Ingoldmells Beach

Ingoldmells Beach is a broad, open Lincolnshire sand beach with a classic East Coast surf-fishing profile: shallow water over sandbanks, mobile gullies and occasional deeper cuts. It can produce reliable mixed bags when conditions and tide line up, although it is not a consistently deep-water venue and rewards mobility and careful reading of the beach.

• Best regarded as a beach-casting mark rather than a rock, harbour or pier venue.
• The fishing is often most worthwhile outside the busiest holiday periods, particularly in autumn and winter.
• Expect the ground to alter after strong weather; a productive gutter on one visit may be filled in or moved on the next.
• Fish can be at very different ranges, so a long cast is useful but not automatically the answer.

The mark lies on the sandy Lincolnshire coast at the resort of Ingoldmells, between the better-known Skegness frontage to the south and Chapel St Leonards to the north. Access is generally straightforward from the seafront and nearby resort roads, but the most crowded central sections are rarely pleasant places to fish in daytime during the holiday season.

• Use established public beach access points and avoid obstructing promenades, paths, businesses or holidaymakers.
• Parking is available around the resort, much of it privately operated or subject to local conditions; check signs, charges and closing times before leaving a vehicle.
• A short walk away from the busiest amusements and caravan-park frontage usually gives more casting room and a quieter session.
• The upper beach is generally firm enough for walking, but the distance to the water can become substantial on a big ebb tide.

Ingoldmells is principally a mixed flat-sand venue, with species changing markedly through the year, sea temperature and water clarity. Smaller flatfish and whiting are among the more regular expectations, while better fish tend to be linked to favourable weather, bait movement and defined channels.

• Autumn and winter can produce whiting, dabs, flounder and the chance of codling, especially when there is some colour and movement in the sea.
• Spring and summer may bring bass, flounder, dabs, plaice and occasional sole, with eel and small ray possibilities in suitable conditions.
• Small fish, including undersized whiting and flatfish, are common enough that sensible hook size and prompt, careful release matter.
• Do not rely on any species being present on a given tide: this coastline can be highly weather-dependent.

A conventional beach-casting setup is the practical choice, with rigs and lead weight matched to the day’s tide, weed and surf. Start by locating a gutter, depression or change in sand texture at low water, then cover both the near water and the far edge of the feature as the tide returns.

• Use a grip lead when the flow requires it; a rolling lead will quickly pull a bait out of a productive channel.
• Two-hook flapper or clipped rigs are useful for dabs, whiting and general mixed fishing, while a simple pulley or flowing presentation suits larger baits and the chance of bass or codling.
• Lugworm, ragworm, crab, squid and mackerel are useful bait options; fresh worm or crab-based baits are often good starting points for the better fish.
• In calm, clear conditions, scale down hook size and bait bulk for flatfish; in coloured, rougher water, use a more substantial and scent-heavy bait.
• Keep casts deliberate rather than simply casting as far as possible: the closest gully can be the best line of the tide.

The beach is strongly shaped by tide and weather, and a low-water look is one of the most useful pieces of preparation an angler can make. Fish commonly move with the flooding water, but the exact productive stage depends on where the gullies lie and how much water is moving.

• A session covering the latter part of the flood and high water is a sound general plan, particularly where a channel reaches close to the upper beach.
• The ebb can also fish well where water drains through a defined gutter, but do not allow the retreating tide to leave you isolated on sandbanks.
• A modest onshore breeze and slightly coloured water can improve confidence for bass, whiting and codling; severe surf, however, can make holding bottom and detecting bites difficult.
• Very calm, clear summer conditions can favour lighter flatfish tactics, particularly around settled water and gentle tidal flow.
• Check a current official tide table and weather forecast before travelling, as tidal range, wind direction and sea state make a major difference here.

This is an open tidal beach rather than a sheltered fishing platform, so sea awareness is essential. The resort setting makes access easier than at many isolated Lincolnshire marks, but soft sand, dark exits and rapidly changing water still require sensible planning.

• Fish with the tide in mind and keep a clear, known route back to the upper beach; never assume a sandbar will remain connected as water rises.
• Avoid wading into unknown channels, especially in surf, darkness or coloured water; gullies can be deeper and faster-running than they appear.
• Check wind, swell and any flood or severe-weather warnings before setting out, and leave if conditions become unsafe.
• Use a headtorch after dark, tell someone where you are going, carry a charged phone and keep clear of waves while casting.
• The beach approach may be manageable for some users with limited mobility, but soft sand and the long low-tide walk can be difficult; assess the particular access point and tide state beforehand.
• Give swimmers, families, dog walkers and other beach users plenty of room, and do not cast across occupied water.

Ingoldmells is a busy holiday resort, so food outlets, shops and seasonal visitor facilities are generally closer than at many natural beaches. Their availability, hours and the condition of public conveniences can vary considerably with season and time of day.

• Tackle supplies may be available in the wider resort area, but bring essential bait, rigs, water and spare tackle rather than depending on late opening.
• Parking, toilets and refreshments are most likely around the developed seafront, though some facilities may be seasonal or chargeable.
• Keep litter, discarded line and bait packaging with you; the wide beach can look forgiving, but waste is hazardous to wildlife, dogs and beach users.
• In peak season, allow extra time for traffic, parking and walking gear from the car to a suitably quiet stretch of beach.

The most useful local skill at Ingoldmells is learning to read the sand rather than expecting one fixed casting distance or permanent hotspot. Arrive around low water when practical, walk the likely area and look for gullies, darker wet sand, rip lines and places where the retreating water concentrates.

• Fish a stretch rather than becoming committed to the first gap in the groynes or first visible channel; subtle changes in depth can matter.
• If bites are scarce, alter range before constantly changing bait: one rod close and one farther out is a sensible way to search.
• Keep tackle compact and secure, as wind-blown sand and a rising tide can quickly make a spread-out camp awkward.
• Night fishing can be productive and quieter, but only if you have checked the exit, tide and beach layout in daylight.
• After rough weather, revisit with an open mind: newly cut gullies can create a short-lived opportunity, while previous features may have vanished.

There is no general indication that sea angling is permanently prohibited along the whole of Ingoldmells Beach, but local controls can apply to particular access points, promenades, seasonal bathing areas, events and privately managed frontage. Anglers should treat current on-site notices and directions from authorised staff as definitive.

• Check local council notices, beach signage and any temporary restrictions before fishing, especially in the main summer visitor season.
• Keep well clear of signed bathing, watersports or event zones, and do not cast where the public is using the water.
• Observe national and local rules on minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and shellfish collection; verify current requirements through official fisheries sources rather than relying on old tackle-shop advice.
• Return fish that are not legally retainable or that you do not genuinely need, and release undersized fish quickly and carefully.
• Obtain permission where access crosses private land or private holiday-park property, even where the foreshore itself appears open.
