Burnham Overy Staithe

Burnham Overy Staithe is a characterful, shallow tidal-harbour and creek mark on the north Norfolk coast, rather than a conventional open-beach venue. It can produce enjoyable light-tackle fishing for estuary species, but its moving water, soft mud and busy boating activity reward a careful, mobile approach.

• The most practical fishing is usually from legitimate public hard-standing, quay-side or sea-wall positions where anglers are not obstructing boats, moorings, launching or residents.
• It is principally a summer and autumn light-tackle venue; anglers looking for sustained surf fishing or big winter cod fishing are generally better served by more exposed nearby beaches.
• The character of the mark changes markedly with the tide, and the outer harbour/channel can fish very differently from the sheltered water around the Staithe.

The Staithe sits beside Burnham Overy Harbour, with tidal channels running out across the marshes towards the sea. Access is straightforward only where there is public highway, a designated path or clearly public harbour frontage; much of the attractive surrounding marsh and bank is private land or managed conservation land.

• Treat the working harbour, slipways, boat berths and mooring lines as operational space, not as fishing platforms.
• Parking can be limited and the approach roads are narrow, particularly in the holiday season; park only in marked or clearly permitted places and do not block gateways, passing places or launching access.
• Reaching more exposed water can involve a substantial walk along public routes. Do not make shortcuts across saltmarsh, fields, dunes or private tracks.
• The channel layout, banks and access points can alter after weather and tidal movement, so inspect the ground in daylight before committing to an evening session.

The harbour's mix of saline water, mud, weed and small channels suits typical Norfolk estuary fish. Expectations should be modest but realistic: this is more often a place for finesse, observation and a mixed bag than for distance casting.

• School bass are a principal warm-water target, especially where a flooding tide carries small fish, crabs and shrimp through the channel.
• Grey mullet can show in calm, clear conditions, often around harbour water and creek edges; they are notoriously wary and may ignore otherwise perfect-looking bait.
• Flounder are a dependable possibility over soft or mixed ground, particularly as water cools, with eels also possible in the creek system.
• Small whiting and other seasonal visitors may enter on suitable tides, while the outer, more saline water can occasionally provide additional coastal species.
• Fish size and numbers vary greatly with season, freshwater influence and the amount of water in the creek. Do not assume that a species reported from the wider harbour will be present at every state of tide.

Light, tidy tackle is far more appropriate here than heavy beach gear. Fish close to the productive edges and channels first; a long cast is often unnecessary and can place tackle into boat traffic or snaggy harbour ground.

• For bass and flounder, use a light running leger or simple flowing trace with a small to medium hook and enough lead only to hold bottom without dragging.
• Ragworm, lugworm, small crab baits and peeled prawn are sensible all-round offerings; tailor bait size to the small, natural food items in the harbour.
• A float-fished worm, prawn or small strip bait can be effective around defined channel edges when the tide is moving, provided it can be presented without drifting through moorings.
• For mullet, use very light terminal tackle, a discreet float or free-lined presentation, and bread-based loose feed only where it will not create a nuisance around boats or wildlife.
• Keep rigs short and controllable, use a landing net where the quay wall is high, and retrieve before a boat needs the water. Do not cast across navigable channels or around occupied moorings.

Tide is the key to Burnham Overy Staithe. The water can be thin and lifeless at low tide, then quickly become fishable as a flooding tide covers the creek edges and brings fish through the harbour.

• The last part of the flood, high water and the first part of the ebb are often the most convenient periods, but the best window depends on the exact spot and whether fish are entering or leaving the creek.
• Current can accelerate sharply in narrow sections. Use the minimum lead that works, watch the line closely and avoid fishing where a dragged rig could foul a channel or mooring.
• Low tide exposes extensive soft mud; do not attempt to cross it, even if a channel or bank looks close.
• Calm to moderate conditions usually make the harbour easier to fish and safer to manage. Strong onshore winds, heavy rain, surge or an unusually high tide can make access and quay-side fishing uncomfortable or unsafe.
• Consult a current local tide table before travelling and allow for the fact that shallow harbour water may rise and fall differently in appearance from an open-coast prediction.

This is not a forgiving mark for anyone who is unfamiliar with tidal mud or active harbours. A hard surface may be available near the Staithe, but access to less sheltered water is uneven and can involve long walks, gates, rough paths and exposed conditions.

• Never step onto saltmarsh mud, attempt to wade unknown channels or rely on a retreat route that may be cut off by the tide.
• Keep well back from crumbling edges, deep water, moving boats and propeller wash; wear a buoyancy aid if fishing close to the water from a quay or slip area.
• Take a headtorch for late sessions, but first learn the route and exit in daylight. Mobile signal, weather and visibility can all be poor across the marshes.
• Children and less-mobile anglers should use only safe, clearly public hard-standing areas with close supervision; many of the more scenic banks are not suitable for accessible fishing.
• Carry out all line, hooks and litter. Discarded tackle is especially hazardous to wading birds, dogs and harbour users.

Burnham Overy Staithe is a small village harbour, not a purpose-built fishing complex. It is wise to arrive self-sufficient, particularly outside the main visitor season or for dawn and evening tides.

• Bring bait, drinking water, food, a first-aid kit and all essential tackle rather than expecting a tackle shop at the mark.
• Village hospitality may be available at some times, while a wider choice of shops and services is found in nearby settlements; check current opening arrangements before relying on them.
• Public parking, toilets and bins can be seasonal, restricted or subject to local arrangements. Follow the instructions displayed on site and take rubbish home if bins are unavailable.
• There is no reason to expect dedicated angler platforms, lighting, fish-cleaning facilities or guaranteed accessible toilets.

Success here usually comes from watching the water before casting. Look for mullet dimpling, baitfish flicking along a bank, birds working a push of water, or a clean tidal seam beside—but never through—a safe open section of channel.

• Travel light enough to move away from boat activity or to another legitimate public position as the tide changes.
• Fish quietly: heavy footsteps, loud conversation and repeatedly dropping leads can spook mullet and shallow-water bass in clear, calm conditions.
• Match hook and bait size to the venue. Small neat worm or prawn baits commonly outfish oversized beach baits in the sheltered harbour.
• Ask regular harbour users politely where anglers may stand without impeding access; local courtesy is important at a small working Staithe.
• If conditions are poor inside the harbour, do not force it. A safer, more open coastal mark may be the better choice, provided access is lawful and the tide permits.

No blanket prohibition on angling at the mark should be assumed, but this does not create a right to fish from every quay, bank, slipway or mooring area. Land ownership, harbour management instructions, conservation controls and temporary safety notices can all restrict where and how fishing is allowed.

• Obey all posted harbour, landowner, National Trust or conservation signage, including any instructions concerning access, dogs, parking, launching areas, bird-sensitive ground and fishing.
• Do not fish from private moorings, pontoons, boats, restricted slipways or land without the owner's permission, and always give navigation and harbour operations priority.
• Check current national and regional sea-fisheries rules before retaining any catch, including species-specific minimum sizes, bag limits, closed periods and rules affecting bass, eels and other regulated fish.
• Recreational sea angling in tidal water does not normally require an Environment Agency rod licence, but fishing beyond the tidal limit or for freshwater/migratory fish can be subject to different rules; confirm the status of the exact water you intend to fish.
• The surrounding coast and marshes are environmentally sensitive. Use public rights of way, avoid disturbing nesting or roosting birds, and check official local sources for any seasonal restrictions or temporary closures.
• This is a working harbour with limited parking; do not obstruct the quay or slipway.
