Holkham Beach

6.3· Beach · Norfolk

Holkham Beach is a vast, shallow sandy shore backed by dunes and saltmarsh, best reached from the Lady Anne’s Drive parking area before a walk across the sands. Fishing is governed by the tide: target the deeper runnels, gutters and any scoured channels around the flood and into high water, with long casts often useful but not always essential when fish move close in.

Why this rating?

  • Manageable wave movement: fishable with moderate shelter.
  • Gentle 9mph SW breeze puts a little life on the water without heavy drift.
  • High water at 03:15 and 16:17 — the last of the flood and first of the ebb are usually the prime spells.
  • Low rain risk (17%) — should stay comfortable all session.
  • Bite rating is strong today — fish the peak windows with confidence.

Holkham is a tide-led, feature-finding beach rather than a fixed-distance casting venue. Your best return is likely to come from locating a deeper gutter, runnel or scoured channel, then fishing the later flood through high water and into the first ebb. A bait placed accurately in coloured, moving water can outfish a maximum cast over featureless shallows.

  • Find the gutter that turns Holkham from a shallow cast-fest into a feeding lane.
  • Time the later flood and first ebb, when the water comes to you.
  • Know when a close-in bait will beat a long cast over empty sand.
  • Match the rig to the target: light multi-hook flatfish gear or stronger channel baits for rays and bass.
