Felixstowe South Beach

Felixstowe South Beach is a long, open shingle shoreline on the Suffolk coast, running south from the main Felixstowe seafront towards the Landguard area. It is a useful all-round East Coast beach mark rather than a guaranteed specimen venue: success depends heavily on tide, weather, bait quality and finding the deeper water among the shingle banks and gullies.

• It is most often fished for whiting, dabs, flounder, sole, bass and the occasional codling in the colder part of the year.
• The beach is exposed to winds from the east through north-east, when surf can colour the water and improve daytime fishing, but such conditions can also make it unpleasant or unsafe.
• The character of the mark changes along its length: the more central, promenade-backed stretches are convenient, while the southern end requires greater care because of its proximity to Landguard and the busy port approaches.

The mark is on Felixstowe’s southern seafront, on the shingle beach and promenade stretches below the town and in the direction of Landguard Point. It is straightforward to reach on foot from seafront parking and the town, although the exact access route and usable fishing space vary with the chosen section of beach.

• Use the public seafront access points, ramps and steps rather than crossing dunes, fenced land or any port-related ground.
• Parking is generally easier around the developed seafront than at the more southerly end, but charges, time limits and overnight restrictions may apply.
• A trolley is helpful for longer walks, particularly if carrying a tripod, shelter and several rods; loose shingle makes heavily loaded travel tiring.
• Select a pitch that is clear of the promenade, beach users, groynes and any access route used by emergency or maintenance vehicles.
• Do not stray towards fenced port infrastructure, harbour works or areas signed as restricted; the Port of Felixstowe has major commercial shipping movements nearby.

Felixstowe South Beach has the usual mixed East Anglian beach-fishing potential, with species varying markedly between seasons and sea state. Small fish are common, so anglers should use sensible hook sizes and return undersized fish carefully.

• Autumn and winter: whiting, dab, flounder, thornback ray on occasion, and the chance of codling when there is coloured, moving water.
• Spring and summer: bass, flounder, dab, sole, small smooth-hound in suitable conditions, eel and occasional garfish or mackerel farther out in clearer water.
• All year, depending on conditions: dogfish, pout, poor cod and other small mixed-ground species can feature, especially after dark.
• Sole are a realistic warm-water night target on smoother, settled evenings, while dabs and flounder are often the more dependable flatfish in cooler periods.
• Bass fishing can improve around surf, discoloured water and the ends of groynes, but anglers must follow the current national bass rules.

A simple two-rod beach approach covers most situations here: one rod searching farther water and one fishing a closer gully or the edge of a shingle shelf. Avoid assuming that maximum distance is always best, as feeding fish can be very close on a flooding tide.

• A standard beachcaster with a 4–6 oz lead, chosen to suit the tide and surf, is appropriate for most bait fishing.
• Use a clipped-down pulley, flapper or clipped paternoster rig for whiting, dab and mixed fish; size the hooks and bait to the likely target rather than using oversized winter cod gear by default.
• Lugworm, ragworm, squid, mackerel strip, mussel and fish-bait cocktails are useful general baits; peeler crab can be especially worthwhile for bass, hounds and better flatfish when conditions suit.
• For sole and dabs, lighter scratching rigs, smaller hooks and neat worm or rag baits often outfish large, bulky offerings.
• For bass, a bait rod fished close in can be effective in coloured water. Mobile lure fishing with shallow-diving plugs, soft plastics or metals is best attempted only where there is clear room and no risk to other beach users.
• Carry a proper tripod or rod rest and keep lines well marked and attended; a rod laid flat on shingle is easily dragged or buried by a moving tide.

The productive part of the tide is commonly the flood, as deeper channels and the advancing water bring fish within range, although the best window changes with sea state and the exact beach section. Low water is useful for reading the ground, but it can leave a broad expanse of shallow shingle and make casting water difficult to reach.

• Start by looking for darker water, gullies, a distinct shingle drop-off, or a smoother channel between banks; these features are usually more important than casting blindly at maximum range.
• The last part of the ebb and first few hours of the flood are good periods to trial, with the high-water period often worth fishing for whiting, bass and flatfish.
• Evening, darkness and dawn are generally more reliable than a busy bright daytime period, particularly for whiting, sole and larger bass.
• A modest easterly or north-easterly sea can create the coloured, stirred-up water that brings winter fish closer, but heavy surf can make holding bottom and landing fish difficult.
• In settled, clear summer water, concentrate on evening tides, smaller baits and close-to-medium-range channels for flatfish and bass.
• Check the local tide table and weather forecast immediately before travelling; tidal range, wind strength and wave height materially affect both fishing and safe access.

This is an exposed shingle beach with a promenade behind much of it, so it is more accessible than remote Suffolk marks but still requires sensible planning. The main hazards are the rapidly advancing tide, unstable shingle, slippery groynes, surf and the nearby commercial harbour environment.

• Fish from a stable position above the expected high-water line, and keep an eye on the sea rather than relying solely on a tide-app estimate.
• Do not stand on wet groynes, attempt to wade around them, or fish immediately beside their ends in a rising sea; algae, wave wash and changing depth make them hazardous.
• Wear suitable footwear for shingle and cold-weather layers in winter. A headtorch, charged phone and reflective clothing are sensible for night sessions.
• The promenade and some seafront access points may suit anglers with limited mobility, but steps, loose shingle and uneven gradients can prevent direct beach access in places.
• Give beach walkers, swimmers, dogs, paddlers and other anglers generous space. Never cast across a public access route or leave tackle where it creates a trip hazard.
• Avoid the port-facing and Landguard-side restricted areas, and never interfere with navigation, harbour operations or safety infrastructure.
• The stretch nearest the pier is a busy bathing beach in summer; fish outside swimming hours or well away from the flagged zone.

Felixstowe’s developed seafront is a practical base for a day or evening session, with town facilities closer to the central beach than to the southern extremity. Facilities are not uniform along the whole shoreline, so it pays to organise food, water, bait and toilet stops before walking away from the main seafront.

• Public parking, cafés, shops and toilets are generally available in the wider seafront and town area, subject to seasonal opening and local parking rules.
• Bait and tackle availability can vary, especially outside normal shop hours; buy fresh bait in advance rather than assuming a late-night source.
• Litter bins may be present near the promenade, but take all line, bait packaging, hooks and discarded tackle home if bins are full or unavailable.
• Mobile signal is normally better than at isolated beaches, though anglers should not rely on a phone in place of a planned safe exit route.
• There is little natural shelter on the beach itself, so a compact shelter is useful in wind but must be securely anchored and placed so it does not obstruct others.

The most consistent anglers at Felixstowe South Beach treat it as a venue to be read on the day rather than fishing the same measured cast every visit. A short walk at low water can reveal useful channels, but always return well before the tide cuts off the ground you have crossed.

• Arrive early enough to walk the chosen stretch, identify the clearest casting lane and watch how the water is moving around the groynes and shingle ridges.
• Fish more than one distance before committing: one bait close to the first drop and another at medium range is often a better starting plan than two identical long casts.
• Keep baits fresh and change them regularly, particularly when crabs, small pout or whiting are stripping hooks.
• For winter codling, fish a properly secured bait in coloured water after a manageable sea has developed; in calm, clear conditions, scale down and expect more whiting and flatfish.
• For summer sole, a quiet evening or night session with small, tidy worm baits is usually more purposeful than fishing a rough daytime sea.
• Respect neighbouring anglers’ water. On a crowded beach, speak to anglers before setting up and leave enough room for casting and landing fish.

Fishing should not be assumed to be unrestricted simply because this is a public-looking beach. No blanket prohibition is asserted here, but local beach-management rules, seasonal bathing restrictions, event controls and port-security exclusions can apply to particular sections or times.

• Check current Felixstowe local-authority notices and the signs at the specific access point before setting up, especially in the main bathing-season area and near the southern end.
• Follow national and regional fisheries rules covering minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and any seasonal restrictions; these can change, so consult official sources before travel.
• In particular, bass rules are subject to national management measures. Check the current official recreational bass guidance rather than relying on old forum posts or printed charts.
• Return prohibited, protected or unwanted fish with minimal handling, and do not remove wildlife, bait or shellfish where notices or fishery rules prohibit it.
• Respect all Port of Felixstowe, harbour-authority and security signage. Restricted land, harbour structures, navigation areas and fenced operational zones are not fishing marks.
• If a council sign, temporary notice, warden or harbour official says fishing is prohibited or requires you to move, comply and choose another lawful section of beach.
