Fosdyke Bridge

Fosdyke Bridge is a tidal River Welland mark on the Lincolnshire side of The Wash, fished mainly for estuary species rather than as an open-beach venue. It can produce enjoyable fishing when there is enough coloured, moving water, but it is a working tidal river with limited room and access that must be treated carefully.

The mark is centred on the River Welland at Fosdyke Bridge, near the A17 crossing and the village of Fosdyke. Anglers normally fish accessible lengths of bank away from the carriageway and bridge structure; do not assume that every apparently open bank is public or available to fish.

Flounder are the principal target and are the most dependable reason to fish Fosdyke Bridge, especially when fish are moving through the estuary. Seasonal catches can include other Wash-linked species, but expectations should be modest compared with a purpose-made beach mark.

Simple estuary tactics are generally more effective here than heavy-distance beach gear. Fish baits hard on, or only slightly off, the bottom and keep the rig tidy so it is less likely to collect weed and debris.

Tide state, freshwater flow and water colour have a major influence at Fosdyke Bridge. The River Welland can run hard around the tide, and periods of heavy rainfall can make the water very coloured and carry substantial debris.

This is not a casual, all-abilities promenade mark: banks may be steep, muddy, uneven and slippery, while tidal water can rise quickly. The bridge and its approaches are close to a busy main road, so safe parking and a route to the bank are as important as the fishing.

Fosdyke is a small village rather than a developed fishing complex, so anglers should arrive self-sufficient. Facilities and lawful parking arrangements can change, particularly around pubs, private businesses and bridge approaches.

A short reconnaissance visit in daylight is worthwhile before attempting an evening or winter session. The most successful approach is usually to fish the tide rather than simply casting as far as possible.

There is no clear basis to describe Fosdyke Bridge as universally closed to fishing, but access and fishing rights on tidal-river banks are not automatically public. Check the exact bank, current signs and any local owner, club or authority requirements before setting up.
