Cornelian Bay

Cornelian Bay is a small, attractive but relatively awkward-to-fish cove on the south side of Scarborough, between the town’s South Bay and Cayton Bay. It offers mixed ground rather than a simple open beach venue, with rock, kelp, gullies and patches of sand capable of producing a useful variety of North Yorkshire species.

• It is best approached as a short-session, mobile mark rather than somewhere to carry a large amount of tackle.
• The bay can fish well when there is a little colour and movement in the water, but it is not a comfortable or sensible venue in a heavy sea.
• Its sheltered appearance can be misleading: the surrounding cliffs, tidal rocks and restricted escape routes are the defining features of the mark.

Cornelian Bay lies immediately south of Scarborough’s built-up seafront, reached from the Cornelian Drive area and the coastal-path network. Access to the shoreline involves a walk and a descent, and the final approach can be steep, uneven and slippery after rain.

• Parking is generally sought on nearby roads or in the wider South Cliff/Cornelian Drive area; use only lawful spaces and avoid obstructing residents, gates or emergency access.
• Travel light: a rod, compact rucksack, landing net where practical and minimal terminal tackle are far more manageable than a full barrow load.
• The beach and lower rocks are tidal, so inspect the route in daylight before committing to an evening or night session.
• The rockier edges can provide better water depth and kelp-line fishing, while the central beach gives the more straightforward casting area when enough sand is exposed.
• Do not assume that a route down remains available on the return; rising water can cut off low-level traverses around the base of the cliffs.

The bay’s mixed seabed gives it a broader species list than a purely sandy beach, although catches are strongly affected by season, sea state and weed. Winter and early spring are the more realistic periods for codling-style fishing, while the warmer months favour bass, wrasse and summer visitors.

• Codling and cod are possible in coloured water from autumn through spring, particularly around rougher ground and after an onshore blow has eased.
• Whiting, dabs, dogfish and occasional flatfish may show over the cleaner sandy patches, especially during darker hours.
• Bass can patrol the bay in summer and early autumn, most often around broken water, gullies and the edges of the surf.
• Pollack and wrasse are likely around kelp-covered rocks in clearer, calmer conditions; mackerel may pass within range in summer when bait fish are present.
• Smaller species such as coalfish, pouting, rockling and poor cod can also provide sport, particularly for anglers using lighter tackle and smaller baits.

Choose tackle to suit the ground rather than simply casting as far as possible. A modest cast into a gully, the edge of a kelp bed or the transition from sand to rough ground can outfish a long cast straight into snaggy terrain.

• For codling, whiting and mixed winter fish, use a beachcaster or all-round shore rod with a robust reel, abrasion-resistant line and a simple pulley or clipped rig.
• Carry several spare rigs and plain leads: kelp and rock will claim tackle, and breakaways are not always suitable on very rough or snag-prone ground.
• Fresh or well-presented worm, crab where lawfully sourced, squid, mussel and fish baits are sensible options; use tough bait presentation if crabs and small fish are stripping hooks.
• For bass, a lighter ledger rig with worm, crab or fish bait can be effective in the surf, while experienced lure anglers can work shallow-diving plugs, soft plastics or metals only where the water and footing are safe.
• Float-fished worm, small strips of fish or small lures can produce wrasse and pollack along the rocks, but only fish a position from which a landing net and safe retreat are genuinely possible.
• A landing net with a long handle is useful from ledges, but it is not a substitute for safe positioning; do not climb down wet rock to land a fish.

Cornelian Bay is usually most practical around the middle to upper stages of the tide, when there is enough water close in but before the shoreline and access become cramped. The exact fishable area changes markedly with tide height, swell direction and the amount of beach exposed.

• A flooding tide into high water often gives the best chance of fish moving close to the beach and through the gullies.
• Fish the last part of the flood and the first part of the ebb only if you have already identified a safe exit and can remain above the rising water.
• Moderate onshore weather and coloured water can improve prospects for codling and bass, but large surf makes the bay dangerous and frequently unfishable.
• Calmer, clearer water is generally better for wrasse, pollack and summer mackerel, although kelp can still make presentation difficult.
• Avoid the mark when strong winds are driving waves into the bay, when the rocks are being washed, or when seaweed is moving heavily through the water.
• Check a reliable local tide table and marine forecast before leaving; do not rely on a generic weather app alone.

This is not an easy-access sea-fishing mark. Cliff hazards, unstable or algae-covered rock, uneven paths and a rapidly shrinking tidal margin mean it is better suited to fit, confident anglers who can assess coastal conditions conservatively.

• Never fish directly beneath visibly loose or crumbling cliff faces, and move away immediately if there has been recent rockfall or you hear debris falling.
• Wear grippy boots, suitable warm and waterproof layers, and consider a flotation aid when fishing close to the sea; smooth rock can be exceptionally slippery.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell somebody your plan, carry a charged phone in a waterproof case and keep an eye on the sea rather than concentrating solely on the rod tip.
• Do not cross low rocks or attempt to leave around the bay once the tide is rising; retreat early by the route you used to enter.
• Night fishing adds substantial risk because paths, cliff edges and gullies are hard to judge. If fishing after dark, only use a route and stance you know well from daylight.
• The descent, rough terrain and tidal nature of the shoreline make the mark unsuitable for wheelchair access and difficult for anglers with limited mobility.

There are no dependable angling facilities on the beach itself, so anglers should arrive self-sufficient and leave the cove exactly as they found it. Shops, toilets and food are more readily found back in Scarborough rather than at the water’s edge.

• Bring drinking water, food, a headtorch, first-aid supplies, spare batteries and a bag for every item of litter and discarded line.
• Do not expect a sheltered bait-preparation area, seating, fresh water, bins or a safe place to leave equipment unattended at the bay.
• Buy bait, ice and any essential tackle before going down to the shore, especially for an evening session.
• Keep vehicle valuables out of sight and avoid leaving tackle in a car while you are on the coast.

The most productive-looking water is often the water that also causes the most tackle loss, so fish deliberately and learn the bottom one cast at a time. A reconnaissance walk at low water can reveal sand channels, kelp beds, rock fingers and, crucially, the safest line back off the shore.

• Start with a simple, inexpensive rig and a controlled cast rather than immediately deploying elaborate multi-hook rigs into unknown ground.
• Keep baits close to the edge of rough ground, but retrieve steadily and positively once a fish is hooked to reduce snagging in kelp.
• In a sea carrying weed, shorten sessions and use tougher, streamlined bait presentations; constantly clearing weed from the line is better than allowing it to build up and drag the rig.
• Give other beach users, walkers and wildlife plenty of room, particularly in the summer, and avoid casting where swimmers, paddleboarders or kayakers may enter the water.
• Handle undersized fish and unwanted catches carefully, return them promptly, and take particular care with spiny species such as dogfish and wrasse.

There is no confirmed blanket prohibition on sea angling at Cornelian Bay, but access and fishing can be affected by local notices, temporary safety closures, private land boundaries and seasonal management measures. Check current signage at the approach and consult the relevant local authority, harbour/coastal information and North Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority guidance before fishing.

• Observe all current national and local rules on minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species, shellfish collection, bait digging and any species-specific restrictions.
• Do not remove bait, shellfish, rocks or marine life from areas where notices prohibit it, and do not dig or disturb the beach without confirming that it is permitted.
• If a path, cliff access point or section of shore is signed as closed, treat that closure as definitive even if older fishing reports describe access.
• Respect public rights of way, private property and residents’ access at all times; park legally and keep gateways, paths and roads clear.
