Scarborough North Bay

Scarborough North Bay is a broad, open North Sea beach-and-rock mark beneath the northern side of Scarborough, offering straightforward beach fishing as well as more demanding rough-ground opportunities around its rocky edges. It is a versatile venue rather than a guaranteed specimen mark: conditions, tide height and sea state make a major difference.

North Bay lies on the seaward side of Scarborough’s North Bay promenade, with a long sandy beach backed by the resort and rockier ground towards the ends of the bay. It is easy to reach on foot from the town, although the best fishing ground can be some distance from convenient access points.

• The central beach provides the simplest access, with level promenade approaches and a short carry across sand at lower water.
• The northern end and the ground towards the headlands contain rocks, gullies and kelp; these areas are more productive at times but require careful route-finding and are not suitable for a casual walk out in poor conditions.
• Parking, public transport and seasonal resort facilities are available nearby, but parking arrangements and charges can change, so check current local information before travelling.
• Avoid obstructing promenades, beach access routes and the busy seafront when setting up rods, particularly in summer.

North Bay can produce typical Yorkshire coast beach species, with the likely catch changing markedly between calm summer water and autumn or winter sea conditions. The sandy centre favours flatfish and smaller mixed species, while rougher water and rocky margins bring in more predatory fish.

• Codling are a principal cold-water target when an onshore sea has coloured the water, especially from autumn into winter.
• Whiting, dab, flounder and occasional plaice are realistic beach targets, depending on season, bait and the state of the tide.
• Bass may appear in warmer months, particularly around surf, discoloured water and the bay’s rougher margins.
• Mackerel can be caught during summer when shoals are close in, while coalfish and pollack are possible around deeper rocky edges.
• Rockier ground can also hold wrasse, dogfish and other mixed species, though tackle losses are part of fishing these areas.

A two-rod beach approach covers the central bay well, while the rocky ends reward mobile fishing with appropriately robust gear. Match the tackle to the ground rather than using one light setup everywhere.

• On clean sand, use a beachcaster or continental-style surf rod with a stable gripper lead; a clipped one- or two-hook flapper rig is a practical starting point.
• Fishworm, ragworm, lugworm, peeler crab, mussel, squid and fish baits all have a place. Fresh worm and crab are especially useful for mixed fishing; larger cocktail or fish baits are worth trying for codling in coloured water.
• For dabs and other flatfish, keep one baited rig relatively light and present baits neatly on the sand rather than casting blindly as far as possible.
• For codling after a sea, use stronger hooklengths and secure baits, and do not overlook shorter casts into the first trough if the surf is working close in.
• At the rocky margins, use abrasion-resistant line, stronger terminal tackle and only enough lead to hold bottom. A lure rod with metal lures, soft plastics or diving plugs can be effective for mackerel, pollack and coalfish when water clarity permits.
• Do not cast lures, spinners or heavy bait rigs near swimmers, paddleboarders or other beach users.

North Bay is exposed to northerly and easterly weather, so it can transform from a gentle holiday beach into a powerful surf mark very quickly. In general, the beach is easier and safer to fish around the upper half of the tide, while the exposed low-water rocks demand much more caution.

• A moderate onshore swell that has put colour into the water is often the most promising condition for codling and can improve daytime fishing.
• Calm, clear summer conditions are better suited to mackerel, pollack, wrasse and lighter mixed fishing, though they are not always ideal for cod.
• The last part of the flood, high water and the early ebb are sensible times to concentrate effort on the beach because deeper water comes closer to shore.
• Low tide exposes additional sand and rock, but it can leave long casts, slippery routes and a risk of being cut off by the returning tide.
• Strong easterly or north-easterly winds can make the bay unfishable and hazardous; check a current marine forecast, swell forecast and tide times rather than relying on a general weather app.

The paved North Bay frontage gives comparatively accessible viewing and setup space, but fishing itself commonly involves sand, steps, uneven rocks and changing tide lines. Treat the sea wall, rocks and surf with respect: this is an exposed North Sea coast, not a sheltered harbour mark.

• The central promenade is the most accessible part of the area, but reaching a good casting position on the beach may involve soft sand or a sloping shingle/sand edge.
• Wear boots with reliable grip around wet rock, weed and seaweed-covered steps; avoid fishing exposed rocks alone, particularly in darkness or swell.
• Never turn your back on the sea. Waves can surge farther up the beach or over low rock platforms than expected, especially during a rising tide.
• Carry a headtorch after dark, keep a charged phone protected from water and tell someone where you are fishing if using the quieter rocky sections.
• Give swimmers, surfers, kayakers, dogs and families a very wide berth. Summer daytime fishing can be impractical in busy bathing areas, so dawn, dusk and the off-season are usually more considerate choices.
• Check the tide before walking out over rock or sand flats, and retain a clear route back; do not attempt to cross flooded channels or climb unstable cliff-side ground.

As a major resort frontage, North Bay has far more nearby services than many Yorkshire rock marks, although their availability can be seasonal. Anglers should still arrive self-sufficient for bait, tackle, lighting and weather protection.

• Public toilets, cafés, shops and other visitor facilities are generally available around the North Bay seafront, but opening hours vary.
• There are nearby parking options and public transport links within Scarborough; allow extra time in school holidays, summer weekends and during events.
• Tackle and bait provision is available in the wider town rather than being guaranteed directly at the fishing position, so obtain bait before setting up.
• Use bins where provided and take away discarded line, bait packaging, hooks and any litter. Cut line and bait remnants are especially hazardous on a popular beach.

The key to North Bay is choosing the right section for the conditions: clean sand for a relaxed mixed session, or rougher edges when fish are holding in structure. A short reconnaissance walk at low water can reveal gullies, firmer sand and safe access routes that are much harder to identify once the tide has covered them.

• For a first visit, fish the central beach on a settled evening or a modest surf day rather than attempting the more exposed rock marks.
• Look for darker water, surf channels, changes in wave pattern and the edges of gullies; these are often more important than maximum casting distance.
• Fish after dark or at first light for a quieter session and better odds of avoiding the busiest beach-use periods.
• In a winter sea, fish securely and travel light enough to move if wind direction or surf makes your chosen position uncomfortable.
• Bring spare rigs and leads if targeting rough ground, but resist the temptation to fish a snaggy area when the sea is building.
• Speak to local tackle shops close to your trip for current bait, catch and access intelligence; Scarborough marks can change character after storms and beach movement.

This mark is not treated here as clearly prohibited for angling, but North Bay is a busy public beach and local controls, temporary notices and site-specific restrictions must take precedence. Rules can differ between the beach, promenade, harbour structures and any adjacent managed land.

• Check current Scarborough-area council signage and notices at access points before fishing, especially during the bathing season, events or maintenance works.
• Do not assume that permission to fish from the beach also permits fishing from a pier, sea wall, harbour structure or any fenced area; follow posted rules for the precise place you intend to use.
• Observe all current national fisheries rules for sea species, including any minimum-size, retention, seasonal, bag or catch-and-release requirements. These rules change, so verify them through official fisheries sources before taking fish.
• Return undersized, protected or unwanted fish carefully, and use sensible catch-and-release practice for larger breeding fish.
• Keep clear of designated swimming areas and comply immediately with requests from beach staff, harbour staff or other authorised officials.
• If signage is absent or unclear, treat that as uncertainty rather than permission and seek confirmation from the relevant local authority or harbour operator.
