Herne Bay Pier is a convenient, family-friendly north Kent sea-fishing mark with a raised, sheltered-on-land approach and an exposed end section over the shallow waters of Herne Bay. It is best treated as a seasonal mixed-fish venue rather than a deep-water specimen mark, with its greatest attraction being easy access to summer and winter species.

• The pier can produce mackerel, bass, smooth-hound, dogfish and occasional rays in the warmer months, with whiting, pouting, dabs and codling among the more likely cold-water catches.
• It is particularly useful for anglers who want to fish without negotiating shingle, mud or a long walk to a beach mark.
• Expect variable sport: water depth is limited compared with long south-coast piers, and catch rates are strongly affected by tide, water clarity, season and weather.
• The end can become busy in holiday periods, so it is not the ideal venue for wide casting spreads or unattended multiple rods.

• For whiting, dabs, pouting and flounder, use a simple two-hook clipped or flowing rig with modest hooks and small strips of lugworm, ragworm, squid, mackerel or cocktail bait.

Herne Bay Pier is considerably more accessible than the local shingle beaches, but it remains an exposed marine structure shared with the public. Fish considerately and be ready to abandon a session if wind, waves, lightning, crowding or a closure makes the area unsafe.

• Wear suitable non-slip footwear; wet boards, fish slime, weed and spray can make a normally level surface slippery.
• Keep rod rests, tackle boxes, hooks and bait buckets tight to your position and out of pedestrian routes.

• Be courteous to nearby anglers: agree casting directions, avoid casting over their lines and give anyone landing a fish enough room.

Fishing is not treated here as clearly prohibited, but permission may be limited to a signed fishing section and can be withdrawn temporarily by the pier operator, local authority or staff.
