Scarborough West Pier

Scarborough West Pier is a classic deep-water harbour-wall mark on the edge of South Bay, valued for its easy sea access, sheltered-water fishing and the chance of pelagic fish in summer or codling and whiting in colder months. It is a useful all-round venue rather than a guaranteed specimen-fish mark, and it fishes best when conditions suit the target species rather than simply at any state of tide.

The pier runs out from Scarborough Harbour on the western side of South Bay and is reached on foot from the harbour, seafront and town-centre approaches. It is a public, hard-surfaced walk, but conditions at the outer end can be markedly more exposed than those close to the harbour.

The likely catch is strongly seasonal, with sheltered harbour water and nearby open sea attracting a varied mix of shore species. Expectations should be realistic: this is a busy public pier and catches can be patchy, especially in clear, calm water.

Simple, mobile tactics generally suit West Pier better than carrying a full beach-casting setup, although a heavier approach is sensible when there is a swell or stronger tide. Match the rig and bait to whether you are fishing the harbour edge, the pier wall or open water beyond the end.

The mark can produce through a range of tides, but water colour, wind direction and sea state are often more influential than tide height alone. A modest sea or coloured water can improve cold-water fishing, while calmer and clearer spells favour visual tactics for mackerel, pollack and wrasse.

West Pier is comparatively straightforward to reach, but it remains an exposed working-harbour structure with deep water immediately below much of the fishing area. Treat it as a public promenade first: wind, spray, waves, pedestrians and harbour traffic all affect whether it is sensible to fish.

Scarborough’s harbour and South Bay provide far better facilities than most shore marks, with food, shops, public transport and parking available within walking distance. Availability, opening times and parking arrangements can change with season and events.

The pier rewards anglers who travel light, watch the water and move to find fish rather than committing to one spot for an entire session. Courtesy is especially important here because the pier is shared with walkers, sightseers, boat users and other anglers.

There is no reason to treat the whole of West Pier as permanently banned from fishing, but access can be restricted by temporary harbour instructions, maintenance, events, weather or safety signage. Check notices at the pier and harbour before setting up, and comply immediately with any instruction from harbour staff or authorised personnel.
