Friskney Flats

Friskney Flats is a classic Lincolnshire open-beach and estuary-flat mark: huge, shallow sands, a very big tidal range and fishing that can improve markedly once deeper water begins to cover the flats. It is a mobile venue rather than a ‘cast to one feature’ beach, so the best sessions come from finding a gutter, run-off or slightly deeper coloured water rather than standing on apparently identical sand.

• The mark is generally regarded as a tidal beach-fishing venue, with the flood tide often more productive than the long low-water period.
• It can produce mixed East Coast fishing, especially whiting, dabs, flounder, dogfish and seasonal codling, with bass, rays and smooth-hounds possible at the right time.
• Expectations should be realistic: catches can be tide-, weather- and bait-dependent, and the shallow water does not suit every species on every tide.

Friskney Flats lies on the Lincolnshire coast near Friskney and the Wolla Bank/Friskney beach area, south of Skegness. Access is normally made from the public coastal approaches and then on foot across the beach; the exact usable line can alter with erosion, sand movement and the state of the tide.

• Use established public paths, beach entrances and any signed parking areas rather than assuming that tracks across fields, dunes or caravan-park land are public.
• The walk to fishable water can be substantial, particularly around low tide, because the sea retreats a very long way across the flats.
• Do not take vehicles onto the beach, saltmarsh or soft sand unless a route is explicitly authorised; vehicles can become stuck quickly and can damage sensitive habitat.
• Before travelling, check recent local reports or inspect the beach from a safe position, as gullies and access conditions can change after storms.

Friskney Flats is primarily a mixed-fish venue, with the likely target changing through the year and with water temperature. Fish often use the gullies and edges of channels as the tide floods rather than roaming evenly across the exposed sand.

• Autumn and winter: whiting, dabs, flounder and occasional codling are the usual headline possibilities, with dogfish also possible in suitable conditions.
• Spring and summer: bass can show around moving water and bait concentrations; smooth-hounds and rays may be possible when warmer water reaches the coast.
• Flatfish are a realistic target for anglers prepared to use smaller baits and fish the cleaner, steadier parts of the tide.
• Larger fish are never guaranteed here; match tackle and small-bait fishing can be far more productive than waiting solely for a specimen.

A straightforward beach ledgering approach covers most situations, but rigs should be selected for tidal flow and the amount of weed present. Keep moving mentally as well as physically: a cast beside a visible gutter or into coloured, moving water is usually preferable to a blind cast over featureless sand.

• Use clipped-down pulley, pennel or two-hook rigs when casting distance and a secure presentation are needed; carry plain flowing or lighter flatfish rigs for quieter water.
• Fresh or well-kept lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab, squid, mackerel strip and fish baits all have a place, with worm-and-fish cocktails useful when targeting whiting or codling.
• For dabs and flounder, try smaller worm baits, short snoods and restrained bait sizes rather than oversized winter baits.
• Use enough lead to hold bottom safely in the run. A grip lead may be necessary, but retrieve with care if the rig is settling into soft sand or catching debris.
• Start fishing before the flood reaches the preferred gutter and remain alert to the water coming in behind or beside you; do not become committed to one low-tide position.

The defining feature of Friskney Flats is the tide. The sea can advance rapidly over shallow ground, while channels, draining water and uneven sand make the area very different from a compact, steeply shelving beach.

• Many anglers favour the flooding tide and the first part of the ebb, especially where a channel or depression gives fish a route across the flats.
• Low water can reveal useful features, but it can also leave a long and potentially hazardous walk over soft, wet ground; treat reconnaissance and fishing as separate decisions.
• A moderate onshore breeze can colour the water and improve fish confidence, though strong easterly weather can make the open beach unpleasant or unsafe.
• Northerly or stormy conditions can deposit weed and alter the shape of gutters, making tackle choice and casting lanes more difficult.
• Check a reliable local tide forecast and weather forecast on the day. Do not rely on a generic tide-time app alone when deciding how long it is safe to stay on the sand.

This is not a forgiving mark for anyone who is unfamiliar with tidal flats. The principal hazards are fast-advancing water, soft mud or sand, hidden channels, darkness and a long return walk rather than steep cliffs or rocks.

• Fish with a companion where possible, tell someone where you are going and keep a fully charged phone in a waterproof pouch.
• Plan to be walking back well before the tide can cut off the route; never cross a channel once it is filling or attempt to outrun the sea.
• Avoid walking far onto unfamiliar wet flats, particularly alone, after dark or in poor visibility. Areas that look firm can become soft without warning.
• Wear suitable boots or waders with secure footing, carry a headtorch, and keep warm and dry clothing available for exposed winter sessions.
• The beach approach and soft, uneven sand make this a difficult venue for wheelchairs, pushchairs and anglers with limited mobility. Facilities and firm all-weather access should not be assumed.

Facilities immediately at the fishing area are limited, and the beach should be treated as a self-sufficient venue. Obtain bait, food, fuel and any tackle items before heading to the coast, especially for an evening or winter session.

• Parking availability, charges and opening arrangements can change, so follow the signs at the access point rather than relying on old reports.
• Public toilets, lighting, shelter, tackle shops and refreshments may be some distance from the actual fishing ground.
• Take drinking water, a first-aid kit, spare batteries, a litter bag and enough food for the planned tide.
• Keep access points clear for other beach users and emergency vehicles, and do not leave valuables visible in parked vehicles.

The productive part of Friskney Flats is often a small piece of water rather than the whole horizon. Arriving early enough to watch the beach drain, identify a gutter and then fish its flood can be more valuable than simply casting as far as possible.

• Look for darker water, rippled edges, foam lines, shell patches, run-offs and birds feeding along a channel; these can indicate food and depth.
• If bites are slow, vary bait size and cast placement before assuming the fish are out of range. A shorter cast into a gutter can beat a maximum-distance cast.
• Carry a means of cleaning hands and gear: the flats can be muddy, and wet sand gets into reels, rod rests and boxes quickly.
• Keep all line, bait packaging and discarded tackle off the beach. Lost line is a serious hazard to birds and other wildlife.
• Respect other users of this broad coast, including walkers, dog owners, birdwatchers and wildfowlers where present; give people and wildlife plenty of room.

There is no clear basis to state that sea fishing is universally prohibited at Friskney Flats, but access and activities can be restricted locally by landowners, conservation controls, temporary notices or safety conditions. Anglers must follow all signage at the point of entry and current national and local fisheries rules.

• Check official notices for any local access restrictions, protected-area conditions, seasonal wildlife measures or restrictions on parking and beach driving.
• Check current Government guidance for minimum sizes, catch limits, retained species rules and any recreational sea-angling requirements before keeping fish.
• Consult the relevant Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority for current local byelaws, including rules that may affect bait collection, shellfish, nets or particular species.
• Return undersized, protected or unwanted fish carefully, and do not remove bait or shellfish from areas where collection is prohibited or signed against.
• If a sign, warden, landowner or official notice says access or fishing is not permitted at a particular entrance or section, use another lawful access point or do not fish there.
