Scalby Ness

Scalby Ness is a rugged, kelp-covered rock mark immediately north of Scarborough’s North Bay, valued for proper Yorkshire rock-fishing rather than easy, clean-ground casting. It can produce fish throughout the year, but it is an exposed and potentially hazardous venue that rewards careful timing and sensible tackle.

• Expect rough ground, gullies, kelp beds and uneven rock shelves rather than a simple beach setup.
• It is principally a lure, float and rough-ground ledgering mark, with the best chances often coming when there is some colour and movement in the sea.
• This is not a beginner-friendly mark in rough weather or darkness; conditions can change very quickly on this part of the coast.

The Ness lies at the northern end of Scarborough’s North Bay, beyond the Scalby Mills area, where the promenade and urban seafront give way to rocky foreshore and cliffs. Access normally involves a walk followed by a descent over uneven ground or rock, so the exact route should be assessed on arrival rather than assumed to be safe.

• Use the established public routes from the North Bay/Scalby Mills side and avoid making unofficial cliff descents or crossing fenced private ground.
• Parking, public transport and shops are available in the wider Scarborough and North Bay area, but the fishing ledges themselves are away from the road.
• A light, compact load is a major advantage: carrying a large box, long tripod and heavy luggage over slippery rock is awkward.
• Check the route back before fishing, especially if arriving near low water; some lower sections can become cut off as the tide rises.

Scalby Ness is typical mixed Yorkshire rock ground, with seasonal opportunities for both resident species and travelling fish. Codling and larger cod are the headline winter quarry, while summer favours wrasse, pollack, mackerel and occasional bass.

• Codling and cod can move close over the kelp and broken ground in autumn and winter, particularly after a sea has built and begun to ease.
• Pollack, coalfish and mackerel respond well to lures, feathers and float-fished baits when the water is reasonably clear.
• Ballan wrasse, corkwing wrasse and other small rock species are realistic summer targets around kelp-fringed gullies.
• Bass are possible in warmer months, especially where wash and coloured water work around the rocks, but they should not be treated as a guaranteed catch.
• Rockling, pouting, poor cod and occasional flatfish may show in more mixed pockets, though the venue is fundamentally rough ground rather than a classic flatfish beach.

Tackle should be chosen to get a bait or lure through kelp without donating excessive gear to the bottom. A mobile approach—trying different gullies, edges and depths—is usually more productive than casting repeatedly from one obvious platform.

• For cod fishing, use a sturdy beachcaster or rock rod, a reel with dependable drag, abrasion-resistant main line and a simple pulley or clipped-down rough-ground rig.
• Keep terminal rigs uncomplicated: a single strong hook and a weak-link/rotten-bottom lead arrangement can save tackle where appropriate, though no rig is snag-proof here.
• Fresh crab, mussel, lugworm, ragworm, squid and fish baits can all account for codling; use bait presentations robust enough to withstand surge and kelp.
• For pollack and coalfish, work soft plastics, metal lures or small plugs through open water and alongside kelp edges. Do not retrieve blindly into dense weed.
• Float-fishing worm, crab or small strips of fish can be excellent for wrasse and pollack in calmer summer conditions; carry a landing net or plan only for ledges where fish can be lifted safely.
• Avoid ultra-light tackle where swell is present, as controlling a hooked fish around rock and kelp is more important than casting extreme distance.

The best window depends more on sea state, water clarity and safe footing than on one fixed tide rule. In general, rising water can bring fish over the shallow kelp, while low water is useful for reading the ground and identifying safe platforms—provided there is a clear exit before the flood.

• Fish a moderate swell with great care: a little coloured water is often favourable for codling, but a heavy sea makes the ledges unsafe and unfishable.
• Northerly and easterly weather can put powerful swell onto this coast; do not confuse productive coloured water with manageable conditions.
• In calmer, clearer summer weather, early morning, evening and overcast periods are good times to target pollack, wrasse and mackerel.
• Autumn and winter sessions around dusk, after an onshore blow has moderated, are traditional times for codling.
• Check local tide times, wave forecasts and wind direction before leaving home, then reassess the water level and wash continuously once at the mark.
• Never rely on a low-water route remaining available: leave well before rising water or spray makes the return hazardous.

Scalby Ness demands proper coastal safety awareness. The rocks are slippery, the ground is uneven and exposed, and waves can sweep apparently sheltered ledges without warning.

• Wear grippy boots or rock-hopping footwear, warm waterproof layers and a properly fitted buoyancy aid; studded soles can be useful on suitable rock but still require careful footing.
• Do not fish beneath unstable cliffs, on wet algae-covered shelves, or anywhere with no obvious high-ground escape route.
• Keep clear of the water’s edge in swell, never turn your back on the sea, and abandon the session if wave height or wash is increasing.
• Fish with a companion where possible, tell someone your intended location and return time, and carry a charged phone in a waterproof case.
• The mark is not suitable for wheelchair access, and it is generally unsuitable for anglers with limited mobility because of the walk, descent and irregular rocks.
• Night fishing adds substantial risk; anyone considering it should know the route well in daylight and use reliable lighting, but should still avoid the venue in any swell.

There are no facilities on the fishing rocks, so anglers should treat the Ness as a self-sufficient session. Scarborough’s North Bay and the Scalby Mills vicinity provide the nearest practical access to parking, refreshments and public amenities, subject to seasonal opening arrangements.

• Bring all drinking water, food, spare terminal tackle, a first-aid kit and a means of taking litter home.
• Public toilets, parking rules and nearby businesses can change, so check current local information before travelling.
• Keep vehicles and valuables secure, and do not leave tackle blocking paths, steps or access points.
• There may be limited phone signal in dips below the cliffs; do not depend on it as your only safety plan.

Success at Scalby Ness usually comes from treating it as a venue to be read rather than simply cast over. Spend time watching the wash, locating cleaner channels between kelp beds and noting where a fish can actually be landed before making the first cast.

• Arrive in daylight on a first visit and use low water to identify gullies, kelp lines, snags and safe retreat routes.
• Carry plenty of inexpensive leads and pre-tied rigs, but retrieve steadily and keep the rod high to reduce losses in the weed.
• Do not overcast automatically: fish often patrol close-in water along the edge of the kelp and wash.
• A landing net with a long handle can be more useful than trying to lift fish onto a high, uneven ledge.
• Respect other users of the coast path and foreshore, keep noise down near nearby homes and wildlife, and take discarded line, bait packaging and hooks away with you.
• If the sea looks marginal, choose a safer harbour wall or beach mark instead; Scalby Ness will still be there on a better day.

There is no basis to describe Scalby Ness as a blanket no-fishing mark, but access restrictions, temporary safety closures and fishery rules can change. Anglers remain responsible for checking current official notices and following national and local rules.

• Observe any signs, fencing, cliff-safety notices, council instructions and landowner restrictions encountered on the approach; do not bypass closures to reach the rocks.
• Follow current UK sea-fisheries rules on minimum sizes, catch limits where applicable, protected species and local byelaws; check the relevant official fisheries authority before retaining fish.
• Return undersized, protected or unwanted fish quickly and carefully, and consider releasing larger breeding fish where practical.
• Do not collect bait, shellfish or other marine life in any way that breaches local restrictions, protected-area rules or private-land permissions.
• Avoid disturbing nesting seabirds and other wildlife, particularly where the cliff and foreshore are signed as sensitive areas.
