Ness Point

Ness Point, at the north end of Lowestoft’s seafront, is an exposed North Sea shore mark with a convenient promenade-based approach and a reputation for seasonal mixed fishing. It is better treated as a mobile, condition-led venue than a guaranteed high-water hot spot: water colour, wind direction and tide state matter greatly.

• The mark fishes into open sea rather than a sheltered estuary, so it can be productive after a modest sea has stirred the bottom.
• It is principally a beach, groyne and promenade-edge area; exact fishable space can change with beach levels, storm damage and public use.
• It suits anglers who can adapt tackle and bait to the season, rather than relying on one long-range method.
• Early morning, dusk and night generally offer the best chance of quality fish and avoid the busiest periods on the seafront.

Ness Point is on Lowestoft’s seafront, close to the town centre and easily reached on foot from the promenade and nearby public streets. The immediate shoreline is highly visible and accessible, but anglers should choose a position that does not obstruct walkers, cyclists or seafront users.

• Use the public promenade and established beach access points; do not climb sea defences, fenced structures or private property to gain a cast.
• Parking is available in the wider Lowestoft seafront area, though restrictions, charges and availability vary; check the signs at the car park or on-street bay used.
• A trolley is useful for beach fishing, but steps, ramps, soft shingle and changing beach profiles can make the final approach awkward.
• The open aspect means there is little shelter from an easterly or north-easterly wind.

Ness Point can produce a typical Suffolk open-coast mix, with the strongest opportunities changing between warm-water and colder-water seasons. Flatfish and smaller round fish are realistic daytime targets, while darkness and coloured water can bring better chances of larger predators and winter visitors.

• Spring and summer: bass, flounder, dab, plaice, eel and the occasional smooth-hound may be encountered, with mackerel possible when shoals are close enough and conditions permit.
• Autumn: bass can remain a major draw, while whiting, dabs and other mixed ground fish become increasingly likely as water temperatures fall.
• Winter: whiting, dabs, flounder, codling on the right weather pattern, and occasional rays are the main realistic targets.
• All year: small pout, pin whiting and other nuisance fish may be numerous, particularly after dark; return undersize and unwanted fish carefully.

A straightforward beach setup covers most situations at Ness Point, although lighter gear can be enjoyable in calm weather when targeting flatfish. Distance can help at times, but presenting fresh bait on the most productive line is usually more important than casting as far as possible.

• For general fishing, use a beachcaster or suitable surf rod with a robust fixed-spool or multiplier reel, a shockleader where appropriate, and a simple clipped or pulley-style rig for longer casts.
• Two-hook flapper or loop rigs with smaller hooks are effective for dabs, flounder and whiting; use longer, finer snoods in clearer and calmer conditions.
• For bass, fish a larger bait such as peeler crab, lugworm, ragworm, squid-and-worm cocktail or fish bait on a stronger single-hook rig; match tackle to the possibility of a ray or decent bass.
• In calm summer weather, a light spinning rod can be worth carrying for mackerel or bass, but avoid casting metal lures near swimmers, paddleboarders and crowded areas.
• Fresh lugworm, ragworm, peeler crab and squid are useful core baits. Black lug and fish strips can be particularly useful for whiting and codling in colder, coloured water.
• Bring enough lead to cope with tide and wind. A breakout grip lead may be needed when lateral movement is pulling a plain lead off line.

Ness Point usually responds best when there is enough movement and colour to bring fish within casting range without making the shore unsafe or unfishable. A moderate sea following onshore or north-easterly weather can be excellent, but the same conditions can quickly become hazardous.

• The flood tide, high-water period and first part of the ebb are sensible starting points, especially for bass, whiting and codling, though the best window varies with beach shape and season.
• Flatfish can feed over a longer spell in settled conditions, particularly where a trough or softer patch of ground lies within range.
• A little coloured water often improves daytime confidence for bass and winter fish; very clear, flat water can favour lighter lines, smaller baits and evening sessions.
• Strong easterly, north-easterly or gale-force conditions can create heavy surf and make casting, holding bottom and safe access difficult. Do not fish simply because the sea looks promising.
• Watch how the tide covers the lower beach and any access route before committing to a distant position; leave yourself a dry, clear retreat route.

The promenade gives Ness Point a more straightforward approach than many Suffolk beach marks, but it remains an exposed sea venue where waves, spray, wind and tide must be taken seriously. It is not a suitable place to take risks around the waterline or on wet coastal structures.

• Keep well back from the edge in rough conditions: unexpected larger waves can overtop lower levels and sweep tackle or people off their feet.
• Do not stand on slippery groynes, attempt to cast from unstable structures, or wade in surf to gain extra distance.
• Tell someone where you are fishing, carry a charged phone and a headtorch for darkness, and check the weather, sea state and tide before travelling.
• The surfaced promenade can assist anglers with limited mobility, but practical fishing access depends on the current beach level, ramp condition, space behind the railings and whether a safe casting position is available.
• Be particularly considerate at night: use headtorches sensibly, keep rods and tripods out of walking lines, and avoid leaving hooks, line or bait on the promenade.

This is one of the more convenient Suffolk shore marks for supplies and amenities because Lowestoft town and seafront facilities are close by. Facilities should not be assumed to be open outside daytime or peak-season periods.

• Shops, food outlets and public amenities may be available in the surrounding seafront and town-centre area, depending on time of day and season.
• Tackle, bait and refreshments are best obtained before setting up, especially for an evening or winter session when nearby businesses may be closed.
• Use designated bins where provided, but take discarded line, bait packaging, broken rigs and other fishing litter home if bins are full.
• There is no reason to leave fish waste on the promenade or beach; it attracts pests and damages relations with other users.

The most productive area can shift after storms, so spend a few minutes reading the water before putting rods out. A visible gutter, darker channel, patch of disturbed water or line of surf often offers more than featureless, clean-looking sea.

• Arrive in daylight when possible and identify safe access, the tide line and any signs of channels or changing beach contours before a night session.
• Carry a selection of rigs rather than committing to one: a small-hook flatfish/whiting rig and a stronger single-hook bait rig cover most likely scenarios.
• In busy summer periods, fish outside the main beach-use hours and give a very wide berth to swimmers, dogs, kayaks and other water users.
• Keep casts controlled and low where possible. The promenade can be busy behind you, and an uncontrolled overhead cast is unacceptable.
• If bites are only small fish, shorten or lengthen the snoods, reduce bait size, or move a short distance to locate cleaner ground or a feeding channel.

No blanket fishing ban is assumed for Ness Point, but local restrictions can apply to particular sections of promenade, beach, sea-defence works or public events. Anglers should treat on-site signs, temporary barriers and instructions from authorised staff as controlling.

• Check current council notices and all signage at the access point for any seasonal beach-management rules, exclusion zones, works or restrictions on fishing from structures.
• Follow current national rules for sea fish, including any retained-fish size, bag, seasonal, licensing or catch-and-release requirements that apply to species such as bass; these rules can change, so verify them through official fisheries sources before fishing.
• Do not fish in a way that endangers or obstructs the public, and do not cast where swimmers or other water users could enter the casting area.
• Return protected, prohibited or unwanted fish with care, avoid removing large breeding fish where possible, and take all line, hooks and litter away.
• If a section is signed as private, closed, under construction or restricted for harbour/coastal operations, choose another public stretch rather than assuming shore access is permitted.
