Cley East Bank

Cley East Bank is a shingle-beach sea-fishing mark on the North Norfolk coast, approached around the Cley Marshes/Beach area rather than being a harbour or pier venue. It is best treated as a mobile, weather-dependent open-coast mark: it can produce well in the right sea, but exposed conditions and the long shingle walk are part of the bargain.

• The steep shingle and open North Sea frontage suit standard beachcasting tactics.
• It is principally a bait-fishing venue, with its better sessions often linked to coloured water, a moving sea and the colder months.
• Do not expect a permanently fixed fishing platform: storm action can alter the beach profile, gullies and casting distance from one visit to the next.

The mark is generally understood as the beach reached from the eastern-bank side of Cley Marshes, near Cley-next-the-Sea. Access is normally on foot from the village, beach parking areas or the reserve-side paths, using the designated routes over or around the shingle bank.

• Expect a walk over uneven, loose shingle; carrying a compact beach setup is far easier than transporting a full tournament-style amount of gear.
• Use marked paths, gates and access points, and do not climb fragile dune, bank or fence lines to shorten the route.
• Parking arrangements, footpath diversions and beach access can change, particularly after coastal works or storm damage, so check locally before travelling.
• The beach is remote after dark, with little shelter and no dependable lighting.

The usual targets are North Norfolk open-beach species, with the catch mix changing markedly with season, sea state and water temperature. Whiting and flatfish are realistic staples, while larger fish tend to be more dependent on a proper tide and suitable conditions.

• Whiting are a main autumn and winter target, often taking worm, squid and fish baits after dark.
• Dabs and other flatfish can provide sport in calmer spells, particularly on worm baits fished close to the seabed.
• Codling may appear in late autumn and winter when there is coloured water and enough movement; regard them as a worthwhile possibility rather than a guaranteed catch.
• Bass can show in warmer months, especially where a surf has formed over the shingle, and can take peeler crab, worm or a well-worked lure.
• Mackerel, garfish and occasional other summer pelagics may be available when the water is clear and baitfish are present.
• Rays, smooth-hounds and other less regular visitors are possible along this coast, but should not be the sole reason for choosing the mark.

A conventional beachcaster, sturdy tripod and abrasion-resistant main line are the sensible starting point on this shingle frontage. Match the rig to the target and conditions rather than automatically trying to cast as far as possible.

• For whiting, dabs and mixed fish, use a two-hook flapper, clipped-down rig or simple paternoster with lugworm, ragworm, squid strips or small fish-bait cocktails.
• For codling or larger fish, a pulley-type rig with a single larger bait can be useful, particularly where a rolling sea may move a fixed rig.
• Use enough grip lead to hold station; the required weight varies greatly with surf and tide, so carry a small range rather than relying on one pattern.
• Fish baits such as mackerel, herring or squid can be effective after dark, but fresh or well-kept worm often gives more consistent mixed catches.
• In summer, carry a spinning rod or light lure setup for mackerel, garfish and bass when baitfish are visible; only do this where the surf and shingle make landing fish safe.
• Keep rods high on a secure tripod and place it well above the advancing wash, as shingle can shift underfoot and a rising tide can quickly claim unattended gear.

This is a mark where sea state matters at least as much as the printed tide table. A moderate onshore sea that colours the water can improve bait fishing, while a large easterly or north-easterly blow can make the beach dangerous or simply unfishable.

• The flooding tide, high water and the first part of the ebb are often productive periods, especially for evening and night sessions.
• A modest surf and slightly coloured water are commonly favourable for whiting, codling and bass.
• Clear, settled summer water is better suited to mackerel, garfish and lure fishing, although flatfish can still feed in quieter areas.
• In a strong crosswind, cast control, line management and holding bottom become difficult; fish shorter if necessary rather than forcing unsafe long casts.
• Watch the beach for fresh gullies, scoured patches and changes in the shingle slope, but avoid standing at the waterline to investigate them in heavy surf.
• Check the forecast, tide times and any coastal-flood warnings before setting out, not just on arrival.

Cley East Bank is not an easy-access mark. Loose shingle, a steep beach profile, exposed weather and darkness make it more suitable for mobile anglers who are comfortable on rough coastal ground.

• Wear supportive footwear with good grip; smooth-soled footwear is a poor choice on shifting wet shingle.
• Never turn your back on the sea. Larger sets can run farther up the bank than the preceding waves, especially in an onshore blow.
• Avoid fishing close to the water in rough conditions, and leave early if the surf is increasing or the tide is removing your safe standing area.
• Take a headtorch, charged phone, warm waterproof layers and a means of recording an emergency location from your phone if required.
• Fish with a companion where possible, particularly at night or in winter, and tell someone your intended return time.
• The uneven shingle and potentially lengthy walk mean the mark is unlikely to be suitable for wheelchair users or anglers needing level, close-to-vehicle access.
• Do not use cliffs, unstable shingle faces or flood-defence structures as fishing platforms.

Facilities are mainly found back in and around Cley rather than on the fishing beach itself. Plan the session as self-sufficient, particularly if fishing into darkness.

• Parking, toilets, food and other services may be available in the village or at nearby visitor facilities, subject to their own opening times and restrictions.
• There is no reason to assume toilets, fresh water, shelter or tackle supplies will be available at the beach.
• Bring drinking water, bait, spare tackle, a rubbish bag and sufficient lighting.
• Keep vehicles only in permitted parking areas; do not drive onto the shingle, reserve tracks or restricted coastal ground.

Travel light, arrive in daylight if it is your first visit, and spend a few minutes reading the beach before setting up. At Cley, choosing a safe place to fish and timing the weather well are often more important than squeezing out an extra few yards of casting distance.

• A session spanning dusk and high water is a good general starting plan for whiting and other bait-feeding species.
• Start with smaller, fresh baits for a few bites, then scale up one rod if bigger fish are expected.
• Carry spare leads, hooks and rig bodies: rolling shingle and a lively sea can make tackle losses more likely.
• Keep catches modest and return unwanted fish carefully; the beach and surrounding marshes are valued wildlife habitat.
• Pack out all line, bait packaging and discarded tackle. Lost line is particularly hazardous to coastal birds and other wildlife.
• Speak to a local tackle shop shortly before the trip for current reports, beach access news and the most useful bait choice.

Fishing is not known to be universally prohibited on the sea beach at this mark, but Cley is bordered by important nature-reserve and coastal-protection land. The fact that the beach may be fishable does not give permission to roam, park or fish anywhere within the surrounding reserve.

• Follow all on-site signs, landowner instructions, seasonal notices and directions from reserve staff; these take precedence over general advice.
• Stay on public rights of way and designated access routes when crossing the marshes or shingle bank, and respect any areas closed for nesting birds, habitat management or flood-defence work.
• Do not assume that reserve car parks, tracks or paths permit overnight use, vehicle access or camping.
• Observe current national and local rules on minimum sizes, catch limits, protected species and the release of prohibited or restricted catches. Check official fisheries guidance before keeping fish.
• If signage appears to prohibit fishing at the specific access point or beach section you intend to use, choose another lawful location rather than relying on older reports.
