Cley East Bank

5.9· Beach · Norfolk

Cley East Bank is an open, steep shingle beach east of Cley-next-the-Sea, generally reached from the beach road or nearby parking before a walk over loose pebbles. It is a mobile, tide-led North Sea mark: fish the deeper water around a rising tide and after dark for whiting and cod in colder months, while summer can produce bass, flatfish, mackerel and occasional rays.

Cley East Bank is a tide-led, open North Sea shingle beach where sea state can matter more than the tide table. The most dependable general plan is a bait session spanning dusk, the flood and high water, concentrating on the deeper water, fresh gullies and scoured areas revealed by the current beach profile. A modest onshore sea and slightly coloured water can improve whiting, codling and bass fishing; an oversized easterly or north-easterly sea is a reason to stay away.

  • Fish the flood, high water and early ebb around Cley’s changing deep-water features.
  • Know when a modest coloured sea helps—and when an easterly blow ends the session.
  • Match two-hook mixed-fish tactics to whiting and dab, then scale up for codling or rays.
  • Use nearby marks only after checking their separate access, rules and conditions.
