Burniston Bay

Burniston Bay is a rugged North Yorkshire rock mark north of Scarborough, best known for rough-ground fishing rather than easy, open-beach casting. It can produce excellent cold-water sport when the sea has some colour, but it is a committing venue with tides, swell and the walk in all demanding respect.

• Expect mixed rock, kelp, gullies and broken ground, with only limited smoother patches depending on the state of the tide.
• It is primarily a bait-and-lure mark for anglers prepared to lose tackle and fish close to structure.
• The bay is most worthwhile for codling and other winter species after an onshore blow, while summer brings a broader selection of wrasse, pollack, mackerel and occasional bass.
• It is not a sensible first sea-fishing venue in rough weather or for anyone unable to manage uneven, steep coastal ground.

The mark lies on the exposed coast below the Burniston area, between Scarborough and the cliffs farther north. Reaching the water generally involves a walk from roadside or village parking and a descent on coastal paths; conditions, path closures and the precise practical access point can change.

• Do not assume that a route shown online remains safe or open: check current public-path information and assess the descent before carrying full fishing gear down.
• Parking is normally away from the shore rather than beside the fishing ledges, so travel light and keep hands free for the descent.

• Codling and cod are most realistic from autumn into winter, especially after a moderate to rough easterly or north-easterly sea has coloured the water.
• Coalfish, pollack and pouting can show around deeper rock edges and kelp-lined gullies.
• Ballan wrasse and smaller cuckoo wrasse are possible in clearer, warmer water over kelp and rough ground.
• Mackerel may be reachable in summer and early autumn when shoals are moving close along the coast.
• Bass are possible in suitable warmer, moving water, particularly around shallow rough ground and any surf, although they should never be treated as guaranteed.
• Dogfish, dabs or other flatfish may appear where there is a small area of cleaner sand or mixed ground, but this is not principally a flatfish beach.

Tackle should be selected for abrasion resistance and for getting fish away from kelp and rock quickly. The most productive approach is usually to fish the features in front of you rather than trying to cast extreme distances.

• For codling, use a robust beachcaster or rock rod, a dependable reel, strong main line and a sensible shock leader where casting weights demand it.

• Float-fished worm, small strips of fish or light lures can produce wrasse and pollack in calm, clear conditions, but only from a stable ledge with a safe escape route.
• Mackerel feathers can work when fish are close, though a lighter single-lure approach is often safer and more manageable on confined rock platforms.

This is an exposed open-coast mark, so sea state matters more than a neat tide rule. A building flood tide often improves access to deeper water and can bring fish closer, but no catch is worth being cut off or washed from a ledge.

• A moderate coloured sea after an easterly or north-easterly blow is often the classic codling scenario, provided the swell has eased enough for the ledges to be safe.
• Calm, clear summer water is generally better for wrasse, pollack, mackerel and lure fishing than for serious rough-weather cod fishing.
• The flood tide can improve depth around many rock marks, while the last of the ebb may reveal useful gullies and clean patches; local ledges vary, so watch the tide before committing.
• Avoid fishing during large swell, when waves are reaching normally dry rock, or when a rising tide will cover the route back.
• Night fishing can be productive for codling and other species, but it substantially increases the risks of navigation, unstable ground and an unseen sea; daylight reconnaissance is strongly recommended.
• Check the marine forecast, swell direction and local tide information, not just the weather forecast for inland Burniston.

Burniston Bay is a physically demanding natural mark rather than an accessible promenade venue. The cliffs, uneven rock and rapid changes in sea conditions make careful preparation essential.

• Wear grippy boots or proper rock-fishing footwear, warm waterproof layers and a buoyancy aid; studded footwear can be useful where appropriate, but take care on hard or slippery surfaces.
• Never fish beneath unstable cliffs or directly under fresh slips, and do not shelter in caves, narrow gullies or at the base of cliffs during a rising tide.
• Tell someone where you are going and when you intend to return, carry a charged phone in a waterproof case, and have a headtorch even if starting in daylight.
• Fish with a companion where possible. If someone enters the water or conditions become dangerous, call emergency services rather than attempting a risky rescue.
• Keep well back from cliff edges, especially in darkness, wind, fog or after rain; erosion can leave edges undercut and unreliable.
• This venue is unsuitable for wheelchair access, difficult for anglers with limited mobility, and generally poor for young children because of the descent, rough terrain and exposure.

The best approach at Burniston Bay is to treat it as a feature-fishing venue and to earn familiarity gradually in safe daylight conditions. A short scouting visit at a low or mid tide can save wasted effort and prevent dangerous assumptions later.

• Learn one safe ledge and its exit route before trying to explore farther along the bay.
• Look for channels between kelp beds, darker water indicating depth, and areas where a little cleaner ground meets rock; these are often more useful than a featureless long cast.
• In winter, fresh bait and a controlled presentation near rough ground usually matter more than elaborate rigs.
• In clear summer conditions, travel light with a lure rod or float outfit and be prepared to move between safe positions rather than waiting for fish to come to one spot.
• Keep catches only when you genuinely intend to use them, and return undersized, unwanted or out-of-season fish carefully.
• If the sea looks too rough for the ledge, choose a more sheltered local venue instead; the North Yorkshire coast offers no shortage of days when restraint is the best tactic.

There is no confirmed blanket prohibition on recreational sea angling at Burniston Bay, but access and fishing can be affected by local land management, temporary path closures, conservation measures and site-specific signage. Anglers remain responsible for checking the rules that apply on the day.

• Obey all signs relating to access, cliff safety, private land, nesting birds, dogs, parking and temporary closures, even where older fishing reports suggest a route is available.
