• Feathering for mackerel is best treated as an occasional daylight option in clear water; use a light enough trace to cast safely and avoid snagging people on the promenade or beach.

The beach is fishable across a range of tides, but the useful water and safe standing room can change quickly. A building flood tide, especially into and around high water, is often a strong starting point because fish can move over the inner bars and into the beach troughs.

• Fish the last part of the flood and early ebb when a gully is accessible and the tide is pushing food along the shore.
• Low water is valuable for reconnaissance, but some sections can become shallow and less inviting until the tide returns.

• Take all line, bait packaging and discarded tackle home; lost line around groynes and sea defences is a serious hazard to wildlife and other beach users.

The best approach at North Denes is to fish it as a changing piece of shoreline rather than rely on a single fixed casting spot. A short pre-session walk, looking for darker water and a clean route for a bait, can be more valuable than an extra fifty yards of casting distance.

• Arrive in daylight for a first visit and identify a safe exit before committing to an evening flood tide.
• Try one bait close to the beach trough and another at medium range before deciding that the fish are only at distance.
• Fresh worm and crab baits are often more persuasive than heavily scented frozen offerings, particularly for bass and flatfish.
• In coloured winter water, concentrate on a visible gutter, the edge of a breaking bank or a seam where the surf is carrying food alongshore.
