Gunton Beach

Gunton Beach is a classic open Suffolk shore mark on the north side of Lowestoft, combining shingle at the top of the beach with firmer sand and shallow gullies lower down. It is a useful, straightforward venue for mobile beach anglers, particularly in autumn and winter, although it can be very exposed to an easterly sea.

The mark is reached from the Gunton clifftop and seafront area north of central Lowestoft, with several public approaches leading down towards the beach. Exact access points, parking arrangements and the condition of steps or paths can change, so it is worth checking on arrival rather than relying on an old report.

Gunton is primarily a mixed-bag East Coast beach, with the better target species changing sharply with season, sea state and water temperature. It is not generally a deep-water distance-casting venue, so fishing the right feature and tide often matters more than casting as far as possible.

• Whiting are a principal autumn and winter target, often appearing after dark and in coloured water.
• Dabs, flounder and occasional plaice can be encountered over the cleaner sandy ground, especially when the sea is settled.
• Bass may show in warmer months and during autumn, particularly around surf, coloured water and the ends of groynes; observe current national bass rules.
• Sole can be possible on calm, mild summer evenings over clean sand, with smaller baits often outperforming bulky offerings.
• Codling are an occasional winter prospect when there is a proper coloured sea and enough movement, but should not be treated as a certainty.
• Small rays, dogfish, eels and other opportunistic species can turn up, depending on season and local conditions.
• Mackerel may be within range during summer when clear water pushes close in, though catches are very tide- and weather-dependent.

A two-rod beach setup is practical here: one bait placed in the nearer trough or behind a bank, and a second cast used to search a different line. Carrying a few rigs and being prepared to move away from weed or unproductive water is more effective than remaining fixed in one swim all session.

• Use clipped-down pulley, pennel or simple flapping rigs with enough lead to hold in the prevailing tide and surf.
• For whiting, dabs and mixed winter fishing, lugworm, ragworm, squid strips, mackerel strip and worm-and-squid cocktails are dependable choices.
• For bass, present fresh worm, peeler crab when seasonally available, or a larger natural bait in the surf line; keep tackle robust enough for rough ground around groynes.
• For sole and flatter fish on quieter summer nights, try smaller hooks, light worm baits and short, neat rigs fished close rather than simply casting to the horizon.
• Fish parallel to, or just clear of, the groynes rather than deliberately casting across them, as tackle losses can be frequent.
• A tripod keeps reels above blowing sand and splash, while a headtorch, spare batteries and a landing cloth are sensible for night sessions.

The beach usually fishes best with some water movement and a little colour, but the ideal state depends on the quarry. A huge easterly swell can make it unfishable and dangerous, while very clear, flat water can make daytime fishing slow.

• The flooding tide commonly brings fish closer over the shallower sand; start before the tide reaches the beach and fish into the early ebb where safe access remains.
• Mid-tide periods can reveal gullies, runnels and changes in sand level; a daylight walk at low water is valuable for identifying these features.
• Autumn and winter sessions after a moderate blow can favour whiting, codling chances and other rough-weather species.
• Settled late spring and summer evenings are the more appropriate time for sole, bass and occasional mackerel.
• A moderate onshore swell may improve the fishing, but strong easterly or north-easterly conditions create heavy surf, weed and difficult casting.
• Expect conditions to alter after storms: banks shift, gullies fill in and a previously productive gap between groynes can change completely.

Gunton Beach is an open, tide-affected shore, and the combination of steep shingle, groynes, darkness and surf deserves proper care. It is usually more suitable for able-bodied anglers carrying manageable gear than for anyone needing level, step-free access to the waterline.

• Check tide times before setting up and leave yourself a clear route back, especially if fishing a low-water feature or an isolated stretch of sand.
• Do not fish close to the base of soft or unstable cliffs, and obey any warning signs, fenced sections or temporary closure notices.
• Groynes can be slippery with weed and algae; avoid climbing over them in the dark or in lively surf.
• Wear suitable boots or waders for loose shingle and wet sand, but do not wade into surf or unfamiliar channels.
• In a strong onshore wind, keep well back from the water, secure rods and shelter, and abandon the session if waves are reaching your position.
• Night anglers should fish with a charged phone, headtorch, warm waterproof clothing and ideally a companion; tell someone where you are going.

Gunton has the advantages of being close to Lowestoft, where food, fuel, tackle supplies and other services are available, but facilities immediately beside an individual fishing gap should not be assumed. Treat it as a beach session and arrive self-sufficient.

• Parking may be available in nearby clifftop roads or public parking areas, but restrictions, charges and seasonal arrangements can apply.
• Public toilets, cafés and shops are more likely around the wider seafront and town than directly at the fishing position; opening times can be seasonal.
• Bring drinking water, food, spare bait bags and a rubbish bag, as there may be no bin close to the spot you choose.
• Keep access paths, entrances and any seafront parking clear for residents, walkers and emergency vehicles.

The most productive part of Gunton is often not a named peg but the freshest-looking water in front of you. Spend a few minutes reading the beach before assembling all the gear, and be willing to relocate if the tide, weed or angler pressure makes a section poor.

• Look for darker water, a defined gutter, a dip in the shingle ridge, or a calmer channel beside a breaking bank; these are often better than featureless water.
• Avoid setting up immediately beside other anglers unless space is genuinely limited, as side winds and cross-casting can quickly cause tangles.
• Fresh local worm baits are usually a strong starting point; keep them cool and change washed-out baits regularly in coloured water.
• In weed-prone conditions, use streamlined baits and check regularly rather than leaving a bait to fish while it is wrapped in debris.
• If targeting whiting after dark, keep a consistent baiting routine and do not overlook the nearer water, where feeding fish may be surprisingly close.
• Take all line, bait packaging and discarded tackle home. The beach is heavily used by walkers and wildlife, so tidy fishing helps protect access.

There is no clear general indication that sea angling is universally prohibited along Gunton Beach, but access can be affected by local works, safety closures, events, private frontage or temporary signage. The absence of a general ban does not override any notice displayed at the access point or on the beach.

• Read all current East Suffolk Council, landowner and beach signage before fishing, particularly around restricted paths, cliff works and managed seafront areas.
• Follow current national rules for sea fish species, including any minimum conservation reference sizes, bag limits, closed periods and special bass restrictions; these rules can change, so check official fisheries guidance before travelling.
• Do not collect bait, dig, drive, light fires or use drones where local notices, conservation controls or landowner rules prohibit it.
• Be considerate of swimmers, dog walkers, water users and nesting or protected wildlife; move or stop fishing if your casting area is no longer safe.
• If in doubt about a particular access, parking place or beach section, choose another public access point or seek confirmation from the relevant council or land manager.
