Burnham Overy Beach

Burnham Overy Beach is a remote, open North Norfolk surf mark reached from Burnham Overy Staithe, valued more for its clean water, tidal gullies and summer bass potential than for easy, all-weather convenience.

• It is a mobile-shingle-and-sand coastline rather than a fixed harbour wall or promenade mark, so the productive water can move considerably after weather and spring tides.
• It suits anglers prepared to travel light and walk, with the best sessions often tied to a favourable tide, a little colour in the sea and a safe route back.
• It can produce pleasant mixed sea fishing, but it is not a place to expect constant bites or guaranteed large catches.

The beach lies beyond Burnham Overy Staithe and the dunes, with access normally involving a substantial walk over coastal paths, sand and shingle. Treat it as a remote mark: choose a safe route before carrying a large amount of kit.

• The usual approach is from the Burnham Overy Staithe area, following the signed public routes towards the dunes and beach; use only established paths and access points.
• Parts of the surrounding saltmarsh, creek system and beach approaches are tidal, and the most direct-looking route is not always the safe route.
• A trolley can be useful on firm ground but can be a nuisance in soft sand, shingle and dune paths; compact tackle, a rod holdall and a rucksack are often easier.
• Do not rely on being able to drive close to the fishing area, and allow ample time for the return walk after dark.
• Check current parking arrangements, path diversions and any estate or reserve notices before setting out.

The mark is principally a mixed surf and shoreline venue, with species varying sharply with season, sea state and the location of the deeper water. Summer and early autumn generally offer the broadest opportunities.

• Bass are a principal target when there is a little surf or coloured water, especially around gullies, wave-swept edges and moving water.
• Flounder, dab and other flatfish can feature over suitable sandier ground, particularly in the cooler part of the year.
• Whiting are possible in autumn and winter, while codling can occur in the right conditions but should be regarded as a bonus rather than a certainty.
• Mackerel may come within casting range in settled summer weather, and mullet can be encountered around clearer inshore water and creek-influenced areas.
• Lesser-spotted dogfish, eels and occasional rays may be possible in warmer months, depending on the ground and prevailing local conditions.

A straightforward surf-fishing approach is usually most effective, but mobility matters: look for the nearest accessible deeper gutter rather than casting blindly as far as possible. Arrive in daylight when practical so that you can read the beach and identify safe exits.

• For bass, use fresh or well-presented crab, lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab where legally and responsibly obtained, or a fish bait on a running ledger or clipped-down rig.
• A two-hook flapper or clipped-down trace with worm, squid-worm cocktails or small strips of fish is a useful general method for whiting, dabs and other mixed species.
• Keep terminal tackle simple and carry a range of grip leads, as the combination of surf, current and shallow water can make a fixed lead size unsuitable.
• Fish baits into identified gullies, seams of coloured water and the edges of banks; a shorter, accurate cast into a near gutter can outfish a long cast over it.
• Lures can be worthwhile for bass in daylight or low light when the water is not excessively coloured, but use them only where you can safely wade-free cast from firm ground.

Tide and weather dictate both fishing quality and the practical safety of this mark. A rising tide commonly brings fish closer over the shallows, but local creeks and low-lying access ground can make the return journey more difficult as water rises.

• Plan around the published tide times for the area and leave a generous margin; do not wait for water to cut off your route.
• The last part of the flood and the first part of the ebb are often sensible periods to try, although the best window can vary with the position of the gutters.
• A moderate onshore or cross-onshore breeze that puts a little colour into the sea can favour bait fishing for bass and winter species.
• In very calm, clear conditions, fishing can be quieter by day; dawn, dusk and darkness may then be more productive, provided access can be managed safely.
• Strong easterly or northerly weather can make the open beach hazardous and unpleasant, with heavy surf, wind-driven spray and rapidly changing beach conditions.

This is not an easy-access sea-fishing venue, and the combination of distance, soft ground, darkness and tide requires proper planning. Fish with a companion where possible and tell somebody your intended route and return time.

• Check tide tables, weather forecasts and local access notices before leaving the vehicle; mobile signal and visibility should not be assumed to be reliable everywhere.
• Avoid walking across saltmarsh or creek channels unless you know the route and tidal state well; mud can be deep, channels can fill quickly and water can cut off land.
• Wear supportive footwear suitable for uneven shingle, sand and wet ground, and take warm and waterproof layers even in summer.
• Keep clear of soft dune faces, unstable banks and wave-washed margins, particularly at night or in rough conditions.
• The long walk and uneven terrain make the mark unsuitable for many anglers with limited mobility; there are no assured hard-standing platforms or close beach-side facilities.
• Carry a headtorch, fully charged phone, first-aid basics, drinking water and enough light to make the return journey safely.
• It is a long walk out from the staithe and the creek route can be cut off by the tide; check times before you go.

Facilities are limited at the beach itself, which is part of its appeal but also its main logistical drawback. Organise food, water, tackle and lighting before walking out.

• Parking and any public amenities are generally associated with Burnham Overy Staithe or the village rather than the fishing beach; availability and charging arrangements can change.
• There are no dependable shelters, tackle shops, rubbish bins, running water or toilets on the beach approach itself.
• Take all litter, discarded line, bait packaging and fish waste home; this is particularly important in a sensitive coastal landscape.
• Buy bait, food and other supplies before arrival, as it is not sensible to expect late-opening services close to this remote mark.

The most useful local skill at Burnham Overy is reading the water and keeping your plan flexible. The beach can look uniformly shallow from a distance, but small gullies, darker strips and changes in breaking waves often reveal the fish-holding features.

• Visit in daylight first if possible, noting the firmest walking line, the position of tidal channels and landmarks that will still be visible on the return.
• Travel light enough to move if the first chosen area proves featureless; a short walk along the beach can reveal markedly better water.
• Use fresh bait and do not overcast automatically: fish often patrol the first accessible gutter on a flooding tide.
• Keep catches modest and release unwanted fish carefully, especially in warm weather when fish may be stressed in shallow water.
• Be considerate of walkers, dog owners, wildlife watchers and other beach users, keeping rods and line clear of public routes.

Fishing is not known to be universally prohibited at Burnham Overy Beach, but the surrounding coast includes sensitive habitats and management rules can apply to paths, dunes, saltmarsh and parking areas. Check current official signage, the relevant land manager or reserve information before fishing, particularly if planning a night session or using a less obvious access route.

• Stay on permitted public routes and respect any temporary closures, fenced nesting areas, seasonal wildlife protection notices and requests to avoid dune or saltmarsh habitats.
• Do not assume that access rights, parking permissions, dog controls, camping rules or night-time use are the same across the beach, dunes and staithe.
• Follow current national rules for minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and any recreational restrictions affecting species such as bass; these rules can change, so consult official fisheries guidance rather than relying on old reports.
• Do not remove bait, shellfish, natural materials or wildlife from protected areas unless you have confirmed that it is lawful and permitted.
