Cayton Bay

Cayton Bay is a broad, open North Sea beach south of Scarborough, best known as a straightforward surf-fishing venue with seasonal bass, flatfish and winter fish. It is an exposed mark rather than a sheltered all-weather beach, so its quality is closely tied to sea state, tide height and the ability to find a productive gutter.

• The venue is chiefly a sandy-beach fishery, with mixed or rougher patches and rockier influence towards the ends of the bay.
• It can produce well for anglers willing to move, read the surf and fish into darkness when conditions are suitable.
• Expect a practical beach session rather than comfortable harbour fishing: wind, sand, surf and a long walk across soft ground can all be part of the day.
• There is no clear, blanket official prohibition on sea angling across Cayton Bay, but local signs and any temporary beach-management restrictions always take priority.

Cayton Bay lies on the Yorkshire coast immediately south of Scarborough, beneath the cliffs and holiday accommodation around Cayton Bay. Access is normally made from the beach approaches and parking areas serving the bay, then by walking onto the sand.

• The central beach gives the simplest fishing, while the ends of the bay may offer more varied ground but can be more awkward and hazardous to reach.
• Paths, steps and ramps can be steep, sandy, slippery or affected by erosion; inspect the route in daylight before committing to a night session.
• Parking arrangements, charges, gates and seasonal access can change, so check the current notices at the approach rather than relying on old fishing reports.
• A beach trolley is useful on firm sand, but it may be a hindrance on soft sand, steps or uneven paths.
• Avoid setting up directly below unstable cliff faces, even if the beach appears quiet or the ground looks dry.

Cayton Bay has a useful seasonal spread of typical Yorkshire beach species, with the sea state often determining whether the session is about bass and flatfish or whiting and codling. Catches vary greatly between the clean central sand and any mixed ground nearer the bay's extremities.

• Bass are a principal warm-water target, especially when a modest surf, coloured water and a flooding tide bring fish close to the beach.
• Flounder and dab are regular possibilities over the cleaner sand, with plaice possible at appropriate times and on suitable patches of ground.
• Whiting can provide reliable autumn and winter sport, particularly after dark.
• Codling may show in the colder months when there is enough colour and movement in the sea, most often where bait is presented close to rougher or mixed ground rather than featureless sand.
• Lesser-spotted dogfish, small rays, smooth-hound and other summer visitors are possible in the wider area, but should not be treated as guaranteed Cayton Bay catches.
• Mackerel may be available in settled summer weather, though a beach session should not depend on them appearing within casting range.

Fishing should be adapted to the sand, surf and the depth of water in the nearest trough rather than simply casting as far as possible. A secure bait presentation is usually more valuable here than very long-range casting.

• For bass, use a running leger, pulley-style rig or clipped single-hook rig with lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab or a fresh fish bait; fish baits can be especially useful in coloured water.
• For dabs, flounder and other flatfish, a two-hook flapper or light flowing trace baited with lugworm, ragworm, small fish strips or other neat baits is effective; keep hooks and bait size sensible for small mouths.
• For whiting and winter codling, fish fresh lugworm, ragworm, squid, mackerel strip or mixed cocktails on robust pennel or pulley rigs, selecting enough lead to hold bottom safely.
• A 4–6 oz grip lead is often appropriate in surf, but choose the lightest weight that will hold without allowing the rig to roll along the beach.
• In daylight, look for darker strips, broken surf, channels between sandbars and areas where the backwash cuts through the beach; these features commonly hold feeding fish.
• After dark, keep tackle organised, use a reliable headtorch and make a mental note of the route back to the access point before the tide rises.

Cayton Bay is usually more rewarding around the upper part of the tide because much of the beach can be shallow and widely exposed at low water. A fishable swell and some colour can transform it, whereas very clear, flat water can be harder work for the larger targets.

• The flooding tide into high water is a sound starting point for bass, flatfish and general beach fishing, particularly where a defined gutter forms close in.
• Fish the ebb with care: productive water may remain in channels, but the retreating tide can leave a long walk and increasingly shallow water.
• Autumn and winter blows that colour the water can encourage codling and whiting, but excessively large surf makes presentation, casting and safe footing difficult.
• Moderate onshore or cross-onshore wind can create useful surf, while strong wind directly onto the beach can make the mark uncomfortable or unsafe.
• Calm summer evenings and dawn periods can suit bass tactics, especially if baitfish, disturbed water or a little residual surf is present.
• Check a current tide table and marine forecast before travelling; wind direction, swell and the actual state of the sea matter as much as the nominal tide time.

The main hazards at Cayton Bay are an exposed sea, rapidly changing surf, soft or uneven sand and unstable cliffs rather than technical rock climbing. It is not an ideal mark for anyone who cannot manage a potentially long beach walk or an uneven approach.

• Keep well clear of cliff bases and do not shelter beneath overhangs; coastal erosion and falls can occur without warning.
• Check tide times before going down, particularly at the ends of the bay where access routes and firmer ground may be reduced by the rising sea.
• In strong surf, avoid wading beyond the water's edge and never turn your back on the sea; waves can surge farther up the beach than expected.
• Use suitable footwear for wet sand and slippery access paths, and take warm, waterproof clothing even on a seemingly mild day.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell somebody your plan, and carry a charged phone and light for evening or night sessions.
• The beach may be manageable for some anglers with limited mobility near the main access in favourable conditions, but soft sand, gradients and changing access make it unsuitable to describe as reliably accessible.

Facilities are concentrated around the beach approaches and nearby holiday or tourist areas rather than on the fishing ground itself. Treat the beach as a self-sufficient venue and take everything needed for the session.

• Parking is available around the Cayton Bay beach area, but availability, charges, opening times and overnight rules should be checked on arrival.
• Seasonal food outlets, toilets and other visitor facilities may be available nearby, though anglers should not assume they will be open early, late or outside the main holiday season.
• There are no dependable fishing-specific amenities on the sand, so bring water, bait storage, rubbish bags, first-aid basics and a means of lighting your swim after dark.
• Mobile signal can vary around the cliffs and beach; download essential tide, weather and route information before setting off.
• Leave no trace: collect discarded line, bait packaging, hooks and food waste, as these are dangerous to wildlife, dogs and other beach users.

The most consistent local approach is to arrive early enough to walk the beach and identify features before setting up. Cayton Bay rewards mobile, observant fishing more than repeatedly casting into an obviously flat and shallow section.

• Start by looking for the nearest deeper gutter or a rip-like drainage channel, often indicated by darker water, a smoother patch between breaking waves or a line of disturbed sand.
• Do not automatically fish at maximum range: in a proper surf, bass and flatfish can feed very close to the edge.
• If the central beach is barren, a careful move to more mixed-looking ground can be worthwhile, but do not trade a safe access and stable position for marginally rougher terrain.
• Fresh worm is a strong all-round choice; carrying crab or fish bait as an alternative gives more options when targeting bass or larger winter fish.
• Keep rigs clipped for the cast in surf and use bait elastic where needed, as loose worm baits can be stripped quickly.
• Be considerate during busy summer periods: give swimmers, walkers, dogs and other beach users plenty of room, and avoid casting where people are moving through the water.

No general sea-fishing ban is known for Cayton Bay, but permission to fish can be affected by temporary notices, beach operations, conservation measures and the rules applying to particular species. Anglers are responsible for checking the current position before fishing.

• Read all signs at car parks, paths and the beach entrance, including any seasonal restrictions connected with bathing areas, events, maintenance or safety incidents.
• Follow current national and local rules on minimum sizes, catch limits, closed seasons and protected species; these requirements can change and should be checked through official fisheries sources.
• Bass is subject to specific recreational controls that are revised from time to time, so check the latest official guidance before retaining or targeting fish for the table.
• A rod licence is generally not required for ordinary sea angling from the shore in England, but this does not remove the need to comply with fisheries, access, parking and conservation rules.
• Return undersized, protected or unwanted fish carefully and promptly, and avoid handling fish unnecessarily if they are to be released.
