Cut End

Cut End is a tidal, estuarine sea-fishing area associated with the lower Boston Haven/River Witham system on the Lincolnshire side of The Wash. It is a working-waterway and mudflat mark rather than a conventional beach, and it can fish well for mixed estuary species when tide, water colour and bait movement line up.

• Expect a practical, mobile approach: the productive water is often a channel edge, creek mouth or tidal run rather than a fixed casting distance.
• It is best regarded as a specialist local mark for anglers comfortable with strong tides, soft ground and changing access conditions.
• Results can be very tide-dependent; a quiet-looking bank can become fishable quickly once the flood brings depth and coloured water in.

The name Cut End is generally used for the tidal banks and approaches around the seaward lower reaches of Boston Haven/Witham, rather than for a single formal angling platform. Exact parking places, footpaths and fishable bank sections can change with drainage, flood-defence and port works.

• Approach only from legitimate public roads, rights of way or clearly permitted bank access; do not assume that a track beside the water is public.
• Keep clear of farm entrances, drainage assets, flood gates, private land and any operational port or industrial areas.
• Travel light enough to move if the tide alters the available bank, but do not take shortcuts across saltmarsh, mud or unmade ground.
• Check the intended access on the day, as maintenance work and temporary flood-defence restrictions are possible.

Cut End is principally a mixed estuary mark. Flounder are a notable target, while the tidal system can also produce seasonally variable sea fish moving in and out of The Wash.

• Flounder are a realistic year-round prospect, with worm baits and smaller, well-presented offerings often accounting for fish.
• Whiting, dabs and occasional codling may feature through the colder months when suitable coloured water pushes into the system.
• School bass, eel and mullet can be present in the warmer part of the year; treat bass and mullet with particular care and release undersized or unwanted fish promptly.
• Other catches can include small flatfish, gobies and estuary oddities, especially when fishing close to channel margins.
• Species presence varies markedly with salinity, river flow, weather and the state of the tide, so it is not a dependable venue for every species on every visit.

Use tackle suited to holding bottom in a moving tidal channel, while keeping rigs simple enough to fish cleanly over silt, shell and debris. Casting hard is not always the answer: a bait placed on the near edge of a run can outfish one sent into the main flow.

• A beachcaster or robust all-round rod with a reel carrying abrasion-resistant main line is sensible; use sufficient lead to hold safely without repeatedly dragging through the channel.
• A single-hook rig, clipped pulley-style rig or short two-hook flapper can work, depending on weed, tide strength and the target species.
• Use lugworm, ragworm, fresh peeler crab when available, squid strips or fish baits according to season; smaller worm baits are often useful for flounder and whiting.
• Keep hook lengths reasonably short in stronger flow and use robust hooks, as tidal debris and small crabs can quickly ruin a bait.
• Fish more than one line only if space, current and neighbouring anglers allow it; at this sort of mark, a single attentively fished rod is often safer and more effective.

Tidal timing is central at Cut End. The lower Haven and adjacent estuary can gain depth, current and fish movement rapidly, while exposed mud and shallow creek edges may make the same area unfishable around low water.

• A building flood tide commonly gives the best chance of bringing fish within reach, although the most effective stage varies between individual bank sections and channels.
• Neap or moderate tides are often easier to manage; larger springs can create powerful flow, rapid flooding and difficult ground conditions.
• Coloured water after suitable weather or river flow can improve confidence for species such as flounder, whiting and codling, but excessive freshwater can reduce salinity and alter the fishing.
• Avoid trying to recover lost tackle or move onto newly exposed mud on the ebb: channels can cut off areas surprisingly quickly.
• Check a current local tide prediction for the relevant Wash/Boston area and allow a substantial margin before and after the planned fishing period.

This is not a forgiving mark for anyone who is unfamiliar with tidal mud, steep defended banks or working navigation. The key safety rule is to fish from firm, lawful ground and leave well before the tide can compromise the route back.

• Never walk on mudflats, attempt to cross creeks, or rely on a route that the tide may cover; soft estuarine mud can trap an angler very quickly.
• Watch the water continuously, especially on spring tides, and fish with a companion where possible.
• Bank edges, drainage channels, wet grass and rock protection can be slippery; wear stable footwear and carry a headtorch if fishing towards dusk.
• Do not cast across, obstruct or enter a navigable channel, and give commercial, maintenance and safety vessels plenty of room.
• Accessibility is limited: uneven ground, variable parking, steps or slopes, and the absence of formal platforms make it unsuitable for many mobility-impaired anglers.

Cut End should be treated as a self-sufficient session rather than a venue with beach-style amenities. Facilities close to the water are limited or may be absent altogether.

• Take drinking water, food, a fully charged phone, lights, spare batteries and a basic first-aid kit.
• There may be no toilets, tackle shop, sheltered seating or rubbish provision at the fishing area.
• Buy bait, fuel and other supplies before arriving rather than expecting services at the mark.
• Take all litter, discarded line and bait packaging home; estuary banks are important for wildlife as well as flood defence.

The most useful local knowledge at Cut End is not a secret casting distance but identifying a safe, firm section of bank and understanding where the flow runs on that tide. Arrive in daylight on a first visit so that the ground and exit route can be assessed properly.

• Look for defined current lines, channel bends, creek mouths and seams where clearer and coloured water meet, but fish only from secure ground.
• Start with a bait close to the near channel edge before committing to long casts; feeding fish often patrol surprisingly close in.
• Bring spare leads, hooks and traces, as snags, shell and tidal debris are part of estuary fishing.
• Keep bait fresh and change it regularly, particularly when crabs are active in warm weather.
• Speak to local anglers respectfully and follow any current access advice; conditions and permitted entry points can change.

There is no clear basis for saying that all fishing at the area known as Cut End is officially prohibited, but this does not create a right to fish every bank, track or waterside structure there. Access, navigation and conservation rules can apply differently to particular sections.

• Fish only from land where public access or the landowner's permission is clear, and obey all posted signs, gates, temporary notices and requests from authorised staff.
• The lower tidal water is normally approached as sea fishing, but anglers moving upstream into freshwater or non-tidal water should check Environment Agency rod-licence requirements and the controlling fishing rights before doing so.
• Observe current national rules for protected species and minimum landing sizes, and check the latest official guidance for bass and any other regulated sea fish before retaining a catch.
• Do not interfere with flood-defence structures, drainage outfalls, locks, moorings or navigation infrastructure; local harbour, navigation or port directions may restrict where casting and access are appropriate.
• If signage, landowner instructions or operational activity indicate no access or no fishing at the intended spot, use another mark.
