Cley Beach

Cley Beach is a classic north Norfolk shingle-bank shore mark, valued for its open-water fishing, big skies and the chance of seasonal mixed catches. It is not a guaranteed fish-every-cast venue: conditions, water colour and a willingness to move along the beach matter greatly here.

• Best thought of as a mobile beach-fishing mark rather than a single fixed peg.
• The steep shingle can give relatively quick access to depth, especially around a building sea or higher water.
• It is particularly worthwhile when there is a little colour and movement in the North Sea, provided conditions remain safe.
• The surrounding marshes and coastal landscape are exceptionally sensitive, so anglers should keep a low-impact approach.

The mark lies on the shingle shoreline at Cley-next-the-Sea, between the better-known coastal access points around Blakeney and Salthouse. Access is generally made from the village-side coastal road and designated parking or beach access points, followed by a walk over the shingle ridge.

• Do not obstruct the narrow road, gateways, tracks, passing places or emergency access; use signed parking only.
• The beach is long and exposed, so it is often worth walking away from busy access points to find clean, fishable water and room for a cast.
• The crest and seaward face of the bank are loose, tiring underfoot and difficult to cross with a heavily loaded barrow.
• Check the route before committing after dark, as the beach, ditches and marsh-side paths can be confusing in poor visibility.
• Local access arrangements can change because of erosion, flooding, conservation work or storm damage, so read notices on arrival.

Cley can produce the usual north Norfolk open-shore mix, with the best prospects changing sharply through the year and with sea state. Expect modest catches on many sessions, but good fish can appear when bait, weather and tide coincide.

• Winter and late-autumn possibilities include whiting, dabs, flounder, occasional codling and other cold-water visitors.
• Spring can bring mixed flatfish fishing, with dabs and flounder often the most realistic targets.
• Summer and early autumn may offer bass, smooth-hound, school rays in suitable conditions, eel, dogfish and occasional mackerel or garfish when clear water and baitfish are present.
• Mullet may be seen in calmer periods, but they are highly wary and are not a simple beach target.
• Species presence is variable: a report of a fish from another Norfolk beach is useful intelligence, not a promise that Cley will fish the same way.

A two-rod bait approach is the dependable starting point, with one rod fished close and the other used to search farther water. Match terminal tackle to the surf and shingle rather than automatically using the heaviest gear.

• Use a beachcaster capable of holding a bait in moving water, with a suitably sized fixed-spool or multiplier reel and strong shock-leader arrangement where casting demands it.
• Pulley, clipped-down or streamlined rigs are useful over the shingle; use enough grip lead to hold bottom, but avoid needlessly heavy tackle in calm water.
• Fishworm, lugworm, ragworm, squid, mackerel, crab and shellfish baits all have a place; fresh, well-presented bait is usually more important than elaborate rigs.
• For bass or smooth-hound, try larger, robust baits such as crab or fish-and-worm cocktails when the water has some colour.
• For flatfish and whiting, smaller hooks, worm-based baits and a short-to-medium cast can outfish a distant cast; start by covering different ranges.
• A light spinning outfit can be worthwhile for mackerel, garfish or bass in settled, clear summer water, but only where the sea is safe enough to work lures effectively.

Cley is strongly condition-led. A moderate sea with coloured water often improves confidence for bait fishing, while a flat, very clear sea can make daytime fishing slow apart from seasonal pelagic activity.

• Fish the flood and the first part of the ebb as a practical starting point, but vary the timing after local reports and watch where the sea is actually working.
• Higher water can make the shingle face more accessible to fish, yet it also reduces the available beach quickly; keep an exit route behind you.
• A northerly or north-easterly swell can colour the water and switch on the fishing, but it can also make the shore hazardous and unfishable.
• Calm, clear summer evenings and dawns can be better than bright midday periods for bass and surface-feeding fish.
• Avoid fishing directly into severe onshore surf, storm surge, lightning or fog; no species is worth being trapped by an advancing sea.

This is an exposed natural shingle beach rather than an easy promenade venue. The principal hazards are unstable footing, rapidly changing surf, cold wind and the speed at which the sea can claim the lower beach.

• Wear sturdy boots with good grip, warm windproof layers and a headtorch after dark; a flotation device is sensible when fishing close to energetic surf.
• Keep well clear of the waterline in rough weather and never turn your back on a larger set of waves.
• Tell someone where you are going, carry a charged phone, and check weather, tide and coastal flood information before leaving home.
• Take particular care with children, dogs and anyone unsteady on shingle; the slope can be punishing and wheelchair access onto the fishing beach is generally poor.
• Do not fish alone in marginal conditions, and be prepared to leave early if wind or swell rises.
• Pack out all line, hooks, bait packaging and litter, as discarded tackle is especially dangerous to birds and other wildlife.

Facilities are limited at the beach itself, so Cley works best for anglers who arrive self-sufficient. The village has visitor amenities, but availability and opening arrangements are seasonal and should not be assumed at night.

• Use designated public parking and follow any payment, closing-time or vehicle-height instructions displayed there.
• Bring drinking water, food, spare clothing, a first-aid kit and a rubbish bag.
• Toilets, shops and food options may be available in or around the village during some periods, but check locally before an evening or winter session.
• There is no expectation of sheltered fishing, tackle sales, lighting or a rescue presence on the beach.
• Keep vehicles and equipment away from access routes used by residents, farm traffic and emergency services.

Success at Cley usually comes from reading the beach rather than standing in the first convenient gap in the shingle. Arrive in daylight when possible and spend time looking for changes in the water before setting up.

• Look for darker water, small gutters, seams of foam, sheltered water beside a bar, or places where the surf appears to draw back; these features can concentrate food and fish.
• If the beach looks featureless and the first hour is quiet, move rather than repeatedly casting over the same ground.
• Carry a simple but secure setup: rod rest, bait table and tackle should be anchored or laid safely because wind can be severe on the exposed bank.
• Keep casts controlled and be alert for walkers, birdwatchers and other beach users behind you before every cast.
• Dawn, dusk and darkness can be productive, but the remoteness and difficult footing mean an early reconnaissance is far preferable to arriving for the first time at night.

Fishing should not be assumed unrestricted simply because the beach is open. Cley sits beside internationally important coastal habitats and nature-reserve land, so anglers must follow current signs, landowner instructions and national fisheries rules.

• This entry is not treated as a blanket fishing ban, but access or fishing may be restricted temporarily or in specific areas for conservation, safety, erosion or management reasons.
• Stay on public access routes where required and do not enter signed sanctuary areas, fenced habitat, dunes, marshes, roost sites or private land to gain a fishing position.
• Check current official notices from the relevant land manager, local authority and fisheries authorities before travelling, especially after storms or during bird-sensitive periods.
• Observe current rules on minimum sizes, retained species, protected species, catch limits and any local byelaws; release anything you cannot lawfully retain.
• Do not remove bait or collect shellfish from protected or restricted areas without confirming that it is permitted.
• Give wildlife a wide berth, retrieve all tackle, and avoid illuminating or disturbing roosting birds with powerful lights.
