Gibraltar Point

Gibraltar Point is a broad, open Lincolnshire east-coast beach mark on the edge of the Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve, south of Skegness. It is principally a bait-fishing venue, with the attraction of changing gutters, shallow surf and a realistic chance of mixed seasonal fishing rather than a fixed deep-water feature.

• Expect a mobile beach environment: productive channels can fill, shift or disappear after strong easterlies and winter weather.
• It can fish well for flatfish and whiting, with codling possible in the colder part of the year when coloured water and sea movement coincide.
• The mark is exposed, peaceful and scenic, but it is not a place for treating the reserve or beach as a casual, unrestricted recreation area.

The fishing is generally from the open foreshore beside Gibraltar Point, reached on foot from the reserve side rather than by driving onto the beach. Access routes, parking arrangements and the most suitable fishing sections can vary with reserve management, weather and the state of the paths.

• Gibraltar Point lies immediately south of Skegness and is approached through the reserve access roads and public parking areas.
• Be prepared for a walk over sand and along marked paths; the distance to a fishable gutter can be substantial, particularly around low water.
• Use only public, signed routes to the beach and keep clear of fenced dunes, saltmarsh and any areas closed for conservation.
• A trolley is useful for carrying a tripod, bait and shelter, although soft sand can make wheeled access awkward.

The usual quarry is typical shallow-water Lincolnshire surf species, with catches strongly governed by season, water colour, bait and tide. It is a sensible venue for anglers happy to fish for mixed bags rather than targeting only one specimen species.

• Flounder are a key prospect, especially where a clean sandy run meets a slightly darker, food-bearing gutter.
• Whiting are regular in the colder months and can provide the most dependable after-dark sport.
• Codling may show when there is a proper sea running, especially if the water has taken on colour after onshore weather.
• Bass can occur in warmer conditions, particularly around surf, small channels and concentrations of sandeels or other prey.
• Dab, sole, plaice, small rays, dogfish and occasional other summer visitors are all possible, though none should be assumed on every trip.
• Small school fish and undersize fish are common at times; handle them carefully and return them promptly.

A straightforward beach ledger approach is the most practical method at Gibraltar Point, with rigs chosen to match the surf and the species expected. Distance casting can help on a very shallow ebb, but accurate fishing into a close gutter is often more valuable than casting flat out.

• Use a sturdy beachcaster, fixed-spool or multiplier reel, and enough grip lead to hold bottom in the prevailing tide and surf.
• A two-hook clipped rig, flapper or flowing trace covers general flatfish and whiting fishing; keep hook patterns and bait size sensible for the likely catch.
• For codling or rougher weather, fish a stronger pulley-style rig or similar robust single-hook arrangement with a larger bait.
• Lugworm, ragworm, fresh or frozen crab, mussel, squid and fish strips all have their moments; worm-and-squid cocktails are useful general baits in coloured water.
• For flounder and dab, smaller worm baits on lighter traces can outperform oversized winter cod baits.
• Fish baits cleanly and replace washed-out offerings regularly, as the surf can strip soft bait quickly.

This is a tide-and-weather-dependent mark: the beach is shallow, and the best water is usually where the tide pushes through a visible gutter or depression. A little colour and movement often improve sport, while prolonged flat, clear conditions can make the venue slow.

• The flood and the period around high water are usually the most convenient times to find fishable depth close enough to shore.
• On a low ebb, walk only where safe and legal to identify gullies, scoured channels and banks for the next flood rather than simply casting at featureless water.
• Moderate onshore or north-easterly influence can stir food and colour the sea, but strong easterly conditions can make the beach dangerous and unfishable.
• Smaller to medium tides are often easier to manage for general fishing, while larger tides can create stronger movement and more difficult footing.
• Evening, darkness and the first part of a flood are worth prioritising for whiting and winter species, subject to safe access and a clear exit plan.

Gibraltar Point is exposed to wind, weather and a rapidly changing shoreline, so it deserves proper coastal planning rather than a last-minute session. The reserve setting also means anglers should expect walking and should not rely on vehicle access close to the water.

• Check tide times, weather, wind direction and any coastal warnings before setting out; do not allow a rising tide to cut off your return route.
• Avoid fishing close to steep or undercut sand faces, deep tidal runnels and visibly fast-flowing channels.
• Wear suitable footwear for soft, wet sand and carry a headtorch, spare batteries, warm waterproof clothing and a charged phone for night sessions.
• Tell somebody where you are going if fishing alone, and leave early if fog, lightning, a severe onshore wind or worsening surf develops.
• Beach access is uneven and can involve long stretches of soft sand, so this is not an especially straightforward mark for anglers with limited mobility.
• Keep lights, noise and movement to a minimum near dunes and bird roosting areas, particularly after dark.

Reserve facilities are available nearer the main visitor area, but anglers should regard the foreshore as a self-sufficient fishing venue. Opening hours, parking arrangements and available services can change, particularly outside the main visitor season.

• Public parking is normally associated with the reserve access area rather than the fishing beach itself; observe posted parking terms.
• Toilets, visitor information and refreshments may be available around the visitor facilities when open, but do not depend on them for an early or late fishing session.
• Skegness is the nearest main source of tackle, bait, food, fuel and accommodation.
• Take all litter, discarded line, bait packaging and fish waste home; bins near visitor areas are not a substitute for leaving the beach clean.

The best local approach is to spend time reading the beach rather than committing automatically to the first accessible stretch of sand. A fresh gutter, a darker tongue of water or a defined line of surf is usually a better bet than a long cast over a featureless bank.

• Arrive in daylight where possible and watch the tide expose the beach; note where water continues to drain or where waves break differently.
• Bring more than one bait, as worm baits may suit flatfish while crab, squid or larger cocktails can be better if codling are the aim.
• Do not overfeed crabs with exposed bait: secure softer baits with elastic and check them frequently.
• A high tripod keeps line clear of the wash and makes bite detection easier in a rolling surf.
• Avoid bait digging, trampling or shortcutting through sensitive reserve habitat; buy bait locally or collect it only where it is expressly permitted.
• If the sea is too rough to hold bottom safely, move elsewhere or call it off rather than trying to overpower the conditions.

Gibraltar Point is within a nationally important nature-reserve landscape, so conservation controls, seasonal restrictions and signed exclusions must take priority over fishing plans. Sea angling should not be assumed to be permitted everywhere within the wider reserve simply because the foreshore is publicly accessible.

• Check current Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve and Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust information, along with signs at the access point, before fishing.
• Obey all temporary closures, nesting-bird restrictions, access-path rules, parking conditions and instructions from reserve staff or wardens.
• Do not enter dunes, saltmarsh, fenced areas or signed wildlife-sensitive sections, and keep dogs under the controls required by the reserve.
• Follow current national and local fisheries rules for minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and bass measures; these rules can change, so verify them from official sources before retaining fish.
• Return protected, prohibited or unwanted fish carefully, and never leave line, hooks or bait waste where wildlife can encounter it.
• Recreational sea angling in England does not normally require the freshwater rod licence, but this does not override reserve byelaws, fishery rules or any local restriction.
