches, moorings, port walls and areas signed for navigation or operational safety.
• Shingle can be loose and tiring underfoot, and wet algae, timber, rocks and groynes can be slippery.
• Wear suitable footwear, carry a headtorch after dark, and use reflective clothing or a light where other people need to see you.
• Do not fish alone in rough weather if possible, and tell somebody where you are going and when you expect to return.
• Access over shingle and the absence of level routes to some positions can make the mark challenging for anglers with limited mobility.
• The tide runs very strongly through the harbour mouth off the point; use heavy grip leads and stay well back from the edge at the turn.

Felixstowe has the practical advantages of a sizeable seaside town, but facilities are not necessarily immediately beside every legal fishing position at the point. Arrive self-sufficiently and do not assume toilets, lighting or shelter will be open late.

• Parking, shops, food outlets and public conveniences may be available elsewhere around the Landguard and Felixstowe seafront area.
• Bring drinking water, bait, spare tackle, a rubbish bag and appropriate clothing, particularly for evening or winter sessions.
• Mobile coverage is often reasonable around the town, but do not rely on it as a substitute for planning or telling someone your plans.
• Leave no bait packaging, line, hooks, discarded fish or other litter on the shingle.

The strongest local approach is to fish the safe public beach frontage and let the conditions dictate the target species. Spending time watching the tide and speaking courteously to regular anglers can be more valuable than chasing a single advertised casting spot.

• Arrive in daylight on a first visit so you can identify public access, safe exits, groynes and any restricted areas before fishing after dark.
• Use fresh bait where possible and scale down hook size and bait size if bites are sparse in clear water.
• Fish a short session around a favourable tidal window rather than automatically staying through an unfishable ebb.
• Keep an eye on weed movement; a bait repeatedly smothered in weed is not fishing effectively, so recast or alter position.
• Handle bass, rays and undersized or unwanted fish carefully, returning them promptly where appropriate.
• Be considerate of the area’s history, visitors and wildlife, especially around Landguard Fort and the wider peninsula.

There is no basis to describe all of Landguard Point as universally banned for sea angling, but major restrictions can apply around the adjacent commercial port and navigation infrastructure. The legal position can vary by exact location, so official on-site signs and directions from harbour or port staff take priority.

• Do not fish beyond gates, fences, security boundaries or signs stating that access, angling, casting or stopping is prohibited.
• Follow any instructions issued by the Port of Felixstowe, harbour authority, police, coastguard or other authorised personnel.
• Check current local byelaws, harbour directions and any temporary notices before fishing, particularly if intending to fish near the estuary mouth or port approaches.
• Observe national and local rules concerning minimum fish sizes, catch limits, protected species, bait collection and shellfish gathering; check official current sources rather than relying on old reports.
• A rod licence is not normally required for sea angling in England, but this does not override private ownership, port controls, local restrictions or any separate permit requirement.
• Do not disturb nesting birds, protected habitats or historic structures, and remove all tackle that could harm wildlife.
• Landguard is a nature reserve and the port frontage is restricted: stay on the open beach and shingle, and do not enter Port of Felixstowe land or the fort's foreshore works.
