East Lane Beach is a quiet, open Suffolk Coast venue near Bawdsey, offering classic shallow-water beach fishing over a changing mixture of shingle, sand and gullies. It is best approached as a mobile, tide-led mark rather than a place with permanently fixed “hot spots”.

• The venue can produce a useful mixed-bag session, particularly when a little colour and movement are present in the sea.
• It is more suited to anglers happy to walk, read the beach at low water and fish into darkness than to those wanting a heavily developed promenade mark.

The mark usually fishes best when tide movement, water colour and a fishable sea combine, rather than on a single universally productive tide. Conditions change quickly on this exposed frontage, and the first part of an incoming tide is often worth close attention where low-water channels are present.

• Arrive around low water when practical to identify gullies, sandbars, firmer walking routes and any weed lines, then fish the flooding water into those features.
• A moderate onshore breeze and a lightly coloured sea can improve bass, whiting and codling prospects, provided casting and weed remain manageable.

• Fish the transitions: the edge where shingle meets sand, the lip of a gutter, a seam of coloured water or the boundary of a surf line.
• Keep one rod close and one farther out when legal and practical, then alter both once bites reveal the feeding distance.
• Carry enough leads, hooks and rigs for abrasion from shingle and for weed-clogged or storm-shifted ground.
• Use fresh local worm baits where possible, keep bait cool, and scale hook size and bait size down if small fish are stripping offerings.
• Be considerate to walkers, dog owners, swimmers and other anglers; keep casting areas clear and retrieve lines when people enter the water.
• Take all discarded line and bait home, as loose line is a serious hazard to wildlife along this coast.
