Winthorpe Beach

Winthorpe Beach is a broad, shallow Lincolnshire sand-and-surf mark on the northern side of Skegness, best regarded as a mobile beach-fishing venue rather than a deep-water specimen mark. It can produce enjoyable mixed fishing, particularly when a bit of colour and movement are present in the sea.

• The beach is most often fished for flatfish, school bass, whiting and seasonal codling, with the exact catch depending heavily on time of year and sea state.
• It is a forgiving venue for anglers who can cast a bait beyond the first shallow surf, but it can be very quiet in clear, calm summer conditions.
• The ground is predominantly sand, although gullies, drainage runs and occasional rougher patches are worth seeking out as the tide exposes the beach.

The mark lies on the Lincolnshire coast at Winthorpe, immediately north of central Skegness and its main resort frontage. Access is generally from the seafront, promenade approaches and public beach entrances, with the final approach commonly involving a walk across soft sand.

• Choose a recognised public beach access rather than crossing dunes, private land or fenced coastal-defence works.
• Parking, paths and beach entrances are more plentiful closer to Skegness, but can be busy in holiday periods; allow time to carry tackle to a quieter stretch.
• A short walk away from the busiest promenade areas is usually worthwhile for both casting room and fewer interruptions from beach users.
• On a large ebb tide the water can retreat a considerable distance, so inspect the route and avoid setting up where the returning tide may cut off an easy exit.

Winthorpe is principally a mixed, shallow-water surf venue, with species changing through the seasons and according to water clarity. Freshly coloured water after onshore weather is often more productive than a settled, gin-clear sea.

• Spring and summer: flounder, plaice, dab, school bass and occasional smooth-hound or ray are possible, although neither hounds nor rays should be treated as guaranteed catches.
• Autumn: whiting, dabs, flounder, bass and codling are the main realistic targets, with autumn and early-winter rough weather often improving the codling chance.
• Winter: whiting, dabs, flounder and occasional codling are the usual returns; fishing can be slow during prolonged cold, clear and calm spells.
• Small fish are common on this coast, so use sensible hooks and return undersized fish carefully and promptly.

A simple two-rod beach approach covers most situations at Winthorpe: one bait fished at moderate range and another altered in distance until fish are located. The key is to find a channel, a slightly deeper patch or the edge of a surf line rather than blindly casting as far as possible.

• Use a beachcaster or continental-style surf rod with a fixed-spool or multiplier reel, matched to a grip lead capable of holding in moving water.
• For flatfish, try a clipped two-hook flapper, flowing trace or small pennel arrangement baited with ragworm, lugworm, maddies or a worm-and-squid cocktail.
• For whiting and codling, fish worm, squid, mackerel strip or mixed baits on a two-hook rig or pennel; larger, well-presented baits can reduce nuisance bites.
• For bass, concentrate on moving water, surf and any visible drain or gully, using fresh ragworm, lugworm, crab when available, or a fish-and-worm bait.
• Cast at several ranges before committing: fish may be in the near surf, but on a flat low-water beach a longer cast can sometimes reach the more useful water.

The flood tide is generally the most convenient and productive period because it brings fish over the extensive shallow sands. Many anglers favour the final part of the flood and the first part of the ebb, but conditions matter more than a single rule.

• Fish a rising tide where practical, arriving early enough to identify gutters, firmer sand and drainage channels at lower water.
• Moderate onshore or cross-onshore winds can put welcome colour into the water and create a better surf for bass, whiting and codling.
• Very strong onshore winds can make casting, bait presentation and safe positioning difficult; exposed beaches can become uncomfortable quickly.
• Calm, clear spells can still produce flatfish, especially around a defined gully, but expectations for codling and larger fish should be lower.
• Check a current local tide table and weather forecast before travelling, as wind direction and sea state can alter the mark dramatically.

This is an open tidal beach with soft sand, changing channels and an exposed North Sea frontage, so tide awareness is essential. It is not automatically unsuitable for less mobile anglers, but the distance over sand and the condition of beach access points can be significant barriers.

• Do not drive onto the beach or attempt to cross wet, soft or isolated sand flats; use established pedestrian routes.
• Keep clear of the advancing tide, particularly around drains and channels, and leave before your route back becomes narrow or cut off.
• Wear warm, waterproof clothing and footwear with good grip; even a mild day can become cold and windy after dark.
• Fish with a headtorch after dark, keep tackle and rods visible to other beach users, and avoid casting anywhere people may enter the casting zone.
• Check access surfaces, ramp gradients and available parking before a visit if using a trolley, wheelchair or other mobility aid; sand conditions vary greatly.

Winthorpe benefits from being close to Skegness, where food, tackle supplies, accommodation and public amenities are easier to find than at many isolated Lincolnshire marks. Facilities immediately beside a chosen fishing pitch should not be assumed, particularly away from the main resort frontage.

• Shops, cafés, toilets and other visitor services are generally more readily available towards Skegness and the developed seafront.
• Carry water, bait, spare tackle and a rubbish bag to the beach rather than relying on nearby facilities.
• Public parking and toilets may have opening times, charges or seasonal arrangements, so check locally before an early-morning or night session.
• A beach trolley can help on firm access paths, but may be hard work once it reaches loose, dry sand.

The most successful approach at Winthorpe is to treat the beach as a changing landscape and move or recast when the water gives no sign of fish. A little observation at low water can be more valuable than simply adding distance to every cast.

• Look for darker water, a break in the surf, a depression running seaward, shellier sand or a small run-off; these features can hold feeding fish.
• Avoid the busiest family areas where possible, especially in daytime during the holiday season, and give walkers, dogs and bathers ample space.
• Fresh local bait is a major advantage on the Lincolnshire coast; worm baits are dependable, while crab can be useful for summer bass when it is legally and responsibly obtained.
• If short bites dominate, reduce bait size or use smaller hooks for dabs, flounder and whiting rather than waiting solely for a larger fish.
• Take all line, bait packaging and discarded tackle home, and report any lost line around birds or wildlife where it can be safely recovered.

There is no clear basis for treating Winthorpe Beach as universally closed to sea angling, but beach access and fishing space can be restricted by local management, events, safety operations or temporary notices. Read the signs at the specific entrance used on the day and comply with any instruction from authorised staff.

• Check East Lindsey District Council, local beach-management notices and on-site signage for seasonal controls, event exclusions, access closures, dog restrictions and any limits around promenades or bathing areas.
• Do not fish within marked swimming, water-sports, lifeguard or safety zones, and do not cast across public access routes.
• Follow current national fisheries rules on minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and any changing bass measures; consult official government guidance rather than relying on old social-media posts.
• Obtain bait only lawfully and respect local restrictions on digging, collecting shellfish or accessing dunes and protected habitat.
• If a sign is unclear, choose another open section of beach or seek clarification from the relevant council, land manager or beach staff before fishing.
