Scalby Mills is a rough, rock-ledged shore mark at the northern end of Scarborough’s North Bay, close to the Sea Life Centre and the old mill area. It is a practical mixed-species venue, but it is far more rewarding for anglers prepared to fish uneven ground and time their visit around the tide and sea state.

• Expect tackle losses if fishing hard into the kelp; use sensible snag-resistant rigs, but do not pull aggressively against a fixed snag where it could destabilise you.
