Bishopstone Glen

Bishopstone Glen is a quiet, open North Kent shore mark below the cliffs at Bishopstone, on the western side of Herne Bay. It is principally a beach-casting venue, with a mixture of shingle, sand and naturally rougher patches that can produce the usual Thames-estuary and North Kent species rather than specimen fish on demand.

• It is a better choice for anglers who value space and a natural shoreline over easy, promenade-style fishing.
• Winter whiting, dabs and the chance of codling are the traditional attractions; summer brings bass, flatfish and occasional mackerel when conditions are right.
• The mark can fish well after coloured water and a moderate sea, but it is exposed and should not be treated as a comfortable all-weather venue.
• Fish close as well as far: gullies, changes in shingle and sand, and the edges of rough ground are often more important than maximum casting distance.

The glen provides pedestrian access from the Bishopstone area down to the foreshore, west of central Herne Bay. The route and the beach below are subject to coastal erosion, so the practical access point can change and should be assessed on arrival.

• Approach on foot from the local roads and residential area above the cliffs; use only the established path, steps or ramp that are open at the time of your visit.
• Do not attempt cliff paths, informal scrambles or damaged stairways, even if they appear to offer a shortcut to the beach.
• Parking is limited to nearby public roads or any signed local parking provision, so check restrictions carefully and avoid obstructing residents, driveways and emergency access.
• Once on the shore, walking west or east can reveal slightly different ground, but plan the return route before the flood tide covers the lower beach.
• It is not a drive-to-the-water mark: expect to carry tackle down and back up a steepish coastal access route.

Bishopstone Glen offers a typical seasonal North Kent mixed-bag rather than a single-species fishery. Catches depend heavily on water clarity, tide height, weather and the amount of bait fish moving along the coast.

• Autumn and winter: whiting and dabs are regular targets, with codling possible in the colder months, especially in coloured water and a settled moderate sea.
• Spring: dabs, flounder and whiting can remain available, while dogfish may appear after dark where there is enough colour and food in the water.
• Summer: bass are a realistic possibility around the flood tide, particularly when small fish, peelers and sandeels are present; school bass are more likely than large fish.
• Mackerel: may show in clear, settled summer water, although this is not as dependable a mackerel mark as a deep-water harbour wall or prominent headland.
• Other possible visitors include sole, small rays and smooth-hound in favourable warm-season conditions, but these should be regarded as occasional bonuses rather than reliable targets.
• Small pouting, poor cod and other minor species can be encountered over the rougher patches, particularly after dark.

A straightforward two-rod beach-casting approach covers most situations, but a mobile angler who searches the near-water features can often outfish someone simply casting as far as possible. Match terminal tackle to the amount of rough ground and the state of the sea.

• For whiting, dabs and general winter fishing, use clipped one- or two-hook flapper rigs with reasonably fine wire hooks and fresh worm, squid or cocktail baits.
• Lugworm, ragworm, squid, mackerel strip and crab all have a place; worm often scores for flatfish and whiting, while squid or fish-strip cocktails can withstand nuisance fish and target larger whiting or codling.
• Use a pulley or pennel-style presentation with stronger hooklengths when fishing bigger baits for codling, bass or rays, particularly if boulders or snaggy patches are present.
• A plain lead is often sufficient on calmer tides, but grip leads are useful when wind and tide pull hard across the line; avoid using more grip than needed on rough ground, where retrieval can become difficult.
• In summer, a light spinning outfit with metal lures, sandeel-pattern lures or a small feather rig can be worth carrying for passing mackerel, but only cast where there is clear water and no bathers.
• Keep one bait close or at medium range and vary the other cast until you locate a productive gully, cleaner patch or feeding line.

This shore is generally more convenient and productive around higher water, as low tide can leave a broad expanse of exposed beach and make access to fishable depth difficult. The last part of the flood and the first part of the ebb are sensible starting windows, but local conditions can outweigh any general tide rule.

• A rising tide usually brings fish over the shallower ground and also reduces the distance from the access point to the water.
• Moderate spring-to-neap movement can both work, although very large tides can make the beach change rapidly and limit safe fishing space.
• Slightly coloured water after an onshore or north-easterly blow can improve winter fishing, especially for whiting and any codling; it can also make the shore unpleasant or unsafe.
• Calm, clear summer conditions are better for mackerel and visual lure fishing, but can make daylight beach fishing slow and bring more public activity.
• Fish after dark for the best chance of whiting, dogfish and larger roaming fish, provided you already know the route and have checked the tide.
• Watch the waterline continually: channels and the lower beach can fill faster than expected on a flooding tide.

The main hazards at Bishopstone Glen are the cliffs, the tidal foreshore and the effort required to reach the beach. It is not a fully accessible sea-fishing venue and is best approached with conservative judgement, particularly in darkness or rough weather.

• Stay well clear of the cliff base and never shelter beneath unstable sections; soft coastal cliffs can shed material without warning, especially after rain, frost or rough seas.
• Check that the formal access is open and sound before carrying tackle down. If a path, stairway or barrier is signed as closed, choose another mark.
• Check tide times before setting out, leave a clear route back to the glen, and do not allow the flood to cut off your return over the lower shore.
• Wear footwear with good grip for shingle, wet clay, slippery seaweed and uneven boulders; a headtorch is essential for night sessions, with a spare light advisable.
• Avoid fishing directly below overhanging cliff faces, in severe onshore winds, or when waves are reaching high up the beach.
• The descent, uneven foreshore and lack of easy vehicle access make this unsuitable for many wheelchair users and difficult for anglers with limited mobility.
• Take a companion where possible, tell someone your plan, and keep a charged phone in a waterproof case.

Facilities immediately at the glen are limited, so treat it as a self-sufficient fishing session rather than a serviced promenade mark. Shops, food and other amenities are more readily found in the surrounding Bishopstone and Herne Bay area than on the beach itself.

• Do not assume there will be toilets, fresh water, shelter, bins or a tackle shop at the access point.
• Bring drinking water, food, a first-aid kit, spare batteries and a means of taking all litter home.
• Mobile signal can vary along the base of the cliffs; do not rely on it as your only safety measure.
• Use any public bins only where provided, but retain bait packaging, discarded line and fish waste until it can be disposed of responsibly.
• The nearest broader range of parking, toilets and refreshments is likely to be away from the beach, so organise those needs before descending.

Bishopstone Glen rewards observation more than brute-force casting. Arrive in daylight on a first visit, study the beach as the tide rises, and keep expectations aligned with a natural, changeable Kent shore.

• Look for darker water, small gullies, shell or shingle seams, and the transition from clean sand to mixed ground; these are useful places to place a bait.
• Fresh, well-presented bait is important here. Carry several bait options rather than relying on one large frozen bait for every species.
• Fish at least one rod at a moderate range before committing to long casts; flatfish and feeding whiting can be surprisingly close in on a flooding tide.
• A modest amount of colour and movement can be helpful, but if the sea is genuinely rough, move to a more sheltered and safer venue rather than trying to force the session.
• Keep tackle compact for the climb and use a rucksack or trolley only if it can be managed safely on the access route.
• Be considerate of nearby residents and other beach users: keep noise down at night, control lights, and leave the access cleaner than you found it.

There is no clear basis for treating Bishopstone Glen as a blanket no-fishing mark, but access, coastal-safety controls and local restrictions can change. Anglers must follow current signs on site and all applicable national and local fisheries rules.

• Check the entrance, path and foreshore for council, landowner, coastal-defence or emergency-closure notices before fishing; a closed access route must not be bypassed.
• Observe current rules for bass, including any size, bag and seasonal restrictions, and release undersized or protected fish carefully. These rules change, so consult official fisheries guidance before your trip.
