Shoebury Common Beach

Shoebury Common Beach is a broad, open Thames-estuary beach at Shoeburyness, on the eastern side of Southend-on-Sea. It is a useful, accessible shore mark rather than a deep-water venue: success is usually tied to the right tide, a moving sea and realistic expectations of the shallow ground.

• The beach is principally sand and mud-sand, with groynes and occasional harder or rougher patches providing features worth locating at low water.
• It can produce enjoyable mixed-bag fishing, particularly in autumn and winter, but it is not generally a cast-anywhere, fish-every-tide mark.

The mark runs along the Shoebury Common seafront beside Marine Parade, with a promenade behind the beach and straightforward approach from Shoeburyness and the wider Southend area. Choose a section away from the busiest bathing areas and give other beach users plenty of room.

• Flounder are a traditional target over the cooler part of the year, especially where a shallow gully, firmer sand or slightly coloured water can be found.
• Whiting are a realistic autumn and winter possibility, with smaller fish often most numerous; better fish are never guaranteed from this shallow shoreline.

Shoebury Common is comparatively convenient by sea-angling standards, but the extensive tidal flat deserves respect. The main hazards are a rapidly advancing tide, slippery groynes, soft ground, wind exposure and the usual risks of fishing near other promenade and beach users.

• Check tide times before setting up, identify a clear route back to the promenade, and move back early rather than waiting for the water to reach your position.
• Avoid walking far across unfamiliar mud-sand, especially after dark or when alone; soft patches and channels can be difficult to see.
• Do not climb, wade beside or cast close to groynes in rough conditions, as algae, wet timber and submerged structure can be hazardous.
