Black Rocks

Black Rocks is a rough, tide-dependent North Yorkshire rock mark rather than an easy, all-weather platform. It can produce excellent mixed fishing when the sea has the right colour, but its ledges, kelp and fast-changing water demand careful timing and robust tackle.

• It is principally a rock-and-gully venue, suited to anglers prepared to lose some terminal gear.
• Expect seasonal fishing: codling and other rough-ground species in colder, coloured water; wrasse, pollack and mackerel in clearer summer conditions.

The mark is on the exposed North Yorkshire coastline, where dark rock shelves, broken gullies and kelp beds meet the North Sea. Access normally involves a coastal-path approach followed by a descent over uneven ground; the exact route depends on which locally named Black Rocks section is intended.

• Do not assume that a path visible from above gives a safe route down to the foreshore; cliff-edge paths and informal descents can be badly eroded.
• The fishing ground is best regarded as a low-water-to-mid-tide rock mark, not a venue to walk onto casually at any state of tide.
• Check the return route before fishing, including whether a rising tide will cover the ledges or cut off the base of the access slope.

Fishing at Black Rocks calls for tactics that keep a bait or lure working close to the rough ground without giving fish unlimited time to bury it in kelp. Match the approach to the sea: heavy bait fishing in coloured water, and lighter mobile tactics when it is calm and clear.

• For codling, use a strong beachcaster or heavy rock rod, abrasion-resistant main line or leader, and a simple clipped or pulley-style rig capable of lifting fish clear of snags.
• Baits such as crab, mussel, squid, lugworm, ragworm and fish baits can all score; fresh, securely bound baits usually withstand the crabs and wash best.
• Cast into the mouths of gullies, along the edge of kelp beds or into slightly deeper broken water rather than repeatedly dropping straight into the thickest kelp.
• Keep the rod in hand or fish with a tight line when practical, then strike and retrieve positively; slow, hesitant retrieves are often punished by snags.
• For wrasse, a short-range legered crab, worm or prawn bait fished close to cover is effective. Use sufficiently strong gear to turn fish promptly.
• In settled summer weather, work metal lures, soft plastics or small plugs along deeper edges for pollack and mackerel, while being alert to submerged rock on every retrieve.

A modestly coloured, workable sea is often the best compromise at Black Rocks: enough movement to bring fish close, but not so much swell that the ledges become unsafe. Calm, clear conditions can be enjoyable for wrasse and lure fishing, although winter cod fishing usually improves with some colour and wash.

• Fish the flooding tide and the period around high water only where the chosen ledge remains safe and has a guaranteed retreat route.
• Low water can reveal productive gullies and allow ground-reading, but it can also expose awkward, slippery crossings and leave fish beyond comfortable casting range.
• A building swell, onshore wind or recent heavy rain can transform the mark quickly; do not treat a previously safe platform as safe in changed conditions.
• Avoid fishing beneath cliffs after prolonged rain or freeze-thaw weather, as loose rock and cliff fall are real hazards on this coast.
• Night sessions can be productive for codling, but darkness greatly increases the risk of misjudging exits, tide height and wet rock.

This is not a suitable mark for anglers with limited mobility, for anyone unfamiliar with tidal rock fishing, or for a first solo session on the Yorkshire coast. Its principal dangers are wave surge, slippery weed-covered rock, tidal cut-off, unstable cliff ground and an awkward exit when conditions worsen.

• Wear studded or otherwise high-grip footwear, warm waterproof clothing, and a properly fitted flotation aid when fishing close to the water.
• Carry a charged phone in a waterproof case, headtorch, first-aid kit and whistle; tell someone exactly where you are going and when you expect to return.
• Never turn your back on the sea, stand in surge channels, or fish a ledge that can be reached by larger-than-average waves.
• Fish with a companion where possible, especially at night or in any swell, and leave early rather than waiting for the sea to make the decision.
• Do not climb cliffs, cross private land without permission, or improvise a descent where the recognised route is unsafe or unclear.
• There is generally no wheelchair-friendly shore access or dependable immediate vehicle access at this type of rocky mark.

Black Rocks should be treated as a self-sufficient fishing session rather than a serviced promenade venue. Facilities are normally found in nearby settlements, not at the rocks themselves.

• Take all drinking water, food, spare clothing, bait, rubbish bags and essential tackle with you.
• Do not rely on toilets, shelter, tackle supplies, lighting or mobile signal at the access point.
• Keep vehicles only in legitimate parking places and avoid blocking farm, residential or emergency access.
• Pack out discarded line, bait wrappers and lost-tackle packaging; these rocky shores are important wildlife habitat.

The most consistent approach is to arrive early, inspect the ground at a safe low stage of tide, and select one or two gullies rather than casting blindly across the entire reef. Productive water is often close in, especially when there is a little colour and broken water over the kelp.

• Watch the water for several minutes before setting up: identify surge lines, the highest wash mark and the route back to dry ground.
