Marine Drive

6.4· Rocks · North Yorkshire

Marine Drive runs beneath Scarborough Castle around the seaward side of the headland, giving roadside and promenade access to rock edges, kelp-lined gullies and sections of seawall. It is a deep-water, mixed-ground mark where a modest cast can reach fish, with daytime lure fishing for pollack and mackerel and stronger autumn or night prospects for cod, whiting and dogfish; fish only in settled conditions as swell can make the lower edges unsafe.

Marine Drive is a deep-water mixed-ground venue beneath Scarborough Castle where the right section matters more than simply finding a space on the wall. Use kelp-lined rock edges and deeper rough ground for pollack, cod and wrasse-style fishing; use cleaner harbour-side wall sections when a more controlled bait or lure presentation is needed. Moving water is generally the productive window, but the mark is highly condition-dependent: swell may colour the water for autumn cod, yet can rapidly make lower edges and sea defences unfishable.

  • Know when to fish kelp-lined rock edges and when a cleaner wall is the smarter peg.
  • Turn a modest cast into a deep-water presentation instead of chasing distance.
  • Build a two-rod plan for daylight pollack, summer mackerel and autumn night bait fishing.
  • Recognise when swell may aid cod conditions—and when it makes Marine Drive a no-go.
