Salthouse Beach

Salthouse Beach is a classic North Norfolk shingle-bank mark, valued for its open sea fishing, mobile summer species and winter codling/whiting potential. It is a natural, exposed venue rather than a sheltered promenade fishery, so conditions and water colour have a major bearing on results.

The beach lies on the North Norfolk coast at Salthouse, between the better-known Cley and Kelling stretches. Access is generally from the beach-side parking and footpaths near the village, followed by a short but physically demanding crossing of the shingle bank.

Salthouse can produce a useful range of East Anglian shore species, although catches are highly seasonal and no single species is guaranteed. The deeper water close to parts of the shingle bank is one reason it can be worth trying when a sea is running.

A simple two-rod beach setup covers most situations at Salthouse: one rod fishing bait on the seabed and, when conditions allow, another targeting more mobile fish. The shingle and changing seabed reward anglers who travel light, cast accurately and adjust their approach to the tide and sea state.

Salthouse is generally most productive when there is enough movement and colour in the water, rather than during long periods of clear, calm, settled weather. Tide timing varies with target species and the constantly changing beach profile, so treat broad rules as a starting point rather than a certainty.

This is an exposed shingle beach with no shelter from an onshore wind, and it can become hazardous surprisingly quickly in a North Sea swell. The steep, loose bank is hard work with tackle and makes the mark unsuitable for many anglers with limited mobility.

Facilities are limited at the beach itself, which is part of its appeal for anglers seeking a quieter, natural shoreline. Arrive prepared rather than expecting bait shops, tackle supplies or beach-side services immediately at hand.

The best-looking water is not always directly in front of the access point: spend a few minutes reading the beach before committing to a peg. On this type of coast, a little local observation of wind direction, coloured water and recent reports is often more valuable than casting extreme distance.

There is no clear general indication that sea angling from the open beach is prohibited, but anglers must follow any current signs, land-management instructions and access restrictions at the point they use. Salthouse sits beside sensitive coastal habitats, so responsible access and minimal disturbance are especially important.
