Manor End

Manor End is an informal Suffolk sea-angling name generally used for the exposed shingle-and-sand beach frontage around Kessingland, south of Lowestoft. It is a straightforward open-coast mark rather than a sheltered harbour venue, with fishing that is strongly shaped by tide, surf and season.

The mark lies on the Suffolk north-east coast around the Kessingland frontage; local anglers can use the name slightly differently, so confirm the intended access point before travelling. It is reached from the village side via public beach approaches where these remain open.

Manor End is principally a mixed beach mark, with the best target species changing substantially through the year and according to sea state. Productive sessions often come from matching expectations to the season rather than expecting a single species to dominate.

This is conventional Suffolk beach fishing, where a secure presentation and enough lead to hold station matter more than elaborate tackle. Bring more than one rig style so that you can react to surf, weed and the distance at which fish are feeding.

The beach is usually most comfortable and productive when the sea is manageable and there is enough depth over the nearshore ground. A rising tide is often the sensible starting point, but the exact best window can move with beach shape, surf and season.

Manor End is exposed to the North Sea, and conditions can change quickly when onshore or north-easterly weather develops. The shingle, uneven approaches and potentially soft sand make it a less easy mark for anglers with limited mobility.

Facilities are associated with Kessingland rather than the fishing beach itself, so treat the mark as a largely self-sufficient session. Check what is open on the day, particularly outside the main holiday season.

A little observation before committing to a peg is worthwhile here: beach contours, gullies and the amount of coloured water can be more important than a favourite casting distance. Fish the conditions in front of you and be prepared to move along the open frontage if it is safe to do so.
