Tabs Head

Tabs Head is a relatively quiet, open-beach sea-fishing mark on the Lincolnshire coast, generally regarded as being in the Mablethorpe–Theddlethorpe stretch. It is a mobile surf venue rather than a fixed harbour or pier mark, so the productive gullies, sandbars and casting distances can change markedly after rough weather.

• Expect a broad, sandy foreshore with shallow-to-moderate surf water, occasional deeper runnels and changing tidal channels.
• It can reward anglers prepared to walk, watch the sea and fish the water in front of them rather than relying on one permanent feature.
• The mark is most often fished for the usual East Coast mixed-bag species, with its better spells normally linked to season, tide and sea state.

Tabs Head is reached from the Lincolnshire coastal road network via local beach access points in the Mablethorpe and Theddlethorpe area; the precise entry used by anglers can vary with parking availability and coastal-management works. Treat the name as a local angling reference rather than assuming there is a prominent signed headland or a single formal fishing platform.

• Use only public roads, signed car parks and established pedestrian access routes to the beach.
• Be prepared for a walk over soft sand, particularly if parking is set back behind the sea bank or dunes.
• Avoid crossing dunes, fenced land, restored habitat and private tracks simply to shorten the approach.
• At low water the distance to the sea can be considerable, while the return route can be cut off surprisingly quickly on a flooding tide.
• Check the condition of any paths, ramps and car parks before travelling, as coastal erosion and storm damage can alter access.

Tabs Head can produce a classic Lincolnshire surf-fishing mixed bag, with the likely catch changing substantially between summer and the colder months. Fish the venue with realistic expectations: catches can be excellent in the right tide and coloured water, but quiet sessions are also normal on this exposed coast.

• Autumn and winter targets include whiting, dab, flounder and the chance of codling when there is a useful sea running.
• Smaller whiting, dabs and flatties provide the most consistent sport on many settled-water sessions.
• Summer fishing may bring bass, smooth-hound, dogfish, school rays and occasional better flatfish, depending on local conditions.
• Plaice can appear where cleaner patches and suitable shell or mixed ground are present, but they are not guaranteed from every stretch of beach.
• Eel, small bass and other inshore visitors are possible around the warmer months, especially close to gullies and coloured-water edges.
• Species availability is seasonal and local; recent reports from nearby Lincolnshire beaches are more useful than old catch lists.

A simple surf-fishing approach works best at Tabs Head, but adjust tackle to the depth, weed level and the way the tide is moving. Spend time locating a darker gully, a channel between sandbars, a seam of coloured water or a calmer depression rather than casting blindly as far as possible.

• For whiting, dabs and flounder, use a two-hook clipped rig or flapper with reasonably small hooks and baits such as lugworm, ragworm, mackerel, squid or tipped cocktail baits.
• For codling and bigger fish in colder, rougher conditions, fish a robust clipped-down pulley or pennel-style rig with larger worm, crab, mussel or squid-based baits.
• For bass, concentrate on the edges of surf gutters and incoming water with fresh peeler crab, ragworm or sizeable worm baits; a long cast is not always necessary.
• Use grip leads when the tide is pulling, but reduce lead grip in calmer water if a bait needs to move naturally.
• Carry spare rigs and use plain, practical terminal tackle: much of the beach is clean sand, although storm-thrown debris, old groyne material and isolated rough patches can occur.
• A long beachcaster is useful for reaching channels, but short-to-medium casts into close gutters often take fish, particularly around the flood.

Tabs Head is usually at its most interesting when a flooding tide covers the gutters and pushes fish within casting range. The best exact state of tide is not fixed because the beach profile moves, but many anglers favour fishing from the latter part of the flood through high water and into the early ebb.

• Fish a freshening or recently coloured sea for better cold-weather codling prospects; a completely flat, clear sea is often less productive for larger fish.
• Moderate surf can improve the fishing by stirring food from the sand, but strong onshore weather can make casting, holding bottom and safe access difficult.
• Neap tides may offer easier fishing and less tidal drag, while bigger springs can expose more beach and make the sea retreat or return rapidly.
• On calm, clear summer days, early morning, dusk and darkness generally offer better chances than the brightest part of the day.
• Check a current local tide table and weather forecast before setting out, and reassess the sea state on arrival rather than relying on a report from another day.
• Do not set up in a low-water channel that will fill behind you on the flood.

This is an exposed natural beach, not a sheltered or fully accessible promenade mark. The main hazards are a rapidly advancing tide, soft or uneven sand, surf conditions, darkness and changing beach levels.

• Check tide times before arrival and leave a generous margin to walk back; never assume that the route used at low water will remain passable.
• Fish with a companion where possible, especially after dark or in rough weather, and tell someone where you are going.
• Wear suitable waterproof footwear and warm, windproof clothing; waders can be hazardous in surf or deep channels and should be used with great caution.
• Keep well clear of unstable dune faces, eroded banks, sea-defence structures and any closed or damaged access points.
• Use a headtorch after dark, keep a charged phone in a waterproof case and carry a basic first-aid kit.
• Soft sand and the potentially long walk mean the mark may be difficult for anglers with limited mobility; conditions and access surfaces should be checked locally before making a special journey.
• Take all litter, line and bait packaging home, as discarded tackle is a serious hazard to coastal wildlife.

Facilities immediately at the fishing area should not be assumed, as Tabs Head is primarily a beach mark rather than a serviced angling venue. Stock up before leaving the larger nearby coastal settlements.

• Parking arrangements vary by access point and may be limited, seasonal or affected by coastal works.
• Toilets, food outlets, tackle supplies and public shelters are more likely to be found in nearby towns than on the beach itself.
• Bring sufficient bait, drinking water, spare terminal tackle, lighting and warm clothing rather than expecting shops close to the mark.
• Do not obstruct gates, agricultural entrances, emergency routes or narrow lanes when parking.
• Check any parking notices carefully, including restrictions that may apply overnight or during busy holiday periods.

The most successful Tabs Head sessions usually come from reading the beach on the day. A short walk at low or mid tide can reveal gutters and bar breaks that are invisible once the water is up.

• Look for darker water, a line of foam travelling seaward, a break in a sandbar or a smooth-looking channel: these features can concentrate fish and food.
• Set up above the expected high-water line, but keep the sea in view at all times and move early if the flood is reaching your kit.
• In rough weather, a shorter cast into the first or second gutter can outfish a heroic cast over the productive water.
• Carry a range of bait sizes: small, neat worm baits for dabs and whiting, with larger cocktails ready if codling or rays are likely.
• If weed is arriving in quantity, use streamlined clipped rigs, change leads and rigs promptly, and consider moving rather than repeatedly fishing a fouled line.
• Respect other beach users and give surfcasters plenty of room; lead and casting safety matter on popular stretches of coast.
• Recent reports from local tackle shops and responsible local angling groups can help identify whether fish are holding on this beach or elsewhere along the coast.

There is no clear basis to state that sea angling at Tabs Head is universally prohibited, but access and activity can be restricted locally by landowners, coastal-management works, conservation measures, emergency closures or posted beach rules. Anglers should treat signs on site and instructions from authorised staff as definitive.

• Check all car-park notices, beach signage and temporary closure boards before fishing.
• Do not enter signed protected areas, fenced dunes, nesting habitat or areas closed for coastal works.
• Observe current national rules on minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and any seasonal restrictions; these can change, so verify them through official fisheries and conservation sources before retaining fish.
• Return undersized, protected or unwanted fish promptly and carefully, and retain only fish that are legal and genuinely intended for the table.
• Follow local rules on dogs, vehicles, fires, overnight parking and public access where applicable.
• If a sign, ranger or land manager says fishing is not permitted from a particular access point or area, use an alternative lawful access point rather than assuming the whole beach is open.
